A quick note on this score follower:
Due to the nature of the notation, it is not always possible for the visuals to line up with every aspect of the performance. I have done my best to preserve as much of the relevant information as possible by following the most active instrument in the score, ensuring that at some point, all of the content from the score is displayed on screen.
An extra special thanks to the performers:
Bryanna Beasley, flute
Manzar Elahi, bassoon
Ethan Sedelmeier, glockenspiel
Eric Amerine, vibraphone
Miguel Guzman, violin

I've been experimenting with audio processing lately, and this "remix" of Philip Glass' iconic work "Music in Twelve Parts" (Part VIII specifically) is a result of that. All I've done is apply some really straightforward transformations and effects- simple enough, in fact, that I'm going to list them here for anybody who's interested in this sort of thing: FX: On the original track: - "Twelve P...
Steve Reich- Variations for Winds, Strings, and Keyboards (Transcription for Synth Patches)
มุมมอง 10K10 ปีที่แล้ว
I'm very proud of this transcription, which took about 3 months of working on it in between school work. I think I've managed to get the balance pretty close to the way Steve Reich originally intended it, though I've made some rare personal choices as to which parts I find more interesting and are brought to the foreground. Instrumentation: 6 Square patches (3 flute panned left, 3 oboe panned r...
Synthetic Einstein on the Beach: Act 4, Scene 3- Spaceship
มุมมอง 2.3K10 ปีที่แล้ว
A spaceship or something. Do Re Mi Fa Sol. - This is a part of an ongoing project to transcribe the entirety of the Philip Glass opera, Einstein on the Beach. I'm trying to avoid recording/transcribing the text-based movements as long as possible due to technical reasons. This will be solved soon. Again, the artwork is original. Enjoy! *A note on this movement: The solo violin part (which will ...
Synthetic Einstein on the Beach: Act 1, Scene 1- Train
มุมมอง 2.2K11 ปีที่แล้ว
This rendition is part of a project in which I am transcribing the whole of Einstein on the Beach by Philip Glass. I will be transcribing all of the music onto synthetic instrument patches as well as performing the speaking parts. I started with The first scene of the first act because it was the easiest to do, being one of the few scenes without additional text that would need to be recorded a...

Steve Reich- Eight Lines (Transcription for Synth Patches)
มุมมอง 9K11 ปีที่แล้ว
I've had this sitting around for a while, I'd just never polished it and put it up. Instrumentation: 2 Square oscillators(flute, piccolo) 2 Sawtooth oscillators (clarinet, bass clarinet) 2 Electric Pianos 4 Synth Strings patches (strings) Enjoy- I'm rather happy with this one!

Completed November 2012 Instrumentation: 8 sawtooth oscillators (a personal instrumentation favorite now) Slow process has always fascinated me. This piece is my attempt to mitigate that obsession by taking it to its limit. The piece is 66 measures and about 44 minutes long, containing 74 notes (I think I counted that right), averaging around one note entrance every 35 seconds. I think it's saf...

Some Noise
มุมมอง 38512 ปีที่แล้ว
Completed July 2012 Instrumentation: 1 or 2 Keyboards (this recording has 2) This piece is comprised of a set of 40 chords pulsed slowly one after the other. The beginnings and ends of each chord are not explicitly notated, as the performers are meant to take aural cues from one another. Just sit back and let the sound surround you. Listen with headphones if you can, too, it's in stereo. Purcha...

Just a quick rendering of part of my favorite song of all time. Made with the help of the study score from Boosey. Instrumentation (yes, it's a bit different): 2 Clarinets in Bb Xylophone Vibraphone 5 Marimbas 4 Pianos 3 Voices Oboe [my strings samples weren't very good] Bassoon [so why not double reeds?]

    Really enjoyed the choice of instruments, seemed to provide the perfect static backdrop for the flute and glockenspiel's drifting thoughts during the first half. Awesome job by the performers interpreting their guided solos for lack of a better term.

    Did you use a score, or was it done by ear?

    • @kathrayres
      @kathrayres 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had access to a score for this - although had I been doing this by ear, I probably would have had a tough time with the harmony part on the main ostinato instruments and not much else. The rest is thankfully pretty clear.

    • @GlenTindal
      @GlenTindal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kathrayres Well, even so, you have a pretty good ear. It is kinda hard to hear all the harmonies and chords. I would have needed a score as well. I think I have a good ear as well. Good job.

    This is beautiful. All the more precious because as far as I know there are only two recordings of this masterpiece out there and one of them (The LA Phil on DG) contains several repeated bum notes. Why this beautiful work (as well as Music for a Large Ensemble) is ignored is beyond me.

      Shoot me an email @ ayrescomposition@gmail if you really want it, but I highly recommend doing it yourself from the score, since you learn a lot more by copying it out and can make more sensitive decisions when you consciously see everything that's going on!

    This is cool but the notes aren't all correct. I'm not saying this to be mean but because I want you to perfect this really cool idea. :)

    • @kathrayres
      @kathrayres 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      CrackSnortingSailor I disagree - this was a reconstruction directly from the score. I was surprised by some of the actual written pitches as well. I know that if I remade this, I would make some changes in the mixing so that the same lines are in the foreground as in the original recordings.

    • @CrackSnortingSailor

    I'm so glad people are doing stuff like this - good job. I'm still a bit dazed by the orchestration but I expect it will grow on me. :-)

  • @vintage0x
    @vintage0x 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    nice, but I don't understand your choice to pan flutes L and oboes R - since there are canons between oboes/flutes 1-2 and 3 it would make sense to put oboes 1-2 left and 3 right, and vice versa for flutes or something? still very nice though.

    • @kathrayres
      @kathrayres 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The distinct articulation patterns in the flute and oboe parts were not enough to me to differentiate the two timbres which I had set to be equal, so I substituted timbre for pan, keeping the sections each to one side to avoid ambiguity in the mixing. Much like in an ensemble playing the piece, I wanted the sound of each section to come from a distinct place, though I admit I could have done something a bit more sophisticated. I will admit to only being able to work with stereo speakers and not stereo headphones (my last pair broke), so I haven't been able to achieve the full effect of my mixing in a listening setting. Oh well, I may redo it for myself, but I don't think I'll bother re-uploading it to youtube.

    Verrrry neat! Are you going off original scores or are you going by ear? Also, would you consider sharing your arrangement in a standard MIDI file?

    • @kathrayres
      @kathrayres 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words! I'm kind of doing both, since there are certain things from the studio recordings ('93 and '76) that differ from the score and I like more than the original work's directions (for example, the Bed cadenza, or the sax/bass clarinet section of Trial/Prison, where the rhythms are altered). I'm hesitant about sharing the midi score for copyright reasons. While I have a university-sanctioned copy of the score, making it essentially freely available seems like a more serious violation of copyright than I dare try. Sorry!
