Kayaking Entire Tennessee River! Watts Bar - Day 4 with Haven Tent Hammock
Last day of the trip for this section.
Waking up to a nice blue catfish on the line began a beautiful day on the Tennessee River. It was the best weather of the trip and bald eagles added to the scenery.
I take out in Kingston and plan for the return.

River rat life has set in and the paddle was beautiful even though it was cold. Saw some bald eagles, had some great food and tried the Haven Tent as a ground shelter for the first time.

Kayaking Entire Tennessee River, Days 3 & 4 (Fort Loudoun Lake)
มุมมอง 4483 ปีที่แล้ว
We finish paddling down the Fort Loudoun Lake impoundment of the Tennessee River! I ran out of batteries after 3 days on the river so I decided to combine days 3 and 4. I met my wife, Aliki for a gear swap after day 3 and pressed on! Finishing the tour we'll see the lower half of the lake which is mostly a flat water paddle. There's lots of beautiful sights to see as the reservoir becomes more ...
Kayaking Entire Tennessee River, Day 2
มุมมอง 8883 ปีที่แล้ว
Second day of kayaking the Tennessee River. Starting with a foggy "Smokey Mountain" morning, we make some miles down Fort Loudoun Lake and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. It was a perfect day: seeing amazing wildlife and ending with an adventurous hammock camp on an island near Louisville, TN.
Kayaking Entire Tennessee River, Day 1 (Kayaking Knoxville)
มุมมอง 3.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
We begin the journey down the Tennessee River from the "source" down to Fort Loudoun Dam. We go through downtown Knoxville and see the views from the water as we paddle... Ijams, Calhoun's, Neyland Stadium, Thompson-Boling Arena and more! We will hammock camp on the river along the way and do a bit of fishing as time allows.

I am planning a trip in canoe from Douglas dam to Ish Creek Louisville, are there any tips you recommend? It logs at 71 miles and I feel we can make it in three days together summer hours. Any idea how it will go mph wise?

@ActionMatt Sounds like an epic trip! You'll find that after you get around I.C. King park the current will slow and it will become more of a flatwater paddle. Wind will affect you more. Summer pool lake levels mean that the banks might be hard to make landings because there will be no beach like in my videos (done in winter with lake draw down.) You'll find your pace but you will have to be realistic about trying to push on hoping to make the next camp as there are long stretches with nothing available. Give yourself more time than you think you need and enjoy a comfortable ride more than rushing to make miles.

Your daytrip runs will be perfect scouting exercises and you'll be fine. TBH you should just add another 6 hours and take out in Lenoir by the Calhouns so you can say you did the whole thing from dam to dam!

It’s me again. Hope all is well. I just completed your same run this week!!! Tellico Dam to Kingston, Wow what a long way. 34.5 miles. There are couple things I learned. I under estimated the need for gloves. My hands are very sore. My plans were to go to watts bar dam, and I was making good time, but my hands are give out. So lesson 1 for anyone else reading this. Take kayaking/canoe gloves. 2nd lesson I learned, in your videos, it appears you had several shorelines to camp on. I did not have that at all. None what’s so ever. I followed the TWA website for nonrestrictive land to camp on. When I got there, I was unable to camp due to no shoreline for the islands etc…. . The area was to thick to put up a tent. So that really threw me off, big time. I had to row further down stream to try to find a place. The 1st night (Past I-75). I end up staying in a field on the back of a golf course right past I-75. Thank goodness no one ran me off. I got there late and left early. I was so wore out that 1st night. I end up doing 18.5 miles that day. Part of the reason I decided to cut my trip short, I was a little worried about finding locations to sleep, plus my hands were getting sore. Other then those things it went great. My solo canoe handled very well with the gear, plus my dog. Water was smooth, no issues. Water still warm enough to swim in and cool off. As you said, there are parts down there the wind blows hard. So definitely have to factor that in. Great trip, like you I will start from Kingston next time and go to Watts Bar Dam. I heard Thief island is good to camp on. Guess we will find out one day. Paddles up!!!!

    • @kayakflyfishing9754
      @kayakflyfishing9754 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Wow! Super glad you had a safe trip! Yes, part of the reason I do this in winter is the lakes draw down and expose shoreline to use. Technically, any part of that exposed land is still the river and usable by the public. I'm looking forward to the season changing and getting back outdoors more. Thanks for sharing your experiences, it helps to know what other experiences are!

Yes I'm planning on doing the next leg after the winter drawdown of the water levels... it exposes more beach for public access. I did a lot of planning using Google Maps and then pre-scouting any sketchy areas to lay eyes on them personally to make sure the river was passable. (like between Ijams and the Airport Island to make sure there weren't blowdowns blocking my way) I made a short video about this subject in fact: th-cam.com/video/soqsSdip358/w-d-xo.html Good luck and enjoy your paddle! For bigger water like the Tennessee River Reservoirs or Great Lakes I move up to my Trident 15. I see many similarities between these big waters and saltwater conditions. There are also a lot of inconsiderate boats which could ruin your day pretty quickly on the reservoirs unless you have a nice STABLE kayak. Anything you can stand up in is usually fine like many of the peddle kayaks. I also like the extra room to pack camping supplies in! Kayak Fly Fishing Whenever I go camping with my kids, I put black bear attractant at the base of their hammock trees too...it’s just basic survival skills. Thanks for the info!
