What a match as incredible a comeback this was for Wigan from 2-0 down to 3-2 up and right back in the fight for survival. West Ham was the story as this result sent them down and you couldn't deny that it had been coming because the previous season was a struggle under Gianfranco Zola only just escaped relegation mainly thanks to Scott Parker. But under Avram Grant they were woeful his record was woeful at the bottom yes with Portsmouth you could cut him a bit of slack because of the financial problems they had and entering administration but at West Ham he was shocking. There was a bit of false hope when they went on a 4 game unbeaten run in February which took them out of the drop zone briefly but they weren't good enough at all the only players that came out of the season with any credit were Demba Ba who scored twice here and Scott Parker. Defensively they conceded 3 goals in a game 13 times across the season it was a clustefuck which resulted in Avram Grant getting the sack after this game and there's a story to that as well. The story as that Avram Grant got sacked by David Gold and David Sullivan in the tunnel of the DW Stadium minutes after the game not only that they told Grant make your own way back to London wasn't even allowed on the team coach. Scott Parker had to have a word with owners to allow him on the coach eventually Parker grabbed him and said "look boss your coming home with us we're going back together" and smuggled him onto the coach. He had his faults did Grant Julien Faubert wasn't exactly complimentary about him in an interview by The Athletic but he didn't deserve to be treated like that.

Wow! Alan Green and Mike Ingham had been commentating longer than I thought when I came across them in 1996 with 5Live. Legends! Watched this game in the Gambia and England had a better team but were just unlucky.
