Flooded Creek - Iowa Duck & Pheasant Hunting
Thanks to beavers and 5 inches of fall rain, this section of creek flooded out into the surrounding cornfield. It created some kind of hidden oasis for ducks and pheasant, and even snipe! This hunt started a recent theme where we seem to not shoot a pheasant until we have shot a duck. No complaining here! The highlight of this hunt was dropping a rooster that was being chased by a hawk. It's not often you find a rooster flying toward you!

Smackfest 2024 - Iowa Pheasant and Wood Duck Slam
มุมมอง 973หลายเดือนก่อน
Our Iowa pheasant opener tradition, deemed the "Smackfest," was back in full operation this fall. Smackfest is simple. It starts with a quick and chaotic limit of Wood Ducks on a small farm pond, followed by the first pheasant action of the season. Some years the woodies are gone, or other times the roosters are hard to find. This year was about as good as it has ever been.
Banded Woody - Iowa Duck Hunting
มุมมอง 167หลายเดือนก่อน
A dark and cloudy morning turned into a memory forever. With water levels dropping, our hopes for the duck season have also been dropping, but a short mid-week hunt turned that around. We delayed our shooting time to allow the sun to rise until we could see birds on the water. After some serious water swatting, we discovered a banded drake wood duck. This is our first banded duck as a family, a...
Duck Opener 2024 (4 Limits) - Iowa Duck Hunting
มุมมอง 1.4K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Every duck hunter knows the real duck season starts in October. Teal season is only a taste that whets the appetite for the real thing. Unseasonably warm temps kept us skeptical of success, but we were granted with an amazing waterfowl experience. The first morning started slow, as we listened to all the other hunters in the area blasting away. Then the migrating teal showed up, and it was our ...
Teal Season 2024 - Iowa Duck Hunting
มุมมอง 2432 หลายเดือนก่อน
Teal season is a big deal for the Mawhee crew. It’s our first taste of hunting action after months of waiting. This season didn’t shape up like previous ones, but we can’t control the migration. Despite limited success, we came away with 3 weeks worth of wetland exploration, wildlife encounters, and the excitement of being back in the blind.
Cutting 100 Trees - CRP Management

We are always willing to help the landowners of the places we hunt. Not only is it helpful to the landowner, but also greatly enjoy any kind of habitat work, no matter how difficult. This particular property is where we have our duck blind. The CRP on the property has not been maintained and was full of mature cottonwoods and willows. The trees had to be removed to keep in compliance with the C...

All the action from the 2023 season. From Blue-winged Teal in September, to roosters in January. All the bad shooting, and some good. It was a challenging waterfowl season, but an extraordinary pheasant season in Iowa. More great memories in the books.
The Last Hunt of 2023 - Iowa Pheasant Hunting
มุมมอง 1.3K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
Our final hunt of Iowa’s 23-24 season. The day started slow, and didn’t find many roosters in the usual spots. We knew we would find them eventually, and we sure did. There’s no better way to end a season, than with a successful day of hunting alongside family and friends.
300 Acre Flank - Iowa Pheasant Hunting
มุมมอง 4.1K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Each adventure in the field offers the opportunity to learn and adjust hunting tactics. This property is nearly 300 acres of excellent CRP habitat. The plentiful and continuous cover allows birds to move in any direction, and we often find that most escape at the corners of the property. This day, we decided to send flankers to block the main escape. Total success is hard to gauge, especially w...
Hunting the Same Creek Twice - Iowa Pheasant Hunting

We often hunt properties multiple times per season. It can be useful to compare success rates after hunting pressure and weather changes impact bird behavior. A key point discussed in this video is learning by experience or trial and error. We never know exactly how a hunt will play out, but we do our best to make a plan based on what we know from past experiences. When roosters give us the sli...
8 Bonus Hunts of 2023 - Iowa Pheasant Hunting

Earned Every Feather - Iowa Pheasant Hunting
มุมมอง 1.8K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
300 acres is a lot of ground for 5 hunters and 1 dog to cover. This property is well managed, with some of the best native grass habitat we’ve seen, and it shows by the number of birds that can be found. With so much habitat available, the birds always have an escape route. Later in the season, after multiple hunting parties have swept through the property, it can be a real challenge to pin dow...
First Snow 2023 - Iowa Pheasant Hunting
มุมมอง 19Kปีที่แล้ว
Every bird hunter knows the best time to chase birds is right after the first snow. Snow exposes fresh tracks, and keeps birds in cover. The common occurrence on this hunt, was finding increasing numbers of tracks before flushing a tight holding group of roosters. We actually started this day with our last duck hunt of the season. But after a couple hours of seeing no ducks, we all knew we’d ra...
Roosters in the Ragweed - Iowa Pheasant Hunting
มุมมอง 4.1Kปีที่แล้ว
Ragweed has become a key ingredient for finding roosters in Iowa. The weeds have a high seed count, and are rich in energy. Locate good patches of ragweed and grass, adjacent to corn, and you’re almost guaranteed to find some birds. The final stop on this hunt, we visit what we call “the weed patch.” A huge swath of giant ragweed that is near impossible to navigate by both dogs and hunters. Thi...
Crafty Roosters - Iowa Pheasant Hunting

This hunt was a challenge. We’re down on dog-power this season, and are seeing the impacts. We’re walking past some birds, and not able to catch up to others. While we saw more birds than we bagged, we’re still grateful for the opportunities we had, and are thankful to generous landowners who allow access to thei...

What airbrush did you use in this video?
Just a cheap one from Menards. Nothing fancy
5:18 that was awesome.
You would think “what are the chances?” But that’s the 2nd time it’s happened!
duck hunt was hard to watch, wowza, bent barrels
Hard to get clean shots in the dark unless they’re on the water. And it was fast and constant. A guys nerves comes into play when you watch hundreds of wood ducks coming in.
Been waiting all year for another pheasant vid, great work
The wait is over and there’s more to come! Appreciate the support
You had every opportunity with that title to make it dirty... I commend your self restraint 😂. Awesome hunt!
No dirty titles here, just some dirty hunting action! Thanks man!
What part of the state is this?
Central
Awesome stuff guys, that looked like one to remember!
Respect shoot left gets left bird right gets left bird. Don’t get greedy.
Getting me amped up for my annual trip! Molly and I are getting excited for another season!!
We’re all getting excited! Hope you have a successful trip!
NO PLUG IN YOUR GUN , REAL SPORTING !!!!! A HOLE !!!!
Go take your ego somewhere else pal. We don’t do it for the sport, we do it for birds in the bag.
It's all sporting if you follow the law and make considerable effort to retrieve the birds you ... if the state law allows no plug for pheasant (like Kansas), then no harm, no foul. You also have to consider why the state allows no plug, which is they have plenty of birds to allow unlimited shots.
@@TrevorSperry lol..... your not in kansas when you did that ....
@WASHINGTONSTATEDOGTRAINER I didn't make this video so not sure where this took place... kansas doesn't require a plug for pheasant hunting.
@@TrevorSperry this is in Iowa. Plugs are not required. We choose to keep plugs in until duck season is over. By then, pheasant are in larger late season groups and it’s handy to have 5 shots when you flush double digit birds
They taste the same in the water or from the air! Nice blind set-up. Double retrieve from the pup - fantastic.
Thanks Tom! We built the blind in Aug 2020 and got 1 season out of it before 3 years of drought. These were our first hunts back
Hey what gorpro you guys use???? I need to find one with that quality
We use hero 8’s, but any model above the 8 is just as good or better, depends on what you can afford. The key to better video is recording quality and upload quality. I record at 2.7k resolution 60fps and always upload to TH-cam using the highest bitrate possible (80k)
KEEP SLAMING THEN TRUCK DOORS.
The birds get their warning!
be cool to meet up and run my 2.5 year old short hair. she's a big runner and hunts wide enough for 3 or 4 guys, don't even need to shoot just love doing dog work.
If you’re in central Iowa and she needs to run, well we just might be able to make that happen. We’ve got a new shorthair pup who will be learning the ropes this year.
Hope we get a few of them mornings again this year
Same! Last couple years have been light on snow.
Great hunt! 👍
What county are you hunting?
County is a little too specific, but we hunt central region
@@MawheeOutdoors understand completely. I hunt North Central myself

I’ve been binge watching ur pheasant videos and I love your stuff man!
Awesome! Hope to bring some more great hunts this next season. Stick around!
Looks awesome. What part of Iowa are you hunting?
Thanks! We do all our hunting in the central region
Great video! Love your intro and outro. Wish I had your editing skills!
Huge compliments! I appreciate it
Birds zeros
Good hunt thanks for taking me along 😊
Glad you enjoyed!
Usually they show-up when one has some combination of coffee, sandwich, Hostess fruit pie or cigar in one’s mouth. Never fails.
I have sacrificed many half eaten honey-buns to the mud
Oh, Hi
Nice! That was a good day!
Awesome videos!
I did a lot of lone hunting and usually took my bull terrier who didn't know what he was doing but he was a pretty good retriever. Light snow and cold temperatures are a huge advantage. Most hunters use the same routine and the birds know their routine before they even get their guns loaded they're sneaking out the other way. I never entered a field from the same direction. I can drive down a gravel road and tell you where the birds were just by the vegetation. My favorite thing next to you know what.
Every hunt is a learning opportunity, and every property offers different challenges. One of the great things about the sport. Thanks for the comment!
What program do you to edit your videos?
Filmora, it was one of the only programs that I could get on my ancient MacBook when I started.
Seemed your right to left moving shots were the ones you had problems with. I have same issue as left handed shooter with left to right. Next 2 you shot were left to right and you 1 shot both of them.
Very true! Pulling the head away from the gun and missing behind. More practice on the skeet range this summer!
Have you patterned this shotgun/choke/load combo? Put it on paper & you may be surprised at what you see.
@@A14275 definitely something I need to do before next season. I shoot the same load all season, so I’ll try different chokes and see what I like best. Thanks for the advice!
Unreal hunt
lets start off this epic hunt with the classic"truck door slam", what do you say?
Always! Gotta give the birds a head start!
Did you make those drawers for your truck box? I would like to see how they work and how you made them if so. Thanks!
Yes, we have made 2 of them. If we build another, it will be recorded and put into a video. The drawers have smooth vinyl strips that slide on an epoxy surface. It’s cheaper than drawer kits on the market, but not as convenient, since the epoxy does wear and the drawers are heavy to pull especially when full.
Looks pretty cold to me…😂
That was a nice hunt.
Teddy is a hell of a good dog
Great action! Fun to watch. Teddy was sure busy & did a great job. How long did that take you guys? Were all those roosters wild?
Thanks! I would say it took 1.5-2 hours. Edited out the slow parts. Most of the birds were in just a couple spots. All wild birds where we hunt.
@@MawheeOutdoors I guess I can believe it or not, & it won't make a difference either way. I really have no choice but to take your word for it, as you'd know better than I in the areas you hunt. But man, never in my life have I seen even close to that many wild roosters, even the dumbest of the dumb, that've never been hunted before, cooperate even close to that well, in that short a period of time. 1st bird flushes right by the truck, flies 50 yds down the ditch, lands (while there's better, safer cover nearby), & stays right there, waiting to be flushed. 2nd bird plays stare down & practically has a conversation with hunter, while in plain view, before finally flushing. Then with all the commotion going on, all those other roosters just stay put, in light cover & minimal snow, waiting for hunters to get within shotgun range. Every last one of them. And with that many cripples, that much running room, & only 1 dog, you didn't lose any? Almost as though those birds hadn't spent every day of their lives avoiding death. All the while, you see only a hen or 2. Doesn't quite add up. But if they're wild, it was truly a once in a lifetime hunt. Or never in a lifetime, for me probably. In any case, wild or not, you got great footage & did a nice job putting it together. I enjoyed watching. Thanks for sharing.
@@lilbrowhydaw Just read your reply. Definitely 100% all wild birds! We never come across pen-raised birds in the places we hunt. This hunt was great, but it wasn't anything too spectacular compared to what we have seen in all our years of hunting. We've seen spots where we flush 50-100 wild birds at a time. The birds' behavior on this hunt was actually what we would expect. Pheasant prefer to run vs fly, and this property is mostly a winding creek. Birds won't run into the open crop fields, so they have no choice but to run up the creek until they get to a spot where they decide to hold tight. There's a nearby property of 160 acres of grass where most of these birds hatch (see our videos "Crafty Roosters" and "Rainy Day"). The roosters are pushed off by hunting pressure, but hens will stay. That's why there were so many roosters at this property (the same creek runs through both properties). However, I will say that most of our videos capture our best hunts. We have many hunts were we might only get 1 or 2 birds. Great opportunities are out there. Just have to keep hunting! Thanks for the comments!
That was fun to watch. I miss when bird hunting was that good or better where I'm from. Also, great dog you have there. Makes me more excited for what's to come with my boy.
Thanks! It’s not always this easy for us, but we have some good places that consistently hold birds. We’re down a dog this year, so looking forward to adding more dog power to our crew!
You guy's shot VS bird Rashel is horrible. I always used a single shot or maybe a double barrel and would go out hunting with no more than 6 shells on me and if I seen my limit. I would come home with it which was 2 Birds a day.
That’s impressive, good for you. We do shoot wild sometimes, but we often shoot well. We hunt in a group, so you have to shoot fast to beat everyone else to the bird!
Maybe it was an off day. It happens. I usually shoot my 3 man limit with 3 to 6 shells but there are days that I swear I can't hit the broad side of a barn.
The one guy is good at catching the wounded runners!
What is the daily limit?
3 per hunter
those are the best hunts, one, two, three roosters at a time, good dog work, working those water ways, a fun hunt.
Nice video. Loved the 2 rooster dilemma. Thankfully I see nobody shooting a worthless double.🙂
Very nice! Those tall weeds are just nasty to get through! But that's where the birds like to be. That one wounded bird that Teddy was trying to find was a perfect example of how thick those weeds are. In the video, you can clearly see the grass moving and leaving a trail that the wounded bird was taking. Did you finally just step on it to hold it down? That really showed how those birds can avoid danger and evade the hunter and the dog. There must have been so much scent that Teddy couldn't figure out where that rooster was!? And the vegetation was so thick that he couldn't visually see the bird. You could clearly see poor Teddy was a little frustrated!
We did finally step on it and grabbed it. Teddy is working overtime this year, since he’s now our only bird dog. He just didn’t have it in him to hunt for that bird, since he needed a break.
Private land rules!
Kestrel might be the most stunningly beautiful bird dog I've ever seen! I cried a lot when i said goodbye to my chocolate lab. Its so gut wrenching when they leave us.😢 Might I ask why kestrel passed so young? Only 8 years old.
He was a great dog, and we are missing him this season. He injured his spine while chasing something in the yard. We held on to the hope of recovery, but he didn’t improve. It’s great to have memories of him preserved in our videos.
I've never seen that many roosters in one place like that! I'm not sure how many hens that got up and were edited out, but I think I only saw 2 or 3 hens total! That was definitely the hunt of a lifetime! No way was Teddy going to give up getting both those birds in the water along the ditch bank. Did he have both birds in his mouth at the same time?
Your hunting partners diving retrieve on that wounded bird was hilarious! 😅 I had to go back and re-watch it a couple of times!
The video is true to what we saw. We were shocked at the number of roosters vs hens! There’s a 160 acre property nearby with lots of grass. I believe that’s where all the hens nest and most of them stay there. Teddy will try double retrieves, but he didn’t this time.
The water retrieve was edited shorter. He searched for a couple minutes and almost gave up searching but finally grabbed it!
Looks like a good time!!!
Nice video guys. Teddy had his work cut out for him!
Hardest worker of the group! He never disappoints
Great hunt
