On a regular spearfishing day, I speared a lionfish, which, as many know, has venomous spines. Thinking it was lifeless, I started to carefully cut away the spines, but out of nowhere, the lionfish jolted, and one of its spines punctured my finger right under the nail. Immediately, the venom shot pain through my left hand, spreading numbness up to my shoulder. The pain was intense-like nothing I’d felt before.
I quickly gathered my gear and made my way back to the shore, unsure how my body would react. After about an hour, the pain eased, and I could move my hand again. Feeling a bit better, I decided to head back and continue the dive.
