มุมมอง 347ปีที่แล้ว
We need to raise £6,000 for our upcoming recording of Pepusch's sacred music composed for James Brydges, the Duke of Chandos, around 1719/1720. The recording will be released on the Accent label and features a stellar cast of solo singers: Ciara Hendrick (soprano), Alex Potter, Hugh Cutting (altos), Nicholas Mulroy, Nicholas Todd (tenors), Vitali Rozynko and Edward Grint (basses). We are also e...

My third instalment in a nondescript series of 'you too can learn to play an XTC song'. I've meant to do more, but time, the weather, and all that got in the way. Yacht Dance coming soon! One day I'll figure out how to make those snazzy videos where I play all the parts (fretless bass is at the ready!). In the meantime, grab your guitar and join in.

Over the past few years we've collected some clips of radio announcers from around the world explaining and translating the name of our ensemble. For fun, we've also added a few snapshots from concerts, recordings, radio broadcasts… and some things in between!

XTC just keep on giving! ❤️
Very cool.
Brilliant stuff mate
Bravo!!! Now Do Desert Island :)
Good idea! I have a pile of XTC songs ready to go… just need some time to make the videos!
Well you’ve answered all the questions I’ve been carrying in my head for years. Thank you.
Beautiful Epiphone 😍
Outstanding job, I’ve been waiting years for someone to figure this out accurately. Just thought I’d check back after the tune came up on my shuffle playlist. Can’t wait to get home and get this down. You’re a star👍👍
Love this but would you mind telling me about that beautiful guitar? Epiphone doesn't seem yo make that model anymore.
It was a lockdown purchase from me to me, for my birthday. I really wanted a large acoustic arch top, but bought this one without first playing it (!). It is an Epiphone Masterbuilt Zenith, it's not as big as I first wanted, but having played it for a couple of years, I really like it. It has a wonderful neck. You'll have to hunt for one on Ebay (there is one now, for £600).
Brilliant, mate!! Very straight forward and to the point! Thanks ☺️
My god that guitar is beautiful. Great tutorial, although I've always played that opening lick as a G fretted with the B/E strings on the 3rd fret instead of the Dsus4. No idea if it's correct, but it sounds right to my ear and it's slightly easier to play.
I think that's legit. I played it like that for years, but like this I (being lazy) can avoid the shifting for the next bit that has to be in first position. Thanks!
I used to play this years ago with a great old friend of mine on the rare occasion I picked up a guitar. I’m generally a drummer so made the rhythm easy to get I think. Nice to see it broken down. Great tune.

You're a good person.
Jesus fuckin' christ..who does this?...you're a good person
Tbis is just good. Thank you - having found this tutorial and the brilliant one you did for Love on a Farmboys Wages has made my week! You're a star! ❤
Thank you! Time permitting, I would do more of them.
Wow, thanks for this video. It's just fantastic. I've been trying to understand this song for years! 😊
You talk too much ,it is boring.
It's called explaining

Thanks for this. You fill in the gaps I was missing and helped with voicings. It's always a challenge to separate the guitars on their recordings...which is what makes their music so engaging.
Thanks. TH-cam can be handy for things like that. There are plenty of songs for which there just a few bars niggling and then you those and then: 'oh, aha! that's what it is!'. I hope to make more when I can find the time.
For XTC, I usually make separate files in Logic (etc.) where I pan each channel hard left or right, then make a new mono mix. Then I go through, bar by bar, trying to figure it out. As you say, that's why they are so interesting!
Brilliant job
i love your XTC tutorials, maybe the best here, i hope you will go on with this xtx tutorials
Will do, trick is finding the time. I have many ready to go!
Andy’s brother, Robert. Nice!
yacht dance is a tricky one its on there chalkhills tab site well done with this one.
Dude, absolutely brilliant and you seem like a top chap, too. Wish I lived in Kent so I could take lessons. Well done!
Aha! This is also a project song for me, this helps heaps thanks!

Thanks for the video. Looking forward to Yacht Dance. Any plans to do Sgt. Rock?
I just need new strings on my classical to get Yacht Dance up and running. I've never tried Sgt Rock-I do like a challenge though!
Thank you!!! That blasted beautiful middle section has now been sorted thanks to you!!
Awesome, brilliant song from a great album 🎸
well done. I love this song and always wanted to know how to play it correctly. Shows the full dimensions of the musical and lyrical genius of XTC.
Thanks! What I often find in their songs is once I really learn them, they are full of amazing little puzzles and ideas that link the various parts of the songs. As ever with these guys, it's a masterclass in song-craft and arranging.
Ye olde interwebs are powered by crude... It makes sense to me only
This song is my mission for the year. Along with several others. Don't know how much time i or any of us have so im going out doing something cool. Also, it great to see the comments where the scale mode is in question, i learn from those too. And, im proud to be subscriber # 45
I think of the Major Seventh interval and chord as being sort of a "cousin" of the Locrian mode - the mode which is most frequently described as "unstable" or even "wrong" sounding. Before you write me off as totally insane, consider the fact that the Locrian scale begins on the note one half-step below the tonic. There is something inherently unstable about the major seventh chord, but the shorter the measure in relation to the rest of the chord progression, the less noticeable it is. When the chord is lingered on and sustained out, and especially if the vocal also draws out the seventh, it does sound somewhat "weird", as you describe it. What sounds even weirder is when the seventh is placed at the bottom rather than at the top of the inversion, i.e. the seventh degree is played by the lowest string of the guitar. Weirder still is to delegate the seventh to the bassist and have the guitarist simply play a major chord. If you're playing an E major chord and I'm blasting out a low D# (say, if I've detuned the E string a half step) it's technically a major seventh chord, but it will sound extremely unsettling.
A really interesting way to think about it. I think I'm probably guilty of trying to make major/minor (key) sense of music with a different harmonic concept.
i don't even play the guitar but this is fun to watch - thanks!
brilliant! thanks you
You lost me after 'EASY' mate fantastic stuff
May I make a require, please? I have been for many years so confused about the intro of One of a Million...If you know some about that one, would you please play it for us? Thanks for this, Robert. Your working here its a totally Rossete Stone, due that XTC songs are what they are..uf!!!
Ooh! I do like a challenge. In that case, I think I'll need to learn the bass part too. Watch this space!
@@Svatopluk I`ll keep on watching, thats for sure. Thank you son much.
And the Oscar goes to Robert!!!!!
Brilliant! I happened to be listening to the live version this morning and thought " i need to learn to play this." Thank you for sharing!
Thank you. I'm hoping to make some more of these… as soon as I find the time!
Wow! :-)
Brilliant ! Thanks so much, ace tune.
Easy right? Nooo....
Bravo! I’ve been torturing myself over the middle section of this tune for years - I’d figured out some of it and you’ve now filled in the remainder (and validated the rest). Many thanks!
Thanks Dave! I was in the same boat for years. Lockdown forced my hand, as it were. Hopefully I’ll upload a few other XTC tunes before too long.
Hey Dave! Just found this and see you beat me to it. Fantastic tutorial and thanks!
Thank you - please do more XTC
