I'm glad someone made a video about this. As someone born in 1996 who is old enough to remember VHS, those obvious fake VHS effects is one of my pet peeves, with the static on screen, the "play", the timer, and the date. I just want to shout through the screen "THAT'S CAMCORDER, NOT VHS"

I have never understood why people trying to make fake VHS effect, often rely on: 1 - putting distorion and noise effect too much; 2 - adding sort of a purple tint, 3 - adding chromatic aberration 1. To achieve such intense distortion and noise, you would have to either have really crappy/unmaintained/demaged gear that is not any more able to maintain quality while recording/playing, or have done a few generations of original footage. 2. Purple tint is something that was present in some cameras, but in limited way. Back in the days when CCD was not yet in use, tube cameras were present, containing some sort of color(!) image tube like newvicon/saticon/etc. These were known for their image lag, but purple tint was only visible in situations when the thing you are filming was too bright. This resulted in light trailing and adding purple color into the trail (should not be mistaken with lens flare). 3. Chromatic aberration was present for a long time, and still is. Probably the best examples of it are videos from old 3x Saticon cameras, or 3x CCD cameras. It is a side effect of having three sensors for each component color of light. When light enters a prism, you have to adjust position of each component image to be perfectly on top of a nother, and when this setting is not perfect, you get chromatic aberration! Worth noting is fact that sometimes this effect can also be present in normal cameras with just one image sensor - then this is just tied to how the lens is constructed. The thing I absolutely hate with artificial effect of this, is that it is often used too much (like distortion/noise mentioned above), or just straight up wrong, which gives the footage even more unrealistic and fake look. Real chroma aberration usually gives different color divergence - you often see magenta/orange + cyan, magenta + green. In artificial effects it's almost always just straight up mimicking how 3D image looks without 3D glasses.. sad but true. Conclusion? For me, fake VHS effect is something done to impress public, that is not familiar with how real so called "VHS look" is really like. If you want to have this be realistic, just buy an old VHS camcorder, or VCR. It will not only be more accurate, but also a nice piece to have, because why not.

Two VHS better

The fake VHS effect is always the most obvious to me when someone lazily applies the filter to a full HD or 4K video (16:9 aspect ratio, 60hz framerate, etc). Tip for anyone trying to make a video look like it was made on a 1990s camcorder: Crop your video clip to 4:3, downconvert it to 640x480 (or 320x240 if your editing software supports it), then apply the VHS filter.

It's a bit sad that some people use fake vhs filters just to give scary to videos that aren't scary.
