Welcome to the official TH-cam channel for the AIWG funded research project: ‘Beauty and Islamic Theology’.
What is the nature and significance of beauty in Islamic intellectual thought and theology? To what extent did theological, philosophical, and mystical ideas inform the production and reception of Islamic material culture? Which approaches can be adopted in order to bridge the gap between theory and art?
This interview and documentary series concludes the one-year AIWG project workshop "Beauty and Islamic Theology", a joint research program of the Centre for Islamic Theology at the Eberhard-Karls-University Tübingen and the Chair of Islamic Religious Studies at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg.

Living Traditions: Episode Three - The Art of Islamic Bookbinding
Episode Three: The Art of Islamic Bookbinding, with Master Bookbinder Osman Doruk
This documentary series explores the lives, work, and reflections of three exceptional craftsmen and women based in Istanbul, Turkey: a calligrapher, an illuminator, and a bookbinder. Operating at the pinnacle of their respective professions, these films follow their journey through Islamic art, and shine a light on the value of traditional art and the ethics that support it. These films explore the inextricable links between religion and art, and how each craft is a product of, and opens a window into Islamic theology, culture, and history.
In this episode, we speak to master bookbinder Osman Doruk and explore the depth of knowledge, dedication, and skill required to become a bookbinder. Viewers can watch as Doruk works on a leather book cover while listening to descriptions of his apprenticeship, reflections on tradition and innovation, and the role of bookbinding in an age of print.

Thank you Dr. Nasr once again for the light you keep casting on question of Beauty and arts. Conterporary artists have been competing in arts and are trained so in Academies, where beauty is swept under the carpet. It is time to revive it and put aside the inferiority complex as You explained.
