Stone-on-stone contact and stiff and/or modified binders, the desired stability can be obtained. Binder course consists of aggregates having low asphalt and doesn’t require high quality as the surface course, hence replacing some part of the surface course with the binder course is a more economical design. It is designed to withstand the shear stresses that occur about 50-70mm below the asphalt surface.
5) Asphalt surface course (25-50mm)
The surface course is at the top of the pavement. The purpose of the surface course, also known as a wearing course, is to give a smooth riding surface, withstand high traffic and environmentally-induced stresses without exhibiting unsatisfactory cracking and rutting. The surface course also provides a water-tight barrier against the infiltration of surface water. The surface course usually consists of bituminous surfacing.
