Pasture Pioneers // Matthias + Rosie
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 5 ก.ค. 2024
Hey! We’re Matthias and Rosie, the Pasture Pioneers. We post new videos weekly, covering practical tips, insight, and encouragement for your own small acre homestead (or future one!). Our passion is helping families get started right where they are using what they have.
The secret truth is, you don't need a lot of land in order to be less dependent on the system. If managed well, you just need a few acres. When it comes to homesteading, we believe in the power of stewardship, leaving the land better than we found it. We created this channel to demonstrate exactly what you can do with two acres because truthfully, our pasture is just over one.
Whether you have one acre or ten, it's our desire you'll take away something and implement on your own homestead.

Behind the Scenes: At Home Butchering Prep
So much goes into slaughtering and processing your own animals. There's your time, food, and supplies you have to consider and plan for. But is it worth it? I hope you watch to find out! We're Matthias and Rosie, we are a family of seven homesteading on two acres. We're passionate about stewarding the land we have well and leaving it better than we find it.

Homestead Chores // Final Preserving of the Season
มุมมอง 14421 วันที่ผ่านมา
Life on the homestead is starting to slow down. We FINALLY found some hay. Not enough for the whole winter, but it's a start. Matthias is using the container he built to transport our lambs to feed hay to the sheep. In the kitchen, I'm processing onions and beets that we purchased to put away. This is the last on my list before butchering season starts! I couldn't believe how much money I save ...

A simple no-fuss way to add fermented feed to. your animals' diet! In this video, Matthias walks you through how he mixes up the feed for our chickens, the benefits of fermenting, and how long he lets it sit. The chicken feed we purchase has finely milled nutrients added in, nutrients that would normally be wasted by the birds. However, when we add water it becomes more readily available to the...

New subscriber. Excellent video. Will be sharing it with 3 of our sons
Awesome! Thank you! Let us know what you'd like to see in the future. 😃
Looks amazing! Love crockpot meals.
They are always convenient, for sure! Thanks for watching. :)
I still have beets in the garden if you need more 😉
Haha I don't know that I want to do more. But I appreciate the offer!
You guys are amazing.
Making the most out of what you have. Thanks for the great videos.
Thanks for watching! 😀
Love that you share some of the ways you cook the lamb! I really enjoy lamb, but it my family does not. 😩 Otherwise, I’d keep it as a staple in our freezer.
Depending on the cut it can have a stronger flavor! Our kids like some cuts more than others. Fatty cuts are the ones that have a lot of flavor. But that said, they're milder than wool sheep meat! Thanks for watching!! ☺
Here in Canada Ontario/Quebec its been a hard season for hay growth, feeling you. Alternative positivity is that you have extra food resources for your family. Keep up the good work!
Very true! Thank you for watching. Praying next year brings the necessary rainfall for hay for you all as well!
Awesome work,
Thank you so much 😀
Hey thank you so much for sharing your experience and wisdom with the world ❤. Do you put anything in the jar with the carrots except water? Also how long do you pressure them ?
I added 1tsp salt to quarts and 1/2 tsp to pints. Pressure canned for 25 min at 10lb pressure for pints and 30min for quarts. Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed your video. Beautiful background music.
Thank you for watching!! ☺
Those baby chick's are so cute☺️
We think so too! The kids love how fluffy and soft they are.
Rosie!!! I'm an old homeschool friend. I'm so excited that I found this! I hope yall experience so much success and joy in this youtube journey.
I'm so excited you found us! Thank you very much. 😄
super helpful! Looking forward to getting into this more. For us, I can see Carrots, Zucchini, and sweet corn.
Thanks for the feedback! Anything you manage to grow yourself is super satisfying to eat. 😋
Looks like a Kieffer pear.
Thanks for that! I just looked them up and it's very possible. The tree we harvested from is at least 60+ years old and has not been taken care of for several years now.
Canning is a lot of work, but the extra food is a blessing!
It sure is! Thanks for watching!
What ratio of dry feed and water do you use?
@juliacullom373 most tell you to enough water to cover the feed about 2". Fermenting not only reduces the cost but they digest more and get more nutrition from the feed. They also poop less and don't eat their poop like they do when there's undigested feed in it.
I would say I use 2/3 water to 1/3 feed. The feed will expand nearly twice of what it is when it's dry. Hope that helps!
Extra bonus, less poop. I've always fermented my feed. I'm wondering if you found a way to automatically feed it? I had to leave for a few days when my mother passed and could only think of dry feed.
That is something we haven't put the time into figuring out. I'm sure it can be done though!
Does the fermentation process work best in any specific temperature range? I’m assuming the process would go faster, the warmer it is. And are there any signs to look for that it is over-fermented? Does this ever develop mold (which I assume would mean it is no longer safe for the animals to consume)? I appreciate the video! This is something I’ve just started looking into.
We've found that it works best in 70 degree temps but still use it all the time. If it's colder it takes a little longer and with warmer temps it's faster. We use ours up within 3-5 days so we've never seen it over fermented. It can develop a white color on top (not sure that I would call it mold) which is not a bad thing. Some people completely submerge the feed in water but we got tired of having to strain out the feed. We can get away from that by using it before it goes bad.
Your applesauce and apple butter looks amazing! I am getting ready to can applesauce myself. :)
Thank you! Applesauce was the first thing I ever canned. Hope it goes well for you!
Let me join the line by saying how sweet those boards are! Also, apple butter looks amazing!
Thanks! Apple butter is the best on fresh bread.
one of our favorite breakfast recipes!
It's so easy! And I love that it uses up a lot of sourdough.
Ahh I seen your Facebook post about the apple sauce . Didn’t know you got your channel going congratulations . Looks great . Sarah !
Thanks!!
Beautiful cutting boards!!
Thank you!!
Enjoyed your video! Nice work in the kitchen and the wood shop.
Thank you!
Gorgeous boards!!!
I think so too! They turned out really well.
@@thepasturepioneers Etsy shop (or similar) ideas down the road. The holidays are around the corner and they would make AMAZING gifts! :)
Those cutting boards are beautiful! 😍 and that stash of canned goods is amazing!!!
Thank you!!
Loved this! Congrats on getting all the canning done. What a feat! And those cutting boards are beautiful.
Thank you!!
Where do you get your water nipple?
Rural King! You can probably find one on Amazon too.
@@thepasturepioneers thank you
Great info, interesting how taste is so different between the breeds. Smoker made me hungry!
We'll have to have you and Julia over to sample some!
Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for watching!
Where I am in Canada Quebec, closer to Malone NY, in my corn bed, I put a lot of layers of hay over to cover and no weeds came up. First year on this land so not sure what it will be like next year but I removed anything I saw with seeds, hoping for the best! Thanks for your tips, keep up the good work :)
Hey Jenny! It's hard to tell what it will be like. Our first year using the tunnel was really manageable and we grew a lot in there, but after that hay it's been a futile battle. There's a lot of factors that are in play for hay making and cutting. I hope you don't have the same issue we did!
Cool trick with the pinto beans! You guys aren’t kidding, we need some rain down here!
Yeah a few days in a row of steady rain would sure be welcome! Thanks for watching! 😀
Very interesting. I hope we can get pigs sometime! We have 3 apple trees. I heard it makes your bacon sweet?
I hadn't heard that before, but I'm sure it does play a role! There is no comparison to homegrown bacon. 😃
thanks for the video help! i am gonna use decomp to keep a greenhouse warm so its a great idea to use deep bedding for chickens. thanks!
That makes a lot of sense! Thanks for watching!
Great Video thanks! Greetings from Ireland :D
Thanks for watching!!
I love the bacon! Nice job again on the video.
It's the best part of a pig for sure! Thanks for watching 😃
New here, nice coop set up and your chemistry, beautiful parents 💕
Thanks so much! 😊
So excited to see more, we do not have chickens yet, so we could definitely use advice. Good luck on your channel!
Thank you! Chickens are a great first animal. 😃
I love deep bedding in the winter! I also enjoy my electric fence (other than the grass growing over the bottom so quickly in the summer. 🤣). Love the little church in the background of your property!
Yes it's so helpful! We love that it lowers the workload. Thank you!
Great ideas! We have 3 chickens so this will all be helpful!
Thank you! Thanks for watching. 😃
Thank you for the inspiration and knowledge!!!
Thank you for watching!
Love the tour! We love and use solar netting too!
Yes! It's wonderful. Thanks for watching!
I really like y'all's watering system. I also do deep litter with my flock with hemp bedding.
I thought my husband was a genius for rigging that up. We haven't used hemp bedding before, what's it like?
Gathering ideas for my backyard chickens one day! Keep up the good work y’all.
Thank you!!
Awesome set-up...well done, guys!!
Thank you!!
Excellent video! You have a well thought out system for your chickens.
Matthias gets all the credit! 😃
I'm working with 12.5 acres. I started a honey farm first besides a massive garden thats behind a deer fence.
Honey is on our list for one day! Wow, you can do so much with 12.5 acres. 😀
So excited to follow y’all’s journey! Coming over from TH-cam Success Academy on Facebook.
Good for you!
