Explore the mesmerizing figurative and cloud sculptures of artist Karen LaMonte. Through sculptures of dresses and kimonos inhabited by absent female bodies, LaMonte's highly charged works embody a challenge to historic conceptions of the female nude and explore explore ideas of beauty and culture, presence and absence, being and not being.
LaMonte's cloud sculptures are meditations on climate, environment, weather and weightlessness, rendered in marble, iron and glass.
From her glass, ceramic, bronze, and rusted iron-draped female figures to timely explorations in climatology and biomimetics, LaMonte's work investigates female identity, music, art history, and science, placing her alongside other contemporary sculptors who have adopted the human body as a vehicle for expressing the human condition.

Theatre de la Mode: A sublime exhibit exploring art and fashion — Karen LaMonte at the Barry Museum
In 2013, artist Karen LaMonte made a pilgrimage to the Maryhill Museum of Art to visit Théâtre de la Mode. In this exhibition, The Barry Museum of Art celebrates the artist’s pilgrimage by positioning a selection of her Nocturnes and Études in theatrical sets inspired directly by the 1945 sensation.
The original 27-inch figurines, handmade by leading sculptors and fashion designers including Rochas, Nina Ricci, Sciaparelli and-most notably to LaMonte-Madame Grès, represent a conviction that art is a cultural necessity, and could save the war torn French economy. The 237 figurines and accompanying sets toured European cities in 1945, and the United States the following year.
These nearly hundred-year-old works inspired LaMonte’s Études.

Nocturnes: sculptures by Karen LaMonte
มุมมอง 2.5K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Nocturnes: Karen LaMonte’s figures are at once intensely physical - muscles and flesh strain against clinging fabric - and yet insubstantial: the figures are absent, implied only by the shapes pressing against the clothing. The technical brilliance of casting these figures in iron, bronze and glass is disguised by the lightness and fluidity of each figure’s movement: reclining, twisting, steppi...

Thank you so very much!!!!
I got goosebumps hearing about the goosebumps! So much realism put in to creating the ethereal beauty of these sculptures.
We just saw some of these, and learned about you, today at the Peters Gallery in Santa Fe. Magnificent! :We will go to the St. Petersburg exhibit in November :)

Amazing video and presentation.
Nice share. You desperately need P R O M O S M!!
Hi Karen... I love these, just gorgeous and very special... I too love clouds, I think all sculptors and painters do and it would be a tragedy to loose these as well as so many other things through human carelessness and greed. I hope to see you in Prague soon xx
God forbid that she tells us about her methods and process. Stone carvers want to know
This is just incredibly amazing. Pretty impressive sculpture! Going to use it as an inspiration for future artwork of mine
Wow! Just wow! - I will be watching this many times.
Since we acquire your work Chado 2010 at the OKCMOA had always fascinates me your incredible work, but after seeing this video....WOW! You are an remarkable artist. Thank you
Thank you so much! I am so thrilled to be included in the museums collection.
Thank you for this I was very curious about the process of making one of the dresses. Beautiful works! Love the back and forth between positive and negative, like a dance with space.
A wonderful and wonder-filled presentation of Karen's incredible work. What a change - seeing the fruits of her 7 years of experimentation and education, the dedication it had to require! What an inspiration for any and all who follow their own artistic paths.
Thanks Gerry!!!!!!
They look absolutely incredible! I can't wait to see them up close at the museum in October!
Hi Mitch, I watched your ENCORE Showcase 2016 video. Very cool. Thanks, Karen
Ms. La Monte - this is a remarkable presentation. I was woefully unaware of any of your "other" work, than the glass dresses. Thank you for opening up so much of your artistic world to me. You also share such personal insights, as to cause me at times to feel uncomfortable, as if I were inadvertently listening in on someone else's confessions. Yet that brought so much more texture and dimension to the presentation, and I'd be hard pressed to enjoy it as much as I have, without those insights. Thank you for your candor.
Thank you Gerry!
I am speechless! Beautiful works!
Absolutely fantastic!
