Same reason people always use substances…trauma, mostly. I study this in graduate school because both my dad and I went through it, but I’m in recovery and want to help other people. I was just like this, at one time.

@@mickeybeavison1053 I wish I’d known this before I left home, at 14…the streets have a LOT of rules. And the punishments are worse than just about anywhere. The only reward is street credentials, but those will put you on the Background Check list for any other job or apartment, so you better hope you like doing dates and don’t run into a psycho or a gang who wants to work you cross country and leave you in a ditch or a highway exit, if you’re lucky (not saying “you” personally…just a figure of speech). Worse yet, a boyfriend who wants to be a P, and loves you as long as you’re the life of the party and keep his his lazy butt high. Ladies, that’s not a P. Men who actually have a family business, and who are really men, invest in their business, not bleed it dry going to strip clubs or smoking and keeping their employees doing the same. I don’t mean to be hard on men with addictions, because that’s rough, but it’s no party for a female. A lot of these square boyfriends who live off their partners think the woman is freaking the whole city and “do the same thing,” while getting mad at the one who loves them so much they will risk their lives, because they don’t want him to take a F on his report card. Meanwhile, in my state, they don’t let a girl with a record of being exploited work at a daycare, volunteer in their kids’ schools or park activities, work as a home health aide or in health care, period, in schools, shelters or anywhere else helping vulnerable people like they were, for 15 YEARS! That’s most meaningful work women want to do in life…all because this society blames the victim. With a good partner, they won’t let you use or become a victim, but unless you know how to read minds, it’s hard to spot a fake, sometimes…especially if you’re using. A lot of women who were ever in the life and people who ever had a substance use disorder have an extremely hard time ever getting medical and dental care. If you’re on Suboxone or have ever OD’d, it’s on your medical record for life. Underfunded, overworked medical professionals think it’s OK to refuse an addict care because they assume they don’t care for their health, and they don’t know how often people recover and what good people recovery people are. They still ask me 5 times if I’m lying and using drogs, when I go to the ER with asthma & won’t send me home with even antibiotics “in case you take something you don’t tell us about & OD. “. That’s a liability. I’ve been sober almost 10 years and have worked in shelters and treatment centers. To doctors, I’m still a drug addicted prostitute who they assume has conned doctors out of pain pills (which I’ve refused all those 10 years, even after surgery), and never did con the medical system. Im not judging those who have, because addiction changes the brain and won’t let you know something is wrong. The brain can fully heal, but it takes 1-3 years of not using to get there & your own brain will tell you to get high…it mistakes it for something that is vital to survive. I was just a pain patient who needed medication to function. Best believe I never misused medication or asked for anything I didn’t need because I already knew. I wasn’t a partier, and was told (based on fake research) that OC was non-addictive. This was before the Opioid Crisis was in the news, and a lot of people developed substance use disorders because they trusted their doctor. I’m just one of millions, Lastly, addiction is a very boring life! Maybe not always, for the first few weeks or months, but after a short time, it’s grinding all the time to wait in a parking lot for hours or chase some d boi all over town. And sometimes you don’t get nothing, anyway, or it makes you sick. Or it takes your life. If you’re using, get help if you can, ASSP! It usually takes multiple treatments, not one. If I’d known that, I would have started sooner! If you’re broke, there is another way that will get you a resume, not a “resume,” as in a sheet a mile long or in some psycho’s trunk. If you were hurt and lied to by your family or anyone, as a kid, it’s not your fault. There are people who understand and want to help! Not that many have the opportunity to help. Most of the people who have the power to decide your fate are not about to understand, because they never lived it or met people who did. A lot of people are looking for freedom from trauma, but the streets is just a whole lot more of it. To anyone thinking about working in the industry, if there’s anything else you can do, do it! An honest P will tell you the same thing. If you’re out there because you don’t have other opportunities, you might understand others on the street enough to survive it, but you do deserve a better life! Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t, or you can’t! Love to all my brothers and sisters on the streets! You are capable of recovery, and being anything you want. This world needs you and your experience! ❤️‍🩹
