    Technically always rounding down is false. In most cases you do round down, however not in every case. The most common exception is if you take average Hit Points instead of rolling. I think there is also some class features that you round up with.

    Me and my group enjoy the challenge of encumbrance. We don’t use it all the time but if you’re off down a dungeon or mine, or on a journey where you can’t take a cart then you can only take what you can carry. It adds an extra dimension and challenge to the game.

    Ryan love this. went to the guild threw you a few bucks ( plus pick up your Crypt of Kolos too). Might I also suggest adding to the DM tools a table of the schools/types of magic and a brief description. Whenever anybody does detect magic and finds it they always ask what kind. Might be handy in a table for fast use. thx for everything!!

    personally I find Icespire Peak kinda underwhelming, namely due to the notice board due to how videogamey it feels. As someone who plays heavily modded Skyrim it reminds me of the Missives mod where its some decent coin as a reward at the start but as you get to higher levels you just feel like ignoring it. Despite LMoP being the 'linear' adventure it has better ways of giving out quests i.e talking to people and joining factions as rewards

      I just saw a comic of faux medieval adventurer types walking up to a job board, look at it for a beat, than announce none of them can read, as the average person in that sort of setting is very likely illiterate. Some people love the gamey aspect of the quest cards, a lot of us would rather it feel more narratively organic. I do love the image of Harbin Wester sneaking out in the dead of night to post things than running because inside to lock his door again.

    How did you decide which characters were attacked by the goblins? Is that just the DM's prerogative?

    • @RdotDoyle
      @RdotDoyle 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great question! I try to roleplay the monster as much as I can, so sometimes their dumb and go for whoever is in front of them, proud and go after the biggest looking threat, a smart monster is going to be a master tactician. "Who hit me last" or "who hits the hardest" are good baseline questions too. Sometimes I'll let the dice decide, especially when I don't have a good reason for the monster in mind and it's a big powerful attack.

    🥳🫂👍🏿 Love a good zine - brings me back to a part of my youth I never got to participate in - big fan of throwing all your ideas out there - best of luck with the kickstarter - Nimble just pulverized their target, and the stretch goals alone have added lots of extra work for Evan - Dad always said, “it’s hard to like hard work.” I always say, “hard work is hard” - much of my job can be lonely, and the idea of having an intentional space to share that common stress is very nice - I hear a lot of creators say they don’t really tell people what they do and don’t like the idea of their friends and family watching their videos - least favorite: interpersonal conflict that ends up being my job to sort out (as the DM) - sounds similar - I’ve been talking with one of my friends about paid games for this very reason - he told me he heard of a group that doesn’t even pay the DM, they all just give it to him and he donates it to a charity - next game: doppelgangers as an infectious disease produced by a fungal lord (warlock patron) attempting to take over the sanctuary metropolis for the main world - I keep a list of “loose ends” that I reincorporate into the game any time I get a chance - doors do take a surprising amount of time to get thru - we had that happen recently - other times, I’ve narrated them walking thru it, because there were no consequences to barging thru, and I didn’t want them to spend 45 minutes debating, checking for traps, coming up with absurd ways to open it from a distance, etc. - having an emotional investment is the best ways to get the players to really buy in and engage about people and events they encounter - this is why there’s the joke: wow the players really love this character [inner voice: kill them!] - my favorite mimic is a little music box - not sure mimics can be cute, but if any of them could be, that’d be it - Quinton Reviews says that’s kind of how youtube success works: once you make a video that pops off, make that video (a very similar video) 5 more times - then you’ll have an audience and a niche and can expand from there - these days I have a weekly in person game on Tuesday nights, and we play even if we’re missing people, which I think is what makes the system work - it’s been ongoing for a couple years now, so it’s ingrained into our lives - it was easy in high school: game every Friday and Saturday for 12 hours at a time, but life has changed, and it’s a lot harder to play for so long and so often - I’m very lucky with my current group, especially because they tolerate my constant house ruling

    🥳🫂👍🏿 Been going to Wally for a while getting ideas for puzzles - wow, the red box - that’d be awesome - do either of you have the experience necessary to give your thoughts on BECMI vs BX? Ah yes, traps and puzzles - I subscribe to the view that a good trap is either a puzzle or a hazard - a secret button you step on that explodes and kills you is very much more realistic as far as traps would be (e.g., IEDs) but don’t make for as much fun - I started playing during 2e, and even way back then, the idea you could just die right off the rip from a single bad roll just seemed so weird, and I honestly never got used to it - hard to come up with good advice that hasn’t already been said, but “slow down” is a great piece of wisdom - in my job, we are encouraged to wait and listen, and that is a very valuable skill for a DM - I do love to listen to my players discuss what to do - at some point I may give them a little prodding to move along - I’ve been experimenting with so many different systems lately it’s hard to know what I’m “working on” - I’ve been enjoying using some older systems lately, such as reaction rolls - random tables have also been very helpful with sparking ideas - we’ve been playing in a sanctuary metropolis for the past few months, and it took a bit to get comfortable just running a dense urban environment - esoteric suggestion on that: Dortoka City on the Sea of Glass - Web DM recommended it, and I was not disappointed - there’s a lot of useful info in that little book - love a “weird little guy” - world building detail… I love a good map - pantheons are great - in my old world, there were three “over gods” and a collection of regents that were go betweens for mortals and gods (sort of like saints) that people would pray to and gain their power from - speaking of MTG, on my house rule quest, I saw a guy using the MTG library website that will give you a random card on a click as inspiration - usually the flavor text would be something he could spin into a part of the story - TTRPG highlight reel… I always love when players take things in a totally different, narratively satisfying direction - we had an encounter that I assumed would be a final battle with the BBEG, and the players negotiated their way out of it by appealing to her interests, and one of them sacrificed himself, agreeing to stay behind to work for the BBEG, to save the characters that were his surrogate children - it was such a poignant moment - as a player… I have had far fewer opportunities to play rather than DM, but I had a great character in Red Hand of Doom named Benevolent, Lion of Brindol - he was a paladin with a giant golden hammer who always shouted to “Fear the Flame of Benevolent, Lion of Brindol” - he once crashed his hippogriff thru a wall to take out an assassin sniper which totally shocked everyone at the table, including the DM - it was awesome - I agree that being DM is the best seat at the table - sources other than TTRPGs include books, videos, other games, random tables… reading the first book of the Dresden Files had a big impact on the way I constructed magic in my world - for me, research is inspiration - GTA 3 was a great pastime in my childhood, we’d just drive around listening to the radio (chatterbox was king) - the last game I played was Inscryption - super game - definitely recommend - full of surprises - yes, d6, homebrew, slot based, probably cleric but I’d like it to be wizard, drow or aasimar, standard array, balance, no flying PCs, Amazing Wizard’s “Running a Maze or Labyrinth with Cards”, Nimble - congrats on the puzzle book - also looking forward to your book Ryan

      Thank you for frequenting my channel for puzzles, much appreciated! For BECMI vs B/X. I play BECMI and have published some videos with it, but honestly, I don't find too much of a difference between the two. I've even recently picked up Old School Essentials which is basically a B/X clone. But yeah, I think BECMI and the Rules Cyclopedia have much more to offer with regards to rules and content, but mechanic wise, not a whole lot of difference between the two (at the earlier levels anyway). Hope this helps. Cheers!

      @@WallyDM many thanks - I’ve noticed that many of the OSR clones focus on B/X - I have the rules cyclopedia and think is great, but I’m curious why it’s less often rebuilt and remixed compared to B/X - maybe just an artifact of the first modern conversions referencing one over the other

    • @WallyDM

      @@TwinSteel perhaps. Hmmm. Could also be a copyright issue, but I'm speculating. Also, the Rules Cyclopedia is riddled with errors and incoherent rules. About to run this adventure. Your videos gave me a ton of ideas. Thanks a lot. Was thinking about kobolds in the abandoned storageroom. I intend to play kobolds as intelligent creatures and I imagine that if they found themselves in serious trouble, the last one or two could try to run towards the throne room as you pointed. What about the hall trap? Would you rule that they know about it (its not clear to me if they set that up; it seems it predates the kobolds) and they just jump over it? Would they trigger it? Perhaps if the PCs see the kobolds jumping over some floor tiles it can give them a hint about the trap.

    The downtime is great I will say depending on how invested the characters are in the town downtime might not convince them to stick around so I might suggest if you want something that takes up a significant length of time in game would be to run a condensed version of the lost laboratory of qualish from extra life and say that the reason they are going there is because they found paperwork and maybe some designs from qualesh in the wave echo cave

    I've been following the channel and all the guidance surrounding LMoP, P&BSO and now DoIP. I started my group with P&BSO so I didn't know what to do about DoIP, but I came up with this idea: It happens AFTER the Mine starts producing Magical Items after all, Dragons love magic Items and gold... I wonder if this could be the adventure in between the Psionic Goblin invasion and started of the second part of P&BSO.

    • @RdotDoyle
      @RdotDoyle 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That could definitely work! I think I'd cherry pick a few parts of DoIP over running the whole thing but the most appealing part of this box to me is it's easy to kit bash with LMoP

    Looking a the book and seeing the maps with squares and characters having movement. I'm kind of confused on how to DM the battle phases and how movement works and letting the characters make their decisions in battle. It's been 20 years since I played DND now my kids want to run this adventure and I've never DMd before. I want it to be a great experience but I'm also trying to get the grasp of how to keep them engaged and make sure I don't absolutely mess up the whole story by not knowing battle tactics and not knowing if I should let them take certain quests or not off of the board based on how difficult it is.

      It's natural to have a lot of worries before you set out and I've got a video about Anxiety and D&D that is one of my favorites on this channel. I'm convinced you and your kids are going to have an awesome time and that the best way to get comfortable answering all of these question is by jumping in
