Copy: Sad but he could be one of the greatest: Ottavio Bottecchia. As an Italian I'm proud to remember the great champion Ottavio Bottecchia (1.18). Bottecchia was the first Italian to win the Tour in 1924. He won in 1925 too and for his temper become a hero in France. Sadly, Bottecchia died in 1927 in mysterious circumstances. He was attacked while he was on training on a solitary road by someone who was never identified and died days later from the injuries.
Jacques Anquetil France and Eddy Merckx Belgium have similar cycling style... seems to be a winning style... ;)

The best nr 13 ever. Yes, he was the best, even better than Brian O'Driscoll believe me.
Imagine if it was the other way, off a mountain.
Im surprised that front spinergy dident colapse before that accident
Everything looks better and righter for cycling and racing once you go back past twenty or 25 years. The bikes, the frames, the pad breaks the profiles, bike helmets only when you want to, otherwise caps or bareheaded. It's a pure cyclist look. An old school look. It's a look I strive for in some ways, although I've never gone for sunglasses in sports.
Legend
Happier days.
Can we please bring back the straight up unhinged Tour de France? I feel slighted having missed the age of racing when they ransacked convenience stores for alcohol and cigarettes.
And caught trains to win stages. If my memory serves me right the youngest ever tour winner was 19 years old. After he was promoted to victory as some of the guys cheated by taking the train to their destination. No tv cameras back then. 😂
Yup. Real riders don’t need helmets.
Hell yeah, real riders can't get traumatic brain injuries!!!
That’s ace says it’s the last dangerous day whilst on handed with no lid on 😂
RIP - it's sad when they go young like that.
Are you talking about the bike?
No helmet, all gas no brakes.
No helmets… strong times
Real men of genius
Met this guy in 1992 in Spain.. extremely arrogant man no manners and an extremely large chip on his shoulder regarding rides with more talent than he had .. glad he's out the sport
With a mere 700 kms to go, he's already looking forward to Paris.. ;)
I am stunned that they did tdf without helmets back then..
shared his sandwich
top aussie
The times of no helmets. Nowadays everybody is paranoid about everything.
And the guy next to him taking a smoke
No one was smoking..
Looks like Sean Kelly..
It was the rear wheel’s fault
Not gonna ride with disc wheel ever again outside of velodrome
He did what I used to do when falling from a push bike.Jumping off and use my shoulders to land.Is painfull and protect one from head aches ..but of course you need to think fast .
Phil Liggett Always doing a great job commentating Le Tour
Weird to see pro cyclists without a helmet
No helmets...imagine that now. The good old days. Unsafer but less stressful lol
How is wearing a helmet “stressful”?!
@@johns3106Are you kidding? Wearing a helmet is annoying to say the least, so stressful indeed. You must have not ridden in those times without them. I loved those times add sometimes I do not wear it. Who wants to have their noggin compressed while trying to pedal a bike as fast as possible??? Nobody in their right mind.
Actually, since helmets, riders increased their risk by riding more dangerously thinking they are 'protected'. It's way more aggressive than it's ever been... and that's a BAD thing.
@@nitramluap You have a point but I wouldn't go as far to say that the helmets are the cause. There are many factors that force a rider nowadays to be much more aggressive fighting for that contract.
Helmet was invented in '93
Eh? I had a Bell biker in 1980.
