    Dear Kelly, this is amazing information, not just for SLPs but for parents like myself with children who are struggling. My question is, what is the appropriate level of difficulty of stories that I should be reading and having my 4.5 year old daughter retell to improve her comprehension, pragmatics etc. Thank you so much for giving so much of yourself.

    • @KellyVessSLP
      @KellyVessSLP 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Joy, SImple stories get the job done! In my weekly SIS Membership activities, there is always a new story included that has the child identify the following five aspects: Character, Setting, Problem, Emotion, Action, and Consequence. This provides a strong foundation for years and years to come.

    Hello! My son is 8 years old and having same issues with speech. Can I use the paragraph method or is it too late? Thank you so much!!

    • @KellyVessSLP
      @KellyVessSLP 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes! The paragraph method contains the most challenging and complex 3-element and 2-elements clusters in the English language. This results in a cascading impact. Half of my SIS Members are elementary SLPs and report great success. Good luck!

  • @zahavafriedman3954
    @zahavafriedman3954 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Thanks for your awesome work! When you say “do a paragraph” do you mean memorize it and recite it? Are you saying memorizing and reciting a few complex paragraphs a year boosts their overall complexity of language? How do you formulate these complex paragraphs to meet the needs of individuals?

    • @KellyVessSLP
      @KellyVessSLP 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for your great question. The paragraphs serve to develop automaticity in conjoining multiple clauses through the use of temporal (time-related) and causal (logic-related) conjunctions. The speech targets are the most complex 3-element and 2-element clustered in the English language. This results in a cascading downward impact in which easier-developing sounds naturally develop ('skr' blends results in the natural development of p, b, t, d, k, g, f, v, s, z, etc.. Our research has found that this will spontaneous development will occur in the same developmental order but at a quicker pace. Good thoughts to you in the important work you do, Kelly

  • @ChristinaJRapp

  • @ChristinaJRapp
    @ChristinaJRapp หลายเดือนก่อน

    Do you use the same paragraph over and over or do you have different paragraphs for the child? And does the paragraph work with three and four-year-olds?

    • @KellyVessSLP
      @KellyVessSLP หลายเดือนก่อน

      In our membership, we alternate four different paragraphs over the course of the year.

    • @KellyVessSLP
      @KellyVessSLP หลายเดือนก่อน

      I use the paragraph with three and four year olds. with a maximum level of support to start.

  • @kurokuma2485

    Very interesting... Does this methodology apply to non-verbal - zero word level, toddlers?

    • @KellyVessSLP
      @KellyVessSLP หลายเดือนก่อน

      I find many 'not speaking yet' toddlers with Autism to have letters, numbers, colors as their first words, which is FANTASTIC. Consistency is key! When children are consistently saying words, typically there's a cascading effect in which many new ones naturally emerge.

    Your podcast triggered a thought about Halloween that I am experiencing right now. I struggle with social interactions outside of work. One of my clients invited me to their Halloween party. Panic! I've never been to a Halloween party in my life and always stay home. But, something interesting happened. I have a lot going on in my life and was kind of depressed. First, making a decision about a costume on a Monday was very freeing. Then on Friday evening when my day and week were done, I'm telling myself I need to go home and get caught up on my paperwork. Instead, I went to Spirit Halloween, another place I've never been, to see what I could find. Then, I went to Goodwill to find things I could piece together. I went homes and ordered some things that would help make the costume. I don't know how much time I spent. I forgot about my paperwork and everything else, and felt happy for the first time in a long time. So, any person of any age who's mind is consumed with other thoughts can benefit from focusing on Halloween. We don't know what our kiddos with limited speech are thinking, but they do experience a lot of stress and frustration. I now see the benefit of focusing on Halloween.

    This one came with the chills of inspiration I needed! As a parent I never really thought about how social media might be affecting the advice I get from SLPs... I certainly feel that much of what's being offered about teaching/"treating" children on the spectrum is very cookie cutter approach. The word "spectrum" tells us everything we need to know... One size will not fit all! Every approach needs to be tailored. I love the Bhagavad Gita analogy. It's a great reminder that I am not only my son's teacher, but I am his student as well. Thanks again Kelly! 💛
