How to fat this touch up kit?

We followed the instructions to install the square pan for a corner shower. The flange does not adhere to the wall no matter what we do. It sticks out and the tiles will not lay flush against the wall. One option is to add more backerboard to the top of the flange and then seal the seam. Are there any other options to prevent having to literally add additional wall boards for this flange? Can we just trim it off? Surely other customers have had this issue in the past? As others have commented, normally backerboard goes in front of the flange. Any advice is appreciated to try to salvage this shower without a ton of additional work. Thanks

The flange is screwed to the shower base. In the event of 'floor settling' (as cautioned by the presenter) the flange behind the tile will be pulled downward with the shower base. Does this not have serious negative implications for the tiles or tile portions bonded to the flange (debonding) - and/or the silicone joint sealing the tiles to the shower base? Can I assume small wall tile are not recommended in light that the flange is not bonded to the wall board and (regardless) the tile adhesive may not bond to the plastic flange material in the first place?

I thought, for typical shower pan installations, the backer board should be placed on top of the flange and not behind it. Any reason why castico instructs you to do something different?
