I swear to god, I swear to *god* that Murph's die rolls are based on his emotional state. The worse he's feeling about his chances the worse he does, and when he gets dejected and kinda upset he gets the Freshman Year police moments. So throughout this entire season, being able to rely on Reliable Talent as a way to just say "no, actually, I'm kind of immune to your unique system you made for this season" and be the backbone for the rest of the party in terms of stress and information gave him that boost to just fucking blow it out of the water in terms of good rolls. He was hype and in his groove all throughout Junior Year and it came through with things like the Baron 1 and this episode's Nat 20

Ragh shrugging while unconvincingly muttering to Kristen that Nara's not as cool as Kristen while Kristen coldly squints at Ragh is some incredible improv coming from Brennan and Ally. The comedic and dramatic choices made when the Intrepid Heroes get together make for the most meaningful moments in modern storytelling.
