A DIY Whole House Water Filtration System Using Pentek Big Blue and GE #homeimprovement #waterfilter
It’s not DIY, but I have an alarm system which I have had for seven years. It still works.
I have mine setup on HomeKit and in the aqura app. I thought I saw you could also set this up to get notifications on Google home? Have you tried? My ecosystem is a mix, would be nice if it displayed on all. Thanks for the videos, they helped me pull the trigger.
Thanks. Like you mine are set up with HomeKit and the Aqara app. I also use Google and Alexa, so I’m pretty much a mix of everything. The Aqara devices do naturally show up in Google Home app but honestly I’ve never found that as useful as using HomeKit.
Let me know what your experience with DIY alarm systems has been, especially the "smart" variety that you can access with your phone. Are you happy with the cost and value of the system for your home?
G'day from Australia Colby. This is good advice, not just for the Aqara G4, but also for pretty much all other "smart" devices. A good reset every now and then is always a good thing. FYI... I commented on one of your other video's about the lag you've been experiencing that may help anyone having similar problems. I wont go into it in full here again (See Colby's other video) but in short, do one of two things. Preferably both.... 1) Buy a dedicated doorbell power supply (Wired Input External Power: 12V-24V AC 0.2A 50/60Hz or 8V-24V DC 0.5A). I found the G4 goes into a semi sleep mode to conserve batteries and takes a while to wake up again when detecting a person, or someone pushes the button. But on mains power it's pretty much instant, as it wont go to sleep. 2) Change your modem/router settings to split the Wi-fi mode from "band steering" to separate 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels. That way the modem/router wont keep being "smart" and change things your Aqara and other devices don't like being changed. Oh, and adjust the "loiter" setting for the G4 in the Aqara app. Hope that helps guys.
I’m a bit late to this video but, I have an Aqara G4 which I initially set up using the Aqara app (as recommended) before having Apple HomeKit find it. Mine works great, however, I found a slight lag (a lot less than this video shows) running on batteries. I discovered when running on batteries only, the G4 goes into a semi sleep mode to conserve the batteries which means it takes a short time to wake up, begin recording and sending alerts. So I purchased a 24v power supply specifically made for door bells and found the G4’s responsiveness is now pretty much instant. Hope that helps anyone with a G4 or someone considering getting one.
Thanks for sharing the tip.
Im on a 512 GB iphone 16 pro max came from the 256 gb but i upgraded mine even though i dont use much storage on the 256 gb but i am glad i upgraded my iphone 15 pro 256 gb for the 512 gb storage i was going to go for the 1TB but i thought i wouldnt be needing much of that storage unless im doing photos and videos which i dont rely my iphone as a storage place i send them all to my macbook after and its still goes through my usb c flash drive 1 tb by sandisk 😅👍👍
Even if you don’t end up needing the storage, that 512 will be a better resale value. 👍
@ oh thank you for the advice thats good to know 😊👍
Thanks
Considering value for real life, I’m in on a device like this to give us peace of mind. What about you?
In my own experience, the sensors are past the 3 year point. I have replaced batteries as necessary and there has been no problem continuing to use the sensor once a new battery has been installed.

Hello... i am thinking to get me a set but the only thing that is holding me back is the door and windows sensors although after 3 years of battery life will not reconnect so you will have to order new ones... i had this same problem with other brands as well. the solution seems kind of easy for such a small device without the extra cost to buy new ones every 3 years and my thoughts think if you can keep the power on these doors and windows devices and THEN you switch the battery's they will stay connected and that means less electric waste... would be nice to have a USB C connector you can put in the Device so you can switch to your new battery's or make it your self be for installing :D or they can make a double battery pack and as one is down to switch for new battery's you can get the empty ones out and the power stay's on and put in the new ones so you can make them last for a looooong time... or you can wire them on the net so they will have power without battery's incl... the simplest way is double battery so as one is down to empty you have the time to switch in the new ones without the sensors going offline and not reconnecting and you are forced to buy some or maybe allot of new ones. i dunno man i'm just a want to fix it kind of guy so everyone has a more pleasant experience with the products we buy witch makes this Ring brand even ahead of that Curve :D oww come on man we send space ships to space and catch them when they fall back now ! can we at least have a simple device as a sensor running when you switch the battery's with a double battery system and when it's time to switch you get a notification in the app and you can easily like uhhh do that without having to buy 10 / 20 new ones i like the Ring products and features... just wish they would have solved this battery's switch and not reconnecting thing already for god sake ! what if we were on Mars and your space ship battery is dead and we need to reconnect we just order a new space ship from earth xD i know they need to make profit but people already pay for the connection service to keep things crispy in order and to me it is just a waste and you do not only your own pocket a favor but also the better for the environment kind of Ring thing. P.S maybe a small Solar Panel you can putt on your window with window suction cups and the battery's just keep going My Best Regards,
Add a spim down filter first in line
I've seen those. Would that reduce the amount of particles moving on to the next filters?
@volcolby catches the bigger stuff with a 50-40 micron filter. Makes a difference
Can you listen to music or use Google maps? That's what I'm trying to figure out.
Yes. I haven't figure out every "yes" and "no", but as long as your phone is docked, there seems to be the ability to adjust maps or music. My problems run into my children handling my phone to play music. As I think I mention, you can "reclassify" a trip and say that a passenger used your phone (on the honor system) but it is a bit of a pain if that is happening a lot.
I like to save money. If I can fix it without calling a technician, I will try. How about you? Have you had easy an inexpensive fixes for your gas logs that keep them running smoothly?
Wow this is awesome. Makes me want to get into birdwatching
I'm not a true birdwatcher myself, but if it's genetic, then I'm well on my way.
Don't think I'll be wasting my dollar on one of those. I have numerous low-effort cleaning tools, techniques, and materials, most of which do at least as good a job as that Mosche.
I get it. Lots of cleaning products out there. I'm not saying this one is the answer to everything, but I do see it making certain areas easier to take care of. Thanks for watching.
I got mine at harbor freight work great love it
These cleaners certainly have a niche of doing things that other tools don't do. We need to try ours on more things in the house. Thanks for watching.
My aqara doorbell worked great on battery but drain fast. Now I connected it to power and it works for a couple weeks and then stops connecting. I flip my circuit breaker and it starts working again. Is there a way to make the doorbell restart on its own maybe once a day?
I'm not aware. It sounds a bit like the power source for your doorbell is not enough voltage. I'm certainly not an electrician, but since I live in an older house I was concerned when I first tried a smart doorbell camera that my existing wiring wouldn't support the power needs. It might be something to look into.
Hi there. By "stops connecting" do you mean stops talking to the indoor chime/recorder component? Or stops talking to your network and therefore phones for alerts etc? If it's the latter (network) I suggest going into your modem/router and splitting the Wi-Fi onto their separate 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels. A lot of modems/routers these days are designed and marketed as "smart" for their supposed ease of use for the everyday user which is referred to as "Band steering". It's a Wi-Fi "feature" (cough) that automatically connects devices to the best available frequency band in your home (Uhuh!). Nope, they aren't that "smart" because the modem/router will often move things around at will which causes all kinds of grief to anything that prefers a constant connection such as.... 2.4Ghz doorbells and most smart led lighting devices etc. The Aqara G4, like most other smart lighting and home security devices need to run on 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi. The G4 doesn't support 5Ghz. I was having all kinds of disconnection issues in late October 2023 when we were forced to change ISP and was provided a new "smart" modem/router. Luckily I knew what the problem was and immediately changed the setting to split the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz into their separate channels, reconfigured all my Wi-fi devices to the Ghz they preferred (2.4Ghz) and have had minimal to zero problems since. In the past year I have had only one problem with the G4 and that was only a few days ago, thus why I stumbled across this video of Colby's. My G4 suddenly started sending constant alerts on a 2-5 minute timeframe saying "offline" then a minute or so later another saying "online". This went on for an hour before I spat the dummy, went into the kitchen where the doorbell repeater/recorder section lives, pulled the power from it for a few minutes before putting back on power. Within a minute it sorted itself out and has been running great again ever since. Let me know how you go if you try any of the above. Regards Paul
@@2009captainpaul thanks. Sounds like an approach to give a try. I use Google routers that seem to make connecting 2.4 devices easier than other routers I’ve had before. I’m not sure that the Google routers allow a lot of user adjustments though, but there may be a way. Thanks for the input.
If i am not to remember wrong, it is actually inside the disc, which is actually a round chamber where the magic happens. A infrared light is emitted. Some mirrors inside are picking it up and reflecting it around. In the other side there is a receiver. When dust is detected inside the "chamber" the intensity of the light is weaker/interrupted by smoke or in your case dust particles, thus sounding the alarm. Sometimes sun rays can also disturb the signal, and cause a false alarm.
After tearing apart the inner assembly, (not on the video), your explanation makes sense. It is an empty cavity with air flow openings and then what could be a tiny laser light (hard to tell with the naked eye.)
This worked perfectly for me for the E:15 error. Thank you Colby Willen. While you see water on the left I believe it pools in a tray at the bottom of the dishwasher with a sensor whose job is to detect water leaks and stop the machine before it leaks. As with you, cutting boards on the left hand side seem to be the root cause.
I would love to hear what your favorite portable power source is. Since value is important to most of us, how much money are you willing to spend to have a reliable battery bank for your laptop or power hungry phone.
I would really like to hear from others who have used Drive Safe & Save - have you had similar issues? Any real solutions?
So the fix is simply delete and re-pair?
I could be wrong, but I imagine it is something of a cache clearing. The reconnect option seems to help. It is similar, it seems, to what the Apple Store told me about my iPhone bluetooth problems: essentially, just unpair and re-connect everything.
Thanks for doing this 👍
Thanks for watching.
I have purchased both google and the Aqara door. I want the Aqara door bell but it looks is sooooo ugly, but the function with HomeKit, nothing else compares.
I have purchased both google and the Aqara door. I want the Aqara door bell but it looks is sooooo ugly, but the function with HomeKit, nothing else compares.
Let me know if you've tried this Ring doorbell. Are you satisfied with the basic features and the price, or do you need the more expensive models with their bells and whistles?
Great video. One of my window sensors stopped talking to my base station even though the battery levels seemed to be 50% through the app. I just reset the sensor and its working again.
Good to hear. What I would like to discover is what makes sensors stop connecting. Sometimes it is obvious, like a battery or a sensor getting knocked loose. Other times, it seems to happen for no apparent reason. I will say, I have a lot of sensors connected for about 3 years now, and I've had very, very few issues.
@@volcolby Yeah. I initially was using a motion sensor in my garage when I first set up my Ring system. The sensor worked fine for about the first four months. Then it would start triggering my alarm in the middle of the night which obviously scared me about someone being in my garage. I reset it a couple times and it worked again for about a month. Then it started doing the same. I finally gave up on it and I don't use it. Nothing worse than having your alarm going off in the middle of the night on false alarms.
My phone is doing this shit On 0.5 to 1X
my phone does not switch to x0.5 while recording a video
I never needed more than 128 on any phone. I don’t carry music saved. I don’t download movies or shows from apps to watch offline. The pictures I take I transfer them to my computer every few weeks. I don’t really download useless apps, just ones I actually use and need. The lowest my storage ever goes is to around 60gb
Let me know if you've had problems with your video doorbell, especially being slow. If you've found a fix, or tried my fix, tell me about it. Thanks.
That's the apple play. They increased sensor pixels, but size is the same. So iphone 16 is gonna take same or worse photos but they will be 4 times the size. So you either gonna have to buy a bigger storage for your next iphone, or cough up more cash for icloud in perpetuity. It's all by design.
And hard to get out of!
you really dont know what you're talking about lol
Your data on your phone/tablet needs to be backed up anyway. I have 128 GB on both my iPad Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. I have paid for iCloud.
I currently pay for iCloud too. I would like to pay less, so I’m working on other options but the process is slow developing.
@@volcolby On my PC, I back everything up on my HDDs, but I also have Microsoft’s version of icloud… forget the name.
@@mikaelbiilmann6826 What if yourcomputer gets a virus don't you lose everything on there.. well if it shuts down your whole computer?
@@BellaMorena555 Hence, why I have iCloud. Easy to reset a computer.
How about you - would you rather pay for more storage on your phone or pay for storage other ways?
Is the Smart Air Quality Monitor any good?
Never mind, I see you have a video on it.
I know this is an older video, but I just came across your channel today. have three Cync smart bulbs, including an old-fashioned style. They work well, but their colors don't match other manufacturers such as Tapo. So I use all three in my home office.
I do think one of the problems we all face is how quickly things change and all the variation in devices/bulbs etc. I have several smart home things I was using a couple of years ago that are sitting unused now.
I have tiles and love them

For when you replace a drive, you do not need the screws for a 3.5in drive, thats what the clips are for that snap off the edges. The screws are for a 2,5in SSD. Just an FYI.
The box included two different sets of screws, one labeled for 3.5 and the other for 2.5. That’s all I know.
