Use (a+b)², (a+b)³....and transpose some terms to get these formulae
It's better not to commit these formulae into memory. Problems such as these can easily be solved as follows: x+1/x=5 -- (i) Squaring both sides, we get: x²+2.x.(1/x)+1/x²=5² [using (a+b)²=a²+2ab+b²] i.e., x²+2+1/x²=25 or x²+1/x²=25-2=23 -- (ii) Now, multiplyng (i) by (ii), we get: (x+1/x)(x²+1/x²)=5*23=115 i.e., x³+1/x+x+1/x³=115 But x+1/x=5, and so we get: x³+1/x³=115-5=110 -- (iii) You can continue in the same fashion to get x⁴+1/x⁴ or you can use (iii). Squaring both sides of (iii), we get: x⁴+1/x⁴+2.x⁴.1/⁴=23²=529 i.e., x⁴+1/x⁴+2=529 => x⁴+1/x⁴=529-2=527 -- (iv) Multiplying (i) by (iv) -- or -- multiplying both sides of (ii) and (iii), we can find the value of x⁵+1/x⁵. Let's use (ii) and (iii). we get: (x²+1/x²)(x³+1/x³)=23*110 i.e., x⁵+1/x+x+1/x⁵=2530 But x+1/x=5. Thus, x⁵+1/x⁵=2530-5=2525 and so on
For √(ABCD + 1) where A, B, C, & D are consecutive integers, the answer can be shown to be A*D + 1 or B*C - 1. Choose the pair that's easiest to multiply.
