I used to work in Chester and lived just inside the border in Buckley..... You're correct that the two - level tier shopping precinct design is unique to Chester; I've visited a good number of the mediaeval cities in the UK and not even York has such complete architecture. However, Chester has nowhere near a million souls in its population. A million people may visit the city on a regular basis or live in the surrounding area but its native populace is far smaller.

Durham has it's own county called County Durham. It is north of Yorkshire & south of Northumberland, which contains Newcastle, north again if which is Scotland. Don't tell anyone from Durham that they are in Yorkshire.

Come on, get your facts right, Durham is not, never has been and never will be in yourshire. Land of the price bishops - County Durham is unique, as for many centuries it was a virtually independent state ruled not by the king, but by powerful `Prince Bishops', who were more or less the `Kings of County Durham

I visited Durham in February, its lovely the Cathedral is beautiful especially inside, but is in Yorkshire? Im confused.

Durham is in the county of, er, Durham - often called County Durham.

Durham has been its own thing since before the Norman Invasion in 1066.

As a young man (in the late sixties) I lived in Hatfield and would often visit St Albans with my girl friend. We would often visit the Fighting Cocks pub and once or twice the nearby Roman ruins. I now live in Australia so it's nice to get a chance to see St Albans again.

Sorry nice Vid lived in the US for 30 y but lived in Ware Hertforfmdshire, so visited the Cathedral many times. Fell free to corect me. But a large part of the Cathedral is made from the Rom a n fort bricks 1k resicaling. When the Reformation came a Cathedrals in Britain had there frescos chizzeled away from the stone easy. Since roman brick builder advised youst plaster over it. So they are painstaikingly restoring it for 30y. Wont be offended if you update me.
