Sparrows used to be plentiful in the UK, but now there are hardly any left. It's awful seeing someone destroying them this way.

Over the years I’ve built and given away dozens of blue bird boxes, and I’m always thrilled to hear from the owners when the birds start using them. My 11 acres here in Georgia are 90 percent wooded and I’ve had good luck with boxes in the more open areas. I normally have about a dozen scattered around, and in a normal years I’ll have at least 4 or five occupied with blues usually producing at least 2 clutches each. Early this year a large rat snake was close to one box that had 5 eggs so I fashioned a predator guard like yours except with 4” pvc. I left it loose and the wind blowing it around made it rattle and the mama abandoned it! I stabilized it with some wire and later they used it again. The box was also 4” pvc of which I’ve made several . The seem to like it. (Painted gray usually) I love my blues!

It's a shame our government and media don't shed more light on how significant this problem has become.

1-1/2" wide hole by 7/8" 0r even as low as 3/4" is too small for a Sparrow but Swallows can enter.

Thank you for this video. I tried it but the sparrows figured it out. Too many sparrows in this area. They get to the box before the Bluebirds, no matter where we put the box. We do have a pair of Bluebirds nesting in a Gilbertson box and I have a sparrow spooker up . 🤞🏻 So we put a second Gilbertson box up but within a couple of hours, a male sparrow claimed it, so I took it down for now.

Nice video but the access hole seems too large for bluebirds. I've been building bluebird boxes for years and the access hole is 1 1/2". I also always affix a predator block over the access hole.

I saw a video on TH-cam where somebody actually use a slinky underneath their birdhouse and it was amazing when the squirrel climbed up the pole to reach the birdhouse as soon as his weight hits the slinky he fell down the pole on the spring. I thought that was a great idea and I think I'll try it myself combined with the stovepipe idea. Thank you for this valuable information

This year my husband made me a few V shaped Sparrow Spookers after not being able to trap and kill a very determined male sparrow. Very easily made out of dowels with some reflective shiny streamer type material hanging down to flutter over top and sides and a few long enough to touch the top of the opening of bird house. After eggs were laid I added these to the back of the houses with Gorilla tape and they worked perfectly. In fact the Blues and Tree Swallows used the dowels to perch on once they were used to them :)

How is it that the parents don't dive bomb and flutter above your head when you open the next. My BlueBirds attack me when I do this.

This is the third year for my successful bluebird nesting box. Unfortunately this year a Squirrels found it. End of story.

this absolutely does NOT work AT ALL. house sparrows figured out how to still get around this in less than a day. UGH....i just detest them. getting the BB gun!

I have to try the traps; I feel so bad for the Bluebirds in my backyard because every time they try to get into the houses, a nasty male sparrow blocks and scares them off. They have taken over all 3 houses!

Should you remove old nests every year after the reproduction cycle is over?

I park the car on drive way.. this spring time, a sparrow couple pooping on my car everyday and all day. I was pissed, so I bought mouse trap and set it up with rice. Got cha! A male was trapped and now I am free of these annoying creatures.

Blue birds also get lots of bug larvae off of dying branches on trees .

My bluebirds migrate somewhere in the summer and then come back in December. I wonder if you've seen them ?

Its very easy to deter unwanted birds from bluebird houses. Simply drill a medium sized hole in top center of house & cover with something that is semi-transparent. i have used this method for four years without one unwanted nest in my BB houses; occasionally a few twigs will be placed in one but then they stop. i came here to brag! i have already trapped, and euthanized, 35 house sparrows with this trap this summer and it’s only July!😊

Buy a sparrow trap and eradicate them. I found the perfect trap on TH-cam and have trapped and euthanized dozens. My songbirds came back immediately and between our bluebirds and tree swallows they have had 6 successful broods since last summer to now. It’s ongoing battle w the sparrows but well worth it!

man these brids are awful. i bought a house with a carriage house and theyve infested in the unfinished attic. im trying to restore this 1890 place. they ate all the wood soffits and keep going inside. they nested in all the insulation and there is almost none left because the weight makes it fall. theyve cost me prob 2 thousand dollars at least by now. the previous owners let them do this for years. i never seen a bird make a entire new giant new nest within a day of removing the nest. i mean these birds are literally killing themselve to get through barb wire and sealed up holes. they are breaking their necks
