(Kant make) Time for Nothing (2): The Skeptic's friend, Time, the Transcendental Turn
มุมมอง 5014 วันที่ผ่านมา
We continue to try make time for nothing with the help of Kant: this time we get very close to time, space and the tactile vs optical means toward their contemplation. We remain loosely grounded in the Transcendental Aesthetic whilst Hadley begins to expand our reference to the Critique of Pure Reason. This time we conclude with a contextualization of the transcendental turn. (Apologies for the...

The skeptic says knowledge is impossible, but to whom do they say that? In a previous conversation (th-cam.com/video/seWCCTxAGW8/w-d-xo.html) Sipho provoked a line of thought between us by imagining what the conditions of possibility are for Descarte's skeptical meditator. Do we need to be embedded in a linguistic community with its own historical momentum and repository of thought in order to ...
Truth is that which runs after the Truth and Alienates it's Friends

An end of year follow up and continuation of our collective inquiry. Here we source from the text "Truth is that which runs after the truth" which was recommended by @nightoftheworld on a previous video. At some point in the conversation we seem to reach a kind of integration of this active-processual conception of truth and our thinking with regards to virtue being taught via a kind of appropr...

A heritage day special! We reflect on a recent retreat at Poplar Grove that combined Zen and the work of Original Condition. A wealth of material stood before us and we did our best to do it justice. In this special interface I am joined by my brother Eamonn who helps me deliver and think through some material that has gathered between us. A few fun anecdotes are given, one relational koan-knot is explored, and we ultimately arrive at the question of the true sa...

1:49:25 The image of the owl-as philosophical fowl of reflexivity/retroactivity echoes Cadell’s earlier point about the _“accent”_ which orthodoxy/catholicism/protestantism respectively place on the trinity. The accent on the owl as philosophical thinking bird, perched patiently looking backwards-and the pragmatic truth that it also must be active, must take flight into the night, to hunt/eat/live, reminds me again of more Chesterton. _What’s Wrong with the World,_ 1910: “The Sans-culottes believed (as their name might imply) in a return to simplicity. They believed most piously in a remote past; some might call it a mythical past. For some strange reason man must always thus plant his fruit trees in a graveyard. Man can only find life among the dead. *Man is a misshapen monster, with his feet set forward and his face turned back.* He can make the future luxuriant and gigantic, so long as he is thinking about the past. When he tries to think about the future itself, his mind diminishes to a pin point with imbecility, which some call Nirvana. To-morrow is the Gorgon; a man must only see it mirrored in the shining shield of yesterday. If he sees it directly he is turned to stone.”

@@holeycow excellent, he’s master of paradox. Respect to you my friend, out here submitting your beliefs to meaningful discussions with others, honorable stuff. One last adjacent literature I think you might enjoy-a short essay by Derek Briton (Athabasca Uni) from a conference in 2002 over “altered states of adult education” called _The Truth Is That Which Runs After the Truth._ It’s about the intersection of Lacanian psychoanalysis and adult education, about overcoming the post-disciplinary knowledge crisis in academia with the aid of psychoanalytical insight. An excerpt: “As opposed to science's cummulative notion of truth, then, the psychoanalytic notion is subtractive- psychoanalytic truth is that which must be excluded to make knowledge possible. It is this conception of truth as a hole in the very fabric of knowledge, as that which can never be symbolized, that serves as the basis for a notion of certainty other than that advanced by science.”

@@nightoftheworld another potent recommendation, thank you! I noted the same excerpt that you quoted above, TRUTH AS A HOLE, holey cow! Haha, 'what's in a name?' and all that. I appreciate your recognition of the courage that a degree of exposure requires! It has very much been a process of trusting before 'understanding', as Briton expresses in his paper. My 'field-work' of 'being Christian' has exposed me to these psychoanalytic structures which in turn has brought me to the necessity of the work of figures like Lacan and Hegel. The other way around would have been cleaner but it doesn't seem to pan out that way. (At another level, I don't know how I would have come across this wonderfully concise and potent paper that you recommend here if I had not trusted the impulse for the recorded conversation and trusted that it was worthwhile sharing it. ((Cadell's encouragement and participation here has been invaluable))). I'll link the paper mentioned for any1 scrolling past with curiosity www.researchgate.net/publication/328563628_The_Truth_Is_That_Which_Runs_After_the_Truth

36:52 *jesus was authority because he bottomed out* reminds me of the Chesterton quote in _Orthodoxy:_ “That a good man may have his back to the wall is no more than we knew already, but that God could have His back to the wall is a boast for all insurgents forever. Christianity is the only religion on earth that has felt that omnipotence made God incomplete. Christianity alone felt that God, to be wholly God, must have been a rebel as well as a king. Alone of all creeds, Christianity has added courage to the virtues of the Creator. For the only courage worth calling courage must necessarily mean that the soul passes a breaking point-and does not break.”
