A Top Gear 4wd trial from 1979. It 's about 8 four wheel drives, a small competition on 'a typical summers day in England', and guess which make won the battle ...
WOW, love it, what a bunch of poofs wankin' around! Seriously tho, can't believe they just let them rally and roll the armoured car lolz! Figures the Lada, Jeep, and the Rover made it, others would have too if all given knobby tires.
So the Range Rover With all round Coil Springs is Beaten by The One With all Round Leaf Springs That it Was to Replace in a Way,What Does That Tell Us about Buying the Latest Tech ????? Keep What You Have and Dont Bother.
If that Subaru had been fitted with appropriate tyres I have few doubts it would have finished the course, possibly in a faster time than all the others. It was 6 seconds faster than the next fastest car to the bottom of the final hill and 11 seconds faster than the Land Rover at that particular point, remarkable.
Having used both a Niva and a Land Rover 88 in extreme off road conditions, for me the Niva with it's lighter weight and better agility, coupled with a little more acceleration for short spurts, wins the day.
I had a 1990 Lada Niva as my first car here in Australia. The off-road performance of the Niva was exceptionally good. Its on road performance was... pretty agricultural.
Nice two second delay at the start of the Jeep run. Top Gear has always stacked the deck against US vehicles. It's ok, we knew in 1979 as well. You can't beat a Jeep.
This is both informative and entertaining. It's rare to get both in a TV program. All too often the two qualities are considered mutually exclusive. Like good sports reporters, the hosts retreat into the background and let the action speak for itself. This was done before the age of Jeremy Clarkson. Those who seek 4wd vehicles for serious off-road use would be interested in tests like that, but most buyers of those vehicles never get off the road with them.
Try find the Subaru now 😮

The cars with road as opposed to off road tyres were bound to fail on the big slope.
Respect to the Daihatsu
Some footage
Every Cybertruck owner should have this bookmarked if they need a quick cry
Conspicuously missing is the Land Cruiser or either flavor.

I knew the lada would make it up the slope, those things are literal goats
1979 !! 😂😂 Omg!
A £9500 car and it failed lol and the niva beats them all
Rumour has it that the tank driver is still peeling potatoes
Nice chilled Sunday afternoon viewing should remake this, the commentator was excellent, could call it low gear

In the good old days when range rovers were there to do this, not for picking the kids up at school and..... being on a lift in a garage obviously
Hands up who thinks life was better in those days!!! (hand goes up)
That Renault won my heart and vote
Great Show !
Always have a soft spot for the Lada Niva. No nonsense, good carrying capacity and easy to fix.
No Land Cruiser nor Patrol or are they a different league ?
Ahem! Toyota Rando-karuza, koff koff!
I miss these style of gentle relaxed commentary. No OTT quips and hyperbole. Classy.
This was i fixed race. The Jeeps didn't make it and land rover had to win.
I have a 2008 Lada Niva and I am very happy with it. I’ll never replace it.
0:13 that intro sounds like you live on a farm in Scotland
9k pounds for a range Rover.
I had two Nivas from 2008- 2022. How I miss them now.

No surprise with the winner
The Renault 16 was just terrible on road
The Brits didn't dare to bring a Mercedes G wagon and a Toyota Land Cruiser for obvious reasons 😂
All cars rusted out two days later.
0:33 It also could be Monty Python’s 😂 Joke a side That Renault is a dream Rare as the blue Mauritius..
8:40This car is also commonly seen in Japan. Incidentally, it was a left-hand drive car.

Had a 1988 subaru sports wagon with 2 inch lift kit and 14 inch rims. Went ANYWHERE, sad subaru dont make a dedicated 4wd any more. It was a great car
I was 3 years old
He should unhook his charge cord from his microphone
Early Top gear is great for insomnia sufferers 😂
All of those larda jokes look how much there worth today...
Since then, almost all of these cars have had to undergo deep modification, only Niva has turned out well at once.
lols i had to google what 2 star petrol was
Нива лучшая!!!
I miss the small cars of the 70s/early 80s.
