Hello, and welcome to my TH-cam channel! My name is Michael and I'm a bassist living in Chicago. I focus on jazz but gig in the classical and top 40 scenes as well. I put this channel together so showcase some of my transcription work. As we head into the new year, and hopefully many of us musicians get back to gigging, I plan to upload some videos about the business side of being an artist as well as a self-employed freelancer. There will be videos about interacting with club owners, fellow musicians as well as tips on branding and persona finance. I hope you enjoy!
Check out my website at www.mikebenning.com for available transcriptions, videos, music, concert dates and more.

Yardbird Suite bass transcription: Learning to play like Red Mitchell
Playing along to a great bebop solo! Taken from the 1958 Hampton Hawes album: Four! It's rare that I post myself playing along to these tunes as I imagine most of you would rather here the original legendary bassists alongside my best interpretation of their solos. Alas, a customer reached out me hoping to find a video of a normie playing this partricular so, voilá, here we are.
check out my website at www.mikebenning.com/store for the full album transcription; I've got a handful more for sale there, many under $10! Learn to play like the masters with these super helpful PDFs

George Tucker bass solo transcription: On the Spur of the Moment
มุมมอง 4794 หลายเดือนก่อน
Taken from the 1961 Horace Parlan album under the same name, this album features the Turrentine brothers on tenor and trumpet with Parlans' classic rhythm section of George Tucker and Al Harewood on drums. Tucker is admittedly not my favorite soloist. His lines often seem disconnected and the space he uses rarely inspire a proceeding great musical idea. There are 3 bass solos on this 6 track al...

Doug Watkins Bass solo transcription: Mack the Knife (Moritat)
มุมมอง 2.3K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Taken from the 1956 Sonny Rollins album: Saxophone Colossus, this Kurt Weill composed song, famously sung by Bobby Darrin, features Watkins in fine form showcasing smooth eighth note lines with just the right amount of chromaticism for a tune that's completely diatonic. This is Watkins' only solo on the 5 song record, and although I wish he had taken another chorus, he gives the listener just e...

Just a few things I go over: Show up on time, look good (be fun!) be cool, understand the intangibles, and try to return the favor of hiring. It takes years of maturity and humility to be the type artist people want to work with. I take pride in being more than just a great bassist, but a great person too. ...

Taken from the 1964 Oscar Peterson Trio Album: We Get Requests, this track "You Look Good to Me" composed by Walter Donaldson / Seymour Lefco / Billy Rose / Clement Wells, features one of Ray's few solos on the record, but a great one at that. His use of slides, triplets, chromaticism and precise dexterity make for a fantastic bebop solo. check out my website at www.mikebenning.com/store for th...

Excellent work on an excellent solo!
One of my favorite bass players of all time!
Great work brother. Just wondering, how do you post these transcriptions without getting copyrighted? I also play bass and try to put out transcriptions on another channel but they are always copyrighted.
They almost always get copyrighted but that doesn't mean you can't post; just that the video can't be monetized. I've mostly used this channel to advertise my full album transcriptions anyway so it's no worries for me.
Nice one. I'd like to learn this one on my electric fretless (since I don't have access to a double bass), as a practice, how hard would it be?
hard to say. it's not the hardest solo I've transcribed. Depends on how much experience you have playing bebop lines already. Try listening enough times to sing along to it and it gets easier.
beautiful man
Yo, measures 73 and 75 are wrong. Should be C# D C#, not D Eb D. Also 117 those are definitely Bb!
Cool!
Killer Solo!
That was an amazing solo
gorgeous
Excellent work
Meditation / Meditação by Antonio Carlos Jobim
Bravo!!
Thank you!
Love Doug’s sound
Myself as well. Guys like him, PC and Pettiford are the reason I play on guts to this day
You cut it off on the most important part - bass line behind the Sonny's solo. 😥
That was a great video 👍 I actually thought I had clicked on something from Rich dad Poor dad lol until I saw the link to the transcription at the end. I enjoy watching your transcriptions too. Good job on the channel. Kudos
Much appreciated; any comparison to Robert Kiyosaki is a huge compliment!
One thing to watch out for is stipulations on the high apy. Some require you to have x amount before you get the higher rate. I have used sofi for couple years and they require you to have a direct deposit to the checking to qualify for the 4.60% which their checking also is at 0.5% and counts even if you have lower balance unlike some that have to have 5k or 25k to get the higher apy rate.
This is a great point and something I address is my upcoming video (coming Feb 5). I need to be more clear when illustrating pros and cons of high yielding accounts. Thanks for the tip!
参考になります。🙄
As a new professional player, it feels welcoming to see this attitude from an experienced musician. Came here from your transcription videos, thanks for your perspective

I feel better about starting on roots so much now :p But of course my ideas aren't as refined >.>
The bass is a root-oriented instrument. I never feel bad about starting on the root. Musicality above all
@@artistryworks I agree. Idk why I've felt I shouldn't start on the root during a solo
@@MingusDynastyy it's admittedly a more vanilla approach but not necessarily a boring one. Tension and resolution are pivotal elements of improvisation, hence roots achieve this greatly
I saw Butch Warren shortly before he died. He was amazing. I have never seen anyone play like him before. He was so thin from the cancer that it seemed at first that he wouldn't be able to lift the bass up, but once he had it upright, he made the bass seem as light as a feather. He became one with the bass. His fingers danced such a beautiful dance over the strings. It's sad that he has passed away, but I'm so happy to know that he got back to playing the bass again before he passed.
wow i love this soooo much you have noooo idea. I love the solo itself for how Jones uses the non chord tones, and how he just keeps the groove. I also just love the transition from the end of the bass solo back to the piano. You've done such a good job transcribing this, kudos to you :)
Much appreciated. Now that I listen back to it, that DbMaj7 line over D half-dim might be something I need to incorporate over my own playing
In treble clef?
Idk about you but I’d rather read treble clef than a bunch of ledger lines or an 8va marking
@@benning7bass talk for yourself lol
@@BourdeoixEterno I would also rather read treble clef
I never heard a Charlie Haden solo that sounded good
one of the best.
Ron Carter is creative and articulate on the bass.
+100,000 points to you sir for the Richard Davis (i'm an old student of his) and Butch Warren transcriptions. Not enough musicians have enough exposure to their sound. Both players have a massive understanding of the bass as both a harmonic and rhythmic instrument (as in the bass "Felt" or "heard" as a drum "polyrhythms/syncopations")
Very much appreciated; I'll take those points to the bank! I indeed try to walk Like Warren and my views on what the bass was capable of was increased immeasurably after checking the works of Davis.
this guy sounds pretty talented on the bass
Nah, just some random bass guy 😉🤣

Hi, I've really enjoyed your works on Richard Davis I requested, and this latest HardBop work as well! I'd love to see your new work soon;perhaps, on Ray Brown or Larry Gales you mentioned?
Glad to hear you've enjoyed. I'm currently working on a Sonny Rollins record with Doug Watkins on bass. Larry Gales is player I definitely haven't checked out enough so thanks for yet another great recommendation!
@@artistryworks Yeah, I've transcribed some of Larry Gales' solos and basslines myself, and he has definitely one of the most unique feel especially when playing with Thelonious Monk. And Thank you as always for your great works👍
@@artistryworks As I have just been studying on Davis' works for 4 months with your transcriptions, I'm starting to realize how hard it is to play with such articulation, accuracy and etc, and even transcribing on the sheet. My life got a lot better thanks to your transcriptions, and I truly really appreciate your efforts on all of them.
@@cotehall9434 I appreciate your kind words and glad to have been a help. I've been admittedly slower with getting more transcriptions out as the Chicago scene has recovered quite well and I've been spending less time at my computer. I haven't forgotten about the Larry Gales request and I really want to dig into his playing more!
I agree Mr. McBride. Tell me more!
Yeah Mike ! , Love Butch Warren and such a happy tune.
Happy tune is a great descriptor; glad you like it!

Thank you so much for responding to my request!! I can see you putting a lot of effort into it and will definitely buy the transcriptions as soon as it's available. Cheers, your transcriptions are always helpful.
Happy to oblige. This one is certainly a beast and taking longer than I expected. Not having drums makes it really hard to place the beat at times. I hope to have the full album completed before the end of the month.
So it took much longer than expected but this full album transcription is now available on my website www.mikebenning.com/store Thanks again for the request!
@@artistryworks I've just confirmed and purchased the transcription! I'm gonna get myself completely absorbed in Richard Davis's beautiful playings with your transcription for a while. Thank you again, Mike!
@@cotehall9434 Thank you again for the request. Some of these tracks feature other worldly talent from Davis! This is an album all classical and jazz bassists should check out. Thanks for being a customer; now I'm on to the next one! - though I haven't decided which one yet :)
very cool, well done

Hi, I'd like to buy some of your transcriptions from your website. and I just wanna make sure that the purchased transcriptions will be sent as electronic files to a registered e-mail. Is that correct? thx.

Artistry Works Thanks you for your reply. I've just purchased them. Keep up the great work!!
@@cotehall9434 Thanks so much, happy practicing!
benning7bass I'm really having fun with your transcriptions already! and I'd be so greatful if you had a plan for transcribing Richard Davis' "The Bassist -Homage to Diversity-"(2000) someday. I'm no good at transcribing bass bowing tunes, but I really love the beautiful bowing pieces in the album like "Little Benny" and "Simone" And thank you again for your great works! Cheers!!
@@cotehall9434 Great recommendation! I too am a big fan of arco solos and certainly agree they are not easy to transcribe. I have plans to do Richard Davis on the Kenny Burrell album: A night at the Vanguard (1959). I will certainly listen to "Homage to Diversity" though and see if I can complete that album as well.
Strayhorn, great composer and sidekick.
Because I'm a perfectionist, in this song, very end of the solo, measure 196 beat & of 4, the notes should be Bb F Bb. You'll hear the contour of the line and know what I mean when you listen to it.
