KNOWN UNTO GOD
Available on DVD at www.schindler.com.au
Z Special Unit secret mission Operation RAVEN. The families of those lost on this mission thought the final resting place of the brave men lost on this mission would never be found. Of course the opinion of the film crew was no different. It seemed as if the whereabouts of their remains and the mystery of their loss would never be known. The documentary was being produced as a tribute to those men. Half way through the documentary something happened that would shock both the families and the film crew.

Can anyone tell me please why it was named Montevideo Maru? Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay and I’m just curious as to how it had that name.

It was one of the ships utilised by the Japanese to take Japanese migrants to South America. It was a passenger/cargo ship and the first diesel powered passenger ship in Japan's maritime history. Montevideo was one of the ports at which migrants disembarked. Google the names of other Japanese migrant ships and you'll find Buenos Aires Maru and others. Some of them were true luxury liners pre war and you'll observe that in THE TRAGEDY OF THE MONTEVIDEO MARU we visit one ship that survived. We filmed in the cabin once utilised by the rich and famous including Charlie Chaplin. These forme rluxury luxury liners were to eventually be named "hell ships' by their reluctant passengers - allied prisoners. A lot of prisoners lost their lives on the Montevideo Maru including men from Number One Independant Company, the 2/22nd Battalion, Norwegian sailors from the Herstein, civilian men and boys from Rabaul and others.

My father was a member of Z - working the back-end onshore. Initially promoted to Captain in artillery, then seconded across to Z intel as the unit was being formed. His service covered Malaya, Singapore and the Philippines, along with Z training on Fraser Island and in Canungra in Queensland. A lot of great stories, and a few group holiday trips around Pittwater in the late 1960s. Despite my being quite young, I have great memories of meeting a few of the Jaywick crew on those dat trips. (I loved those!) Thanks.
