I met Steve for the last time about 4 years ago in the Joiners Arms. I think I passed on some flu virus in exchange for a coke which Steve bought for me. I first met Steve when I was 10, and travelled to school with him every day in a taxi along with some from the Weaver family who lived in Spoonley I think. In the 70s we had a band called Mustang and played a few gigs, not many, mostly in Hodnet. Other members of the band were Chris Owen (drums), Mark Chrysanthou (Bass) and of course myself sharing rhythm and lead with Steve. Steve was a great guy with a big heart and leaves behind many good memories, some of them funny. Every time an amplifier started playing up, Steve's first instinct was to plug in the soldering iron and get out the araldite. He was never short of a lead break, and always strove to get that raunchy sound. He had a better gut feeling for music which touched the soul than any of the rest of us in the band. His call to listen to more blues went unheard, but with hindsight it was the right advice. In 1975 I stole my first Bible from the school. It was falling to pieces so I more or less rescued it from the bin, but technically I stole it. I wanted to find space aliens in it, but instead I found out something about the true meaning of life. In James 4:14 is reads "yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes". I am glad to have known Steve, and to have shared some good times together. His little time is over.
