On Friday, September 27, 2024 Hurricane Helene ripped through Southern Appalachia flattening forests and dropping what seems like half the Ocean down the Valleys stripping houses and businesses from their foundations and into the roaring flood waters.
At Noon, as the eye of the stormed passed over our home, the high winds fell a huge maple tree on the house crushing the roof and slicing off an outside wall as it chopped through our teenager’s bedroom. We had just 5 minutes before asked him to join us in the center of house knowing that if the tree did fall where it would land.
The property is in Greeneville, Tennessee along the Nolichuckey River a couple miles downstream from the Kinser Bridge that collapsed around 6 pm making National Headlines and Viral Clips.
Because of the tree we had left our place by 5 pm unaware that an hour later the surge from the collapse would engulf the house and barn washing them with all of our belongings down the river.
I returned to the property around 8pm, as the sun set, to find the raging Nolichuckey where the house stood only hours before.
This video is the first of a series documenting our experience with Helene.
