Jack, very informative video. I like watching your presentations and the old photos that you source. This disaster was so terrible I wonder how people survived after this - especially the young girl raising her siblings when there was no welfare state. To think so many years later, corners were still being cut when Aberfan happened. The miners and their families were so useful to those wanting to make a profit. It makes me so angry really to think of how they were discarded by Thatcher and her mob in the 1980s. I’ve found a copy of How Green was my Valley TV series on YT recently uploaded. I loved that program as a child and am rewatching it now - about a mining village and one of the great things is many of the actors were Welsh so authentic accents. You might like to watch it too. Certain parts of the script have stayed with me all my life - especially the way Hugh as a boy pronounced ‘misled’. He’d be about my age now lol!

What happened to the greyhound track around the pitch? We, Merthyr County Grammar school used to play all of our rugby games on that pitch, midweek and Saturday mornings, which unfortunately often left it in a mess for the soccer games. First time I've seen the ground since about 1958. Thank you for the video.

Absolutely brilliant, spooky and atmospheric.

As Boy Scouts in ~1970, we went on an orienteering hike. Part of our task was to go to Senghenydd and speak to people who knew about the disaster. We stopped numerous elderly people who spoke at length. We were spell bound and carefully recorded what was said. Everyone was willing to speak to us. It was a wonderful way to educate young people about the disaster and allow older people to share their experiences.

It's Morlais (pronounced MOR-LISE) not Moralis (how annoying 😢)

When I was a boy living with my Welsh parents in London my father told me how his father, Archibald Dean, barely escaped death in a horrible disaster in a mine near 😅 when several hundred men were killed. Archibald was rescued, my father said, in a final attempt to bring out any survivors, after spending an endless time in the pit. Archie never recovered from his ordeal and was known afterwards to be a heavy drinker and bully who terrorized his family. He was basically shunned for his trauma symptoms and spent his last days being marginalized by a society that had yet to recognize and learn to identify and treat traumatic stress symptoms. It’s so ironic that I’m an 85 year old Viet Nam veteran retired with 45 years of clinical experience in Americas clinics and military hospitals. I hope one day to meet Archie and tell him that I understand. Those men were tough as nails.

great vid mate, i used to walk past there monday, wednesday and friday back in the 80s. bus from bridgend off at gwenllian terrace, down the public footpath in rhydyfelin to visit nan and gransh, then walk home to glyncoch. many thanks for sharing.

Hi mate , Just been watching your video of Brynwell Farm in Leckwith. I'm a Barry boy but live in Finland, found your video when I looked for some family history in Leckwith. The farm was owned by my great grandfather and then they used the Welsh spelling Brynwyl . My grandfathers name William John Morgan and he is buried in a small chapel in Bonvilston on the A48. He and his wife are buried there . Their funerals included a service at Leckwith village church , then by horse and trap to Zoar Baptist in Bonvilston. They had five children , three girls and two boys , none of them were interested in running the farm. One of the boys, wilf, went to the U.S.A. my grandfather went to work on building Barry Docks, when the docks opened he worked as a coal trimmer there. He married a girl from Nantgarw her name was Minnie Castle. One of the sisters bought the small white cottage at the bottom of Leckwith Hill and lived there for the rest of her life. The other two sisters married and lived in Whitchurch the other in Grangetown. I have a photo of the family I'll try to dig it out and send it to you. I only went to the farm once , back in about 1999/2000, there were two crazy brothers that owned the place , the neighbours told us not to go in as they usually try shooting trespassers. Just thought you might like this little bit of family history to go with your video. Best regards Paul Morgan

thank you loads for sharing!! my grandparents me in senghenydd and both had loads of stories about the place. the old building opp caerphilly self storage, was their first home . (just 1 room ) i am so glad people recognise the amount of history places hold.

29 Hanbury Street is today the carpark for the Old Truman Brewery. So I'm not exactly sure where it is you have filmed. The brewery covers the entire north side block and outside is where they have the Sunday market. The buildings directly across the road on the south side are the originals from the 19th century and pretty much look the same as what number 29 did before it was demolished. Btw did you know that actor/comedian/vaudeville entertainer Bud Flanagan was born at number 29 Hanbury Street in 1896 just eight years after the murder? Also (and just trying to be helpful) the site of the Polly Nichols murder was a bit further along near that blue wooden board/fence about a hundred yards from Blackwall Buildings (the tall building with the white window frames). Poor Polly was found lying on the ground outside what is now the entrance to the Elizabeth Line exit of Whitechapel Station, but back in 1888 it was a gated stable entrance in Buck's Row. If you imagine walking out of the exit to the station and looking down on the ground Nichols was lying slightly to your right. I enjoyed your video regardless. Please keep up the good work..
