BMCAA UnCon 2022 | Beyond BMC: Roads Less Traveled
Mark Belan & Geoffrey Cheung join the BMCAA for their annual UnConference (UnCon) in 2022 to share about their professional trajectories after graduating from BMC.
Mark Belan "Making Infographics with Visual Capitalist"
Description: This presentation will talk about Mark's personal career journey creating scientific visuals and infographics. It will also trace his path to working with Visual Capitalist, an online visual media company that specializes in infographics and data visualizations. There will be a suite of examples of artwork and visualization graphics, along with a feature of the Creator Program: a monetized platform on Visual Capitalist for any and all visual communicators and data designers-including you!
About the speaker: Mark is the Visual Scientific Communications Specialist at Visual Capitalist, an online visual media company specializing in infographics and data visualizations. Since graduating from the BMC-1T7 cohort, he has built a career in visually communicating all things science, from infographics to research diagrams to museum and exhibition materials. Check out artscistudios.com for more of his work!
Geoffrey Cheung "A Scientist's Journey into Visual Arts"
Description of talk: Geoff has always been, and continues to be, passionate about science. However, during his nearly twenty years working in Biomedical Communications, he couldn’t help but notice that he was always drawn to the conceptual, qualitative, and social aspects of our work. In acknowledging this, he decided to make a jump into visual arts. Since then, he's been challenged with new ways of thinking. He has also been surprised to find that old skills and methods, honed in the name of science and communication, continue to serve him well. He shares what he's learned on his journey into fine arts.
About the speaker: Geoffrey Lok-Fay Cheung is an artist interested themes of tension, memory, and land in relation to issues of identity, culture, and the immigrant experience. His current research is autoethnographical, informed by lived experiences growing up as a queer first-generation Chinese-Canadian. He is now living in Vancouver in pursuit of a Master of Fine Arts degree from Emily Carr University. Previously, he worked as an independent Science Communicator in Toronto, and before that, he had also worked for various studios in Boston and New York. He received his Master of Science from the University of Toronto, and Bachelor of Science from Queen’s University.

Great presentation with a positive tone and well-considered message.

Thanks for your videos. How do you add hydrogen bonds using chimera? I am using pdb files but they don't come with hydrogen atoms. Thank you.
Thanks Daniel. In Chimera, you go Tools > Structure Editing > AddH. It gives you a few options, and then you can save the modified pdb. Hope that helps. In ChimeraX, the process is a little different. I believe you have to run a command: addh #1 (where 1 is the number of molecule?) - off the top of my head.
@@biocinematics Sorry I never responded. Thank you!!! Your videos have been so helpful to me in projects and work!
Awesome presentation.
i got puzzled picking up maya or houdini! what's good about me is that i love to work and i can learn so hard even tho i already started learning python 2 months ago and i am on my way to master it cuz i know it's quite a necessary thing that will help me more in vfx career but the biggest problem is just that which software to pick up! i totally into vfx which mea i have to pick up houdini but i would like to model which houdini can handle modeling but its waste of time modeling inside houdini may this problem can get solved with a plugin but however houdini can't animate sculpt as much good as maya and also maya can't do crazy amazing vfx as much as houdini and i am literally confused
Is there an HDA (of your PDB import and processing) that you talk about here available somewhere (for purchase or otherwise)? Excellent presentation, very helpful.
Thanks Larry. Sorry for the late reply. Unfortunately my HDA tools aren't ready to be public-facing, they're a bit too idiosyncratic and custom built for my various purposes. As I continue developing the tools, I am definitely considering how I could distribute them appropriately. Stay tuned.
I'm a dentist, doing my masters in pathology, I've been working with Photoshop, corel, illustrator for past 14 years, just by myself for my father's designing and printing press business. Is it possible to do medical illustration as a hobby time earning?
Thank you! This is very informative and eye opening.
