@@alwaysforwardyt I was actually solo on that trip. Thankfully I recognized that I had stopped sweating and some of the other signs and had an inreach device with me. I was able to get myself to an outfitter camp I had passed earlier in the day and the nice folks there took care of me for a day while my wife and brother in law bounced up some 4x4 trails to extract me. In hindsight I should have just hit the SOS and called the helicopter but it all worked out in the end.

Thank you! Yes, the nature in those latitudes is beautiful and wild. And yes, knowing that there is wild life that can kill you truly changes the experience. The fire we made was a truly special moment, and not just because we were wet and cold and needed the warmth 😅 I loved spending a couple of hours by the fire pit after Caroline went to bed. @@alwaysforwardyt Yes it brought back many happy memories of my FIRST Hike in that long HOT SUMMER of 1975/6, Pennine Way Hike that I used for training to join the Military. I repeated the Hike this time from North to South when I left the Forces in 1979 to relive and regain my Civillian Status and later went on the C2C West to East 1980 and the East to West C2C in 1981. Then a two year break to train for the John OGroats to Lands End hike, followed two years later by a South to North Lands End to John OGroats hike and finally finished Hiking after completing a THREE YEAR SOLO HIKE of the complete Circumnavigation of the at the time UN OPENED Coastal Hike of the UK Mainland, my only stipulation was when I arrived at a river I would follow it inland until the first Bridge then cross over the river to continue the Coastal Hike. THREE YEARS LATER I completed the Coastline of Scotland, England and Wales way before the Official route was announced a few years ago. That last route I did not record my milage but I have see the distance for the New Coastal Route Titled "King Charles III England Coast Path" quoted as being 2,700 miles long when it is completed. @@alwaysforwardyt I would love to get back on the Long Distance Hiking trails again but I know the damage done to my Knee Joints would not permit anything more than maybe a local 5 mile hike based over a 10 day period of time. Yes I miss it but the damage done will not heal so I just after make do with watching others Hike and pass on my memories of Hikes I have completed in the Past. My ONE Regret is never hiking across the USA from West Coast to East coast on one of my 10 visits to the USA, but on one vacation I did a 5 mile day Hike along the Appalation Train near Roannoak Virginia. It was only after spotting a Bear I became affraid as I had no Firearm being a UK CItizen just over there on Vacation. Still I have my memories and TH-cam to refresh the parts I have forgotten. I don't know whether you'll be climbing the Everest or the Aconcagua, but I'd say the Mythic Ultra should be a good mountaineering jacket (weight to warmth ratio looks good). Good luck!

The Mythic Ultra won't be as warm as the Positron, but taking into account the weight difference, I'd still pick that one (Mythic). You can then add a ~200g down vest (Mountain Hardware Whisperlite, for example) for a more functional, flexible clothing system (that vest packs very small so you can always have it in a easily accessible pocket of your pack).

@@alwaysforwardyt I'm out of practice doing unsupported winter expeditions in the far north. The last time I did that was many years ago. I slept seven days in a tent pulling a pulk from Saltoluokta into the heart of Sarek but I wasn't alone. I had a friend with me. There's a photo of our tent on the community tab of my youtube page. If I were to do it again I'd need to do some training I think. I remember how damn hard it was pulling that pulk. And the sense of isolation is profound. Every decision can be the difference between coming out alive and not. Even things like making sure your gloves don't blow away! Really impressive that you did that alone. It's a whole other level of psychological drama.

That sounds like a great trip! I know Saltoluokta and Sarek, of course. Being alone takes safety to another level because you are all you have. For that reason, fears amplify. Either way is very enjoyable! 😊❤️❄️🌨️🌬️

l love Scotland too, but the Arctic weather plays in another league. l did my very first thru-hike (and first time wild-camping) in Scotland in winter (first week of March 2020, the SUW). Had a done the same in Scandinavia l would now be dead. That's the difference 😊 (and the much larger landscape, taller mountains, etc.). But, again, l do love Scotland and the Scottish people. BTW, this video proves l can stay quiet and do silent filming (beginning and end 10:03 🤐😶😅).

Yes, it was beautiful! l have hiked quite a bit in Scotland (SNT, CWT, SUW, etc.) and l always had a great time. Scottish people welcomed and treated me very well! l'll never forget 😊We now live in the US and every now and then my wife and l talk about Scotland and how we would like to go back in the future (when back to Europe). As for the ticks... it's what it is... Thanks! In my experience, when sleeping around or below -20°C (the colder the more noticeable), putting the inflatable pad directly on the ground (or the tent's floor) then adding the closed cell on top achieves better insulation. In the other configuration, l feel the inflatable pad sucks my body heat. Very noticeable, again, when it's sufficiently cold. You may achieve different results with different sleeping pads 🤷🏻‍♂️ but that's my 'general' recommendation.

Great stuff. l have met Norwegian, US and UK soldiers in the area. It's always the highlight of my time in Norway and they've always treated me really well. l try to go and spend 2-3 months in Dividalen every winter. And yes, l'm coming next winter again!

It was COVID times when l walked the Nordkalottleden. l did not break any rules, it was legit for me to walk the trail, but l did have to book the cabins in advance as not only were they locked with the usual DNT key, but also with a combination padlock (both system were in place). If you didn't book in advance, you would not have the combination for the padlock and hence, you could not stay in the cabins. It was painful, but l managed more or less.
