Best place in the world for 3 months. But the winters are ugh!
Hey!!! I live in York, Maine too! I work at a store in York, I’ll have to say hi if I see you!
Adding I’ve been to northern Maine. It’s pretty desolate once you get into Aroostook county north of Bangor, but we have family way up there near Caribou so we always have a good time.
I think this guy is interviewing for a fake person who grew up in Maine. Painful!
Northern Maine and southern Maine are two different worlds. Southern Maine has places like Kennebunkport, old orchard beach, wells and so on tourist attractions and multi million dollar summer homes on the coast mostly out of staters. While northern Maine is very rural and almost stuck in time, where people still pump your gas and bring out your groceries to your car. Northern Maine is more like Canada while southern Maine is more like Massachusetts. To be honest when younger I couldn't stand it and was bored alot but now I couldn't see myself living anywhere else. I will say southern Maine has changed so much in the last 10-15 years, things happen today that 10 years ago would of sounded crazy but today it's the norm. Craziness has reached even the most out skirted places.
I love Maine. It's so beautiful!
Do they let you have an ESA (Emotional Support Animal) or do they still say no animals in a lot of areas?
Very helpful and well informed video, thank you, would love to come to Maine.
the jokes
Bonus pro: much less likely to be targeted by nukes.
My lease is up in July from West Los Angeles and I might try this I wonder would the town be receptive to a gal like myself 🌻🌻🌻🌻
Brad I'm a Cali girl my kiddo keeps telling me go to Maine and there's a island lol 🤣 I'm just so glad I found this no disrespect you are just so handsome 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻💕
I think it's great that some guy named Brad from York who has never been further north than Bangor and thinks eating a lobster roll is "taking one for the team" is going to educate me on the pros and cons on living in Maine. -Actual Mainer
I live in Rhode Island but I do like visiting old orchard beach every summer
My sister lives in Calais Maine and I really wasn't for sure what to think of what it was going to be like only coming from her everybody is different and their experience . . Maybe you can tell me what is the best thing about living in Calais Maine and the worst.. now you have to remember I'm from California where things are much faster pace you think I'll be bored out of my mind
I greatly appreciate a balanced review. And I'll tell you right now, a 15 minute drive to the grocery store ain't shit! Where I live in Mississippi, I am 35 miles away from pretty much everything. That's a 30-45 minute drive depending on weather and traffic. Thankfully finding a job won't be an issue as the company I work for has locations all over the state, York being one of them.
#1 Con to living in California The people are horrible its outrageous
Another thing I've noticed about Mainers is that, again, because they're so afraid of breaking the complacent bubble they're in they immediately shut down any idea of doing something new. I like to travel the globe and every time I show pictures of a place I've been they reply, in genuine enthusiasm, "Oh my god!!! That looks like so much fun! I've always wanted to go to Japan!" To which I reply, "Oh, you should! It's very enriching". Before I can finish the sentence they'll say, "Oh, no no I can't do that. I'm too old, it's too expensive, who'll take care of my dogs?, I wouldn't know my way around, well maybe someday, blah blah blah". Maine is a place of dreamers, not doers. There's always an excuse. I don't know if it's fear, laziness, or what.
My biggest complaint about Maine is that it's exceedingly dull because nobody ever wants to evolve. People find something that they like at a young age and just stick to that their whole lives instead of enjoying those activities but also trying new things. Nobody likes any kind of challenge or serendipity or change of any kind. Even getting my grandparents to try an escape room was too much. It's as if curiosity and ambition are treated as the 8th and 9th deadly sin. Life here is TOO easy and as a result it doesn't prepare for anything if you want something more. It's no surprise that the bulk of the population are old. Plus, there's very little diversity here so people aren't treated to new ideas much. Oh, and people are so introverted here as well. I'm am ambivert so I appreciate the "me time" but, again, people here are so afraid of getting out of their comfort zone that calling out sick for a day and having an adventure in unfamiliar territory doesn't appease them. It's just so depressing and lonely.
Have fun in ghettos hood
Thank you Brad!
The Maine Office of Tourism reports 21 million for 2018, so I'm unsure where you got the 37 million number.
Portland press herald and other sources from my Google search said 37M for 2020 so I went with that 🤷🏻♂️
I heard so much good things about Maine looking for retirement place with 4 season love skiing and outdoors thanks for your videos!👍👍
I would freeze to death.
“I live in York maine.” Ah, a northern Massachusetts’s resident.
🍌
Southern Maine I don't even consider Tru Maine. Then again being from Aroostook County, it's also No Man's Land. Living there half my life and being away for the other half really makes miss it
Southern Maine, north Boston?
What I love about Maine: A TON of local restaurants. We know how to cook. A lot of breweries and a few distilleries. Popham Beach state park is a gem. It's huge and the landscape changes with the tides. Bus system runs from Boston to Bangor along I-95. Bangor has an extensive bus system to get around the greater Bangor region. The patrons largely are on the sketchy side but you can get around inexpensively if you don't want to or can't own a vehicle. The summers are beautiful and lush. The humidity may be up to 100% but so worth the landscape and ability to garden without fear of drought. We have a great variety of temps in the summer from 65° cold days to 105° scorchers. Bangor has worked hard to compete with Portland which is much too far. So we get business from western, eastern, northern Maine. Excellent access to major concert tours. We have beautiful little towns like Hallowell that provide excellent atmosphere for dining, drinking, Maine-made shopping. In the winters we have fairly good mountains for snowboarding/skiing. I love going out snowboarding all morning and afternoon then hitting up their town for excellent food & cocktails. We have camp life. Camp is a unique lifestyle to us. It does not mean camping in a trailer or tent. They're lake cottages and traditionally they don't have electricity or plumbing but most do now. I live for lake life and we have a ton of them. Swimming, boating, reading in the sun, sitting on the deck over the water and it's crowded with family and company. We have great fishing and hunting. You're very likely to bag a moose, bear, deer, goose, partridge. I'm not personally a good driver but most of us are. It's our roads that will wreck you. The locals whose families have been in Maine for fifty years or more are incredible. They're tough and leathery but kind and giving. They'll go out if their way to help a stranger or a friend. Our state has a ton of French Canadian families. They are awesome. They're very close families. Usually huge families. They get together often and know how to have a good time. Their food is delicious. They sure know how to cook. Things I hate: There's not a lot to do if you aren't physically in shape or your family or friends don't have a camp or a boat. It gets more pronounced in the winter. Stuck indoors paying out the nose for fuel to keep from freezing. The mud, ice, and snow are no fun. Although they're common across the nation, it's just miserable. You have to drive. A LOT. This man is very far south and only an hour from Boston. He has quick access to things the majority of us don't. To have a life in Maine you have to be willing to drive. Bangor region. Lewiston region. Presque Isle region. Augusta region. Portland region. Calais region (if you have connections to that part of Maine I mourn for you. Those roads are like driving in outer space. If you breakdown there's no cell service, no villages. Just woods and a freaky sketchy long highway with nothing on it for miles and miles.). I have friends and family in all but Presque Isle and Calais region. Maybe Bar Harbor/Ellsworth is its own region, too. Our schools aren't that great. When I was a kid in early 2000s they were always striking or making us walk to our field trips. There was money for novelty laptops for every 7th grader in the state in 2003 but none for textbooks, home economics, arts, buses, new roofs, heat, you name it there was a problem. Our roads are terrible. I've been to other states that complain about their roads but if they knew what Maine drives on, they'd shut up and be grateful. Our potholes and frost heaves demand blood. And our winter road treatments will eat your undercarriage and panels up. Don't bother buying a new car unless you have the money to treat it so they don't rust out.
I used to live in Harrison as a kid n I loved it!
I recently moved from Maine to Minneapolis and I love where I live now. Having spent nearly all of my 40 years in Maine I can emphatically say that the best years of my life were going to school in Boston and these last two years living out West. Every facet of my life is better now, its so hard to even compare Third World Maine to the capital of the Great Lakes. Things he forgot to mention: Maine has one of the worst opiate problems in the country. Maine has more methadone clinics than states 4-10X their population. Alcoholism is rampant in fact in the 1800's the Temperance movement was started there. There was one distillery for every square block of city space and they rang the church bells at 10am and 2pm for what locals called Rum Hour. Everyone would pound spirits for an hour and go back to work.Even in 2020 Maine ranks as one of the worst states for alcohol addiction nationally. Maine has one of the highest rates of births resulting in mental or physical disability. No one wants to talk about why twice as many people there are born incapacitated than in any other part of the US. Maine is the only New England state with a history of extensive KKK membership. Racism is abundant there given the fact that in the 1920's almost 50% of the state were card carrying, dues paying members of the Klan. I worked for a local pizza chain when I was young and met the family who actually founded the KKK in Maine(the family that owns _ats Pizza). The most disgusting, misogynist hate filled rednecks I've ever met. The job market is abysmal and wages are even worse; you can kiss your career goodbye. The only people who seemed to thrive there were retirees and trust fund kids. The cost of living is deceptively high; income and sales taxes are on par with national numbers but property taxes are far higher than other states and you get less in return. Imagine paying $5000-7000 / year in property tax on an avg. priced house and not even having running water or trash removal provided. Electricity, natural gas, heating oil, car insurance, food and clothes are all more expensive than national averages by a factor of 1.5-2X. Aroostook county is one of the fastest growing centers for methamphetamine arrests in the country. Lyme Disease is rampant and if the ticks don't carry Lyme they probably have have Anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted fever or worse. I once found 14 ticks on myself after a walk in the woods. Crime is under reported for more reasons than I can get into. Half my friends were diddled or raped growing up and schools, parents and authorities always looked the other way. That sort of thing doesn't happen here, its all good people here they would say. Nevertheless Maine has a higher rate of sexual assault and child molestation, as do most rural states. And just in case you're still reading; the locals are rude, insular, they have an inscrutable form of Pigeon English only they can speak and they smell like the mold covered trailers they all live in.
Darling. I'm familiar with the greater portion of Maine. You don't have a clue about some of the things you're talking about. Racism? Really? You really believe that? It's not true. There are racists in every state but our instance is very low per capita. So you know one family that might have a hate problem. I doubt very much that family is still that way. Have eaten in Orono all my young and adult life. They love and treat everyone equally. You're not seeing the whole picture. We're largely accepting. Alcoholism? Maybe. Nothing like Colorado. Colorado is disgustingly drunk and my jaw dropped when I got there and saw all the liquor stores in every town and city. They're everywhere and the people are pounding cases of bear and bottles of liquor all over the place each and every day. Yes, we have a massive drug problem and our former Governor was not wrong when he said men are bringing up carloads of narcotics and getting our women pregnant. It was controversial that he named black men in particular but the police arrests in the news have confirmed the narrative. It truly is predominantly black males from New York and Massachusetts.
lol @bradley no comment on the sexual abuse tho yikes!
@@kikih6389 you're reading too much into it. You really want to talk about kids being sexually abused? That's disgusting and what's more disgusting is the amount of children I've met in colorado who all have sexual abuse stories. It's absolute filth.
@@bradleymiller437 Colorado and Maine, both rural states with high rates of sexual assault. Thank you for proving my point.
I live off grid in Alaska and am wanting to move to Maine. I laughed when you made the comment about having to drive 15 minutes to get milk.....I'm used to doing 30 some minutes to the store. You guys get that much sun? That would be nice
He lives down on the New Hampshire border. He is an hour from Boston and he's surrounded by city life. He is not experiencing the average Maine experience.
This was a lovely video about northern New Hampshire.
Yes because Southern Maine surely isn't how the rest of the state lives. His comment about not having to drive far is not reality for the majority of us. He's only an hour from Boston.
How are you gunna mention Kittery and not mention the Kittery Trading Post?
Anyone can say what they want about winter but I love winter so the last con doesn’t exist for me. In a year or so I’m planning to move there so I can’t wait.
I am moving to Maine for 6 months for work coming from Australia. It looks great and TBH my only fear is the cold. Here in Australia our coldest days are 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Not looking forward to an American winter!
driving 15 mins is a con?? coming from california i'm laughing so hard LOL
Love your video. We are retiring to Maine in 2023.
Me encanta ❤️
Believe it or not, more people visit Maine every year than Thailand!
Brad...your gorgeous man lol. I'm watching maine videos cause may be moving there from mass soon.🤗
I live in Las Vegas, Nevada and planning on moving to Maine (huge change I know!). I’m excited but scared. Thank you for the video!
Are you still a Realtor? Who does your video editing?
Good information
Governor Abbott needs to send a couple hundred bus loads of Mexican immigrants to Maine
Maine sounds nice. My family wants to move to a warmer climate(big whoop). Housing costs is a biggie. What about flooding?
Thought this was an older Celtics coach brad stevens 😂
I lived in Maine my whole life
WICKED COOL is in relation to verbiage used in MASS not MAINE bro.
Keep doing these videos Brad, you have a great presence and style
Seeing you bite into that lobster roll was the best part of this video!
I would guess 35 out of those 37 million annual visitors never make it north out of southern Maine.
You’re part of the problem driving up housing costs in Maine!
Agreed, soo tired of these carpetbaggers from New York and Massachusetts moving here after turning their states into uninhabitable shitholes voting in scumbag neoliberal politicians only to flock here like a bunch of termites driving up the cost of living to levels that are unaffordable for the local citizens and then they act taken back and surprised when the locals are unfriendly to them.
