How do you know how much right and down thrust to build in. I'm converting a great planes gee bee but using a fixed mount.
@@sal2703 Start with what is known. Most RC aircraft required 2° of right thrust and 2° of down thrust. Ultimately the first flight will determine whether you need more or less down thrust or right thrust. The way you can tell if you need more right thrust is that when the plane is flying and you give it throttle without any input, the plane will pull immediately left. That’s indicative of the P factor, causing the aircraft to be pulled left because of the torque of the prop. At that point, you’d wanna go ahead and add a little bit more right thrust. The way you can tell if you need more down thrust is basically the same. When you give the plane throttle, the plane will pitch up suddenly, not gradually, indicating that the plane needs additional down thrust. What I recommend is to just put a washer between the motor and the firewall. Washers have different thicknesses therefore they a more precise change in the angle of the motor.
I have a newer version of this from Seagull Geebee. The top hatch is double the size of your cutout. Another change they made is the LG struts, a second rear strut was added. But I declined to use it because when the front struts are compressed the rear strut does not flex enough. So, the block of wood at the rear gets busted out. I was also shorted the clevises for the wires and my LHS could not find clevises to match the thread on the turnbuckles, so I replaced them all. Another small point is the motor mount drill hole marks for the DLE 20 is wrong. They are spaced about 3/16 too tight. The wing servos are also too tight and needed removing 1/16 of ply to be able to insert the servo. Other than these minor problems I found the build very straight forward and well made. The tail wheel has also increased in size it looks like.
@@michaelgutzmer3303 I do wish I could have made the hatch bigger.
Hilitchi 140Pcs 8Sizes Stainless Steel Neoprene EPDM Bonded Sealing Gasket Washers, Cushioning Washers Assortment Kit. available on Amazon
The one I just received comes with a rear strut also. But the instructions don't mention it.
I suspect the version you have is probably a later version. I’ll bet you dimes to donuts they probably had incidences where the landing gear was collapsing. The Great Planes Gee Bee R2 has a front and rear strut. What I would recommend is just run your hand over the wing and see if you can find a hole or a slot for that rear strut. If you go to my Facebook page, maybe you could send me a picture and I could help you. Just click on the icon for my channel here on TH-cam and you should see a link there for the Facebook page after clicking on the description of the channel.
@@PlaneFunRC the rear strut is inserted into a hole for the wheel pant mounting block. The problem is that the front strut is spring compression, and the rear strut is not. So if the front strut is compressed it puts a great deal of force on the rear strut with almost no place to go. When I tested it, the rear block broke off. I might just leave the rear strut off.
@ See if you can locate a pair of Robart Gee Bee struts. They are Oleo struts. They would be for the Great Planes Gee Bee but they might work on your Gee Bee as well.
What kind of servos did you use?
@@allen574 The stock servos. I purchased the plug n play. You could use Hitec HS-65 servos.
I'm building the same kit. I purchased it in 1986 and decided to finish it now 38 years later. I have experienced, by watching a bunch of videos, that the two folks that successfully flew the model had a lot of up Elevator trim (which is down on a canard airplane). Let me know if you ever successfully flew yours. Thank you.
@@michaeldamico5152 hi Michael. Yes it did fly successfully but you’re 100% correct, you’re going to need a lot of up trim and when you’re landing, make sure that you do not go below quarter throttle. Be prepared for that nose to drop. Make your approach long and you’re gonna come in hot. Also, you’re going to need a cupcake tin size of tail weight stuck inside the fuse as far back as possible. Literally pick up a silicone cupcake liner from Amazon and fill that to the top with a combination of lead shot and epoxy. Make sure to add the angular bracing to the main landing gear. Apparently the angular bracing was added in later kits because thelanding gear collapsed. I will tell you that it flies really well and it’s very fast.
Saw that a long time ago!
I have seen something like that in real life at a rc plane park
Wow! Wonder why it broke in half. Looks super clean while doing it too!
@@robieosborne7369 it was amazing to watch
Nice build, I plan the same probably during this winter... quick question, what exact 6S LiPo size did you choose to get the right CG..? I do have some 6S 4'200. Paired to 12S, would they result in a good battery weight?
@@PascalErné-u9t 6s 8,000mAh
Where did you get it from and is it safe to drive it with 4s battery?
@@Marxuboi So if you’re talking about the plane, I found the plane in a hobby shop in Myrtle Beach, SC just hanging from the ceiling. As for the motor, they’re on eBay. If you type in contra rotating brushless motor in the search, you’ll see there’s a whole selection of these motors available. I would put a link here, but TH-cam deletes comments that have links. They do have a version of these motors that do use a 4S. I can tell you that this particular motor set up with two 3S batteries is more than enough. It’s like putting a 6S battery on a flat foamy. It’s got a ton of power.
@@PlaneFunRC Thank you
Any chance you still have the manual for this?
@@lostshotslewis9414 yep
@@lostshotslewis9414 i’ll tell you what I can do for you, go ahead and choose the membership for my channel. It’s only $.99. I will then go ahead and post a video just for you of the manual. Just let me know as soon as you buy the membership and then I’ll post it.
Did you fly this edf and what were your thoughts around it as far as power and performance
@@mikemetz8016 No not yet.
@@PlaneFunRC Did you flew it yet?
If the motors are on the same axis then they are contra rotating (like in your model). If you have a twin and the props don't rotate the same way, you have a counter rotating setup.
Yes, there is an element of truth to what you’re saying. Both in essence illicit the same effect by eliminating torque caused by the propeller spinning.
Look forward to seeing all your Nall videos this year. Im hoping to finally make it out there Nall in the Fall '25
Hell yeah
No sorry. The plane was already built when I purchased from a hobby shop. I just needed to add the motor and radio.
Looks really cool, got amy videos of the full build and instructions
No, I’m sorry I don’t. The plane was already built. I found it hanging up in a hobby shop in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Not often
Please sir, if you would help me. I have a quickie just like you have. I'm taking the OS 50FSR out to convert to electric. What prop are you running on your quickies? I'm desperate for some advice before going out & buying the same power set up you have.
12x6 APC
I love this plane! Do you still have it? If so, would you consider selling it?
Yep still have it. Sorry, not selling. Thank you for asking though. 😁
@@PlaneFunRC I completely understand. If you hear of one for sale, send 'em my way please! Thanks in advance.
Will do.
what is the size of the motor mount that comes with the moter bc i cant find the dimensions anywhere
It doesn’t really come with a mount. There are holes behind the first motor for the screws to pass through.
@@PlaneFunRC I see thank you
Saul, I've wanted to build an RC model of the Waterman Arrowplane for a while. While I was looking for drawings, I came across the TH-cam videos of your build of the Skymasters Waterman Arrowplane kit (th-cam.com/video/nKMBenu5Xlo/w-d-xo.html). The plan in your kit is the only set of Arrowplane drawings I've ever seen and are exactly the kind of drawings I am looking for to build my Arrowplane model. Is there some way I could get or buy a copy of your Arrowplane kit plans? Thanks, Richard
Hi Richard. Thank you so much for the comment. Let me see what I can do. I still have the plans. I would need to scan them and post them on one of the RC build threads on rcgroups.com. Please bear with me as this may take a week or two for me to get to this. I promise I will be in touch with you and provide you with the link of where I posted the plans.
@@PlaneFunRC Saul, Good to hear that you will put them on RCG. I am Richard N there and fly electrics and half of what I fly are tailless. There is a lot about the Arrowbile out there but no drawings of the Arrowplane. Post it and I will build one.
@@fragment555 Hi Richard. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I just needed to find the time to go up to Staples and have them make a copy of the plans. I have a copy of the plans as well as other templates for the ribs and other parts. I tried posting them on rcgroups.com but the file sizes for the plans and the other templates are too large. Therefore, if you want to send me your email I can email them directly to you. Also, if you go onto RCgroups.com and do a search for the Waterman Arrowplane, I just posted a build thread on there. If you don’t wanna put your email address here on TH-cam then go ahead and IM me via rcgroups.com and I will go ahead and send you a copy of the plans.
@@PlaneFunRC Saul, PMed you on RCG. Thanks, Richard
Thank you so much for sharing your Long EZ build. I acquired a half finished one last year & plan on finishing it this winter. Please continue sharing the great content!
Thank you for the kind words. Were you able to get a copy of the plans and instructions?
Thanks for posting!
What Mah battery do you use and for how long does it fly with that battery? I just received my CRM2208 from AliExpress. Need some tips, or just make a video!
I’m using two 3 cell 800 mA for each motor with JST connectors. I’m using two 25 amp castle creation ESC ‘s. I then connect the speed controls to the receiver using a Y-harness. Keep your throttle trim centered. Flight time is about 8 to 10 minutes.
Is that a Pond Racer in the background? Who makes that?
Not looking too bad after all these years.
