At the Laboratory of Photonics and Quantum Measurements (K-LAB) in EPFL we investigate quantum effects in microscopic oscillators on a daily basis. We design and fabricate optical and mechanical mechanical micro and nano-resonators, devices which are capable of confining photons or phonons in small volumes for extended amount of time. We demonstrated that these mesoscopic objects are remarkably subject to the techniques for quantum control routinely employed on atoms, molecules and ions, by driving their dynamics with lasers or strong microwave signals.
In addition we have discovered that the nonlinear optical properties of high-Q microresonators allow the generation of optical frequency combs via soliton formation. Optical frequency combs have revolutionized frequency metrology and laser science over the past decade. Microresonator combs may spur a second revolution by enabling unprecedented integration levels, as well as high optical bandwidth and repetition rates.

Fantastic presentation! Thank you for sharing, I see many practical applications for FMCW lidar but not necessarily for vehicles. If these systems could be used for drones It would be advantageous! They could simultaneously encode information to communicate with others using LIFI. Would it not be possible for these systems not only to point map but also at a clocked rate pulse encoded information for other devices to communicate thus removing the necessity of having any rf communications? Rf is the biggest weakness of modern drones and using optical systems has many limitations and weaknesses. This is a very exciting time for lidar!

I am so stupid. I came here to find out about the Microcomb fast internet because gamers want this. Also economic, military, AI, etc this is super powerful. is it as much as quantum computers? We need a Laymen version of this to understand.

Awesome video! I attended your talk in 2017 at CLEO in San Jose. I had a quick question, I'm trying to observe OMIT in a very macroscopic system and in using two microwave signal generators I cannot get a sharp peak or dip. The observed feature is more of an envelope with no obvious feature. The signal generators are not phase locked together (one probe and one pump) and maybe that's a problem (not sure) or perhaps there is something I'm overlooking. Do you have any advice? I greatly appreciate your help!
