Part4 - Catamaran houseboat cruise on the Hiwassee River. It didn't go completely as planned.
A cool and cloudy day on the river. We didn't reach our intended goal, but sometimes you have to go with the flow, literally.

Part3-Cruising downbound to the mouth of the Hiwassee river. Houseboat Adventure on Tennessee Rivers
มุมมอง 3.6K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Locking through the Melton Hill dam early in the morning, we make our way south, back down the Clinch to the big river. We anchored overnight in the beautiful FooShee Bend area of Watts Bar. Next morning, we meander down river and lock through Watts Bar Lock, then take a little side trip up Sewee creek for lunch and a walk. We continue down river to the mouth of the Hiwassee spending the night ...

Locking through Melton Hill dam early in the morning gave us an entire day to get as far up the Clinch as we could, around 35 to 40 miles. Returning down stream on the following day, we anchored out a pleasant and quiet cove just above Melton Hill dam where we would be set to make the two day downstream run to the mouth of the Hiwassee. #houseboat #houseboats #tennesseeriver #tinyhouseboat #riv...

We're embarking on the Little Tennessee river on Tellico Lake. In this video, we travel down river to Fort Loudoun Lock and Dam. Locking downbound, we'll take the Tennessee River downstream on Watts Bar Lake then head up the Clinch River to get staged for locking through the Melton Hill Lock in a couple of days. Lots of large thunderstorms threaten, but with luck, we thread our way through the ...

We are nearing the final leg of our trip. Still facing headwinds from Hurricane Ian as it moves north up the east coast. Calmer weather is on the way, just in time for us to reach our home port in a few days. Today's trip will take us from Chattanooga to the mouth of the mouth of Hiwassee River where we plan to hang out a couple of days. #houseboat #adventure #houseboats #tennesseeriver #tinyho...

We're facing some high winds again today, a result of hurricane Ian flanking us to the east. At least the air is cool and dry under deep blue skies. After some excitement in the Nickajack lock (we got hung on the wall), we are treated to a pleasant journey through the Tennessee River gorge We plan to recharge in Chattanooga for a couple of days before heading north towards our homeport. #houseb...

Hurricane Ian is currently exerting a significant influence on weather conditions in the Southeast, introducing a refreshing shift in temperatures. However, the relentless wind has emerged as a persistent challenge, intensifying as the storm advances towards the west coast of Florida. Daily northeast winds are now reaching speeds of up to 30 mph, accompanied by even higher gusts. This, coupled ...

We faced a severe early morning (1:30am) storm from the west that kept us alert during the early hours. Luckily, we managed to reset the anchor and finally got some sleep around 3 am. Later in the morning, more storms arrived, making us navigate through heavy downpours while following tow boats moving upstream. However, by the day's end, we were treated to clear, cool, and dry weather, finding ...

Imagine waking up at 4:30 in the morning, only to find yourself tangled in an unexpected traffic jam. But hold on-it wasn't on some regular road; it was a traffic gridlock on the river! Over a hundred boats jostling for position, all geared up for a Bass tournament departing from the Florance Harbor Marina. And guess where we needed to be? Racing toward the dam at the crack of dawn! มุมมอง 5K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
A couple of extremely hot and humid days have us planning to lay over at Pickwick State Park Lodge for a couple of nights to beat the heat. The days are okay on the water while you are underway, but the humid west Tennessee nights are tough on old folks like us. Getting there was a challenge, however. Things happen in slow motion on the river though, with plenty of time to think things through....

Beautiful boat! I just got one 1995 Lil Hobo that I am working on to convert to 100% solar/electric propulsion :)
What a great set up! Do you ever use trailer the boat and use as an RV only?
Thanks! We have used it as just an RV but only once. Before we ever got it on the water, we did a "dry" run to see how things performed.
What navigation app do you use? Im curious and find your videos intriguing. Is it possible to travel fron Tennessee to Florida on rivers/lakes?
Hello Charles, I generally use my Garmin chart plotter along with the Active captain app for most navigation, along with printed river charts as a cross reference. I the following videos of this trip I briefly discuss some of the other sources I use. You can't travel directly to Florida on rivers from here, but you can VIA the Intercoastal waterway. It would be great to have a director to Fla River route.
When will part 5 come out? I love your adventures.
I hope to get another one posted here in a week or so, Bobby.
👍👍👍👍
Enjoying all your videos, God Bless👍👍👍

Enjoyed the video, thank you for posting it.👍👍👍
Cool I am in Camden Kentucky Lake
Was born in Chattanooga, just retired and moved back. Really enjoying your video's 👍👍👍👍
Great town. I'm just wondering if all the muddy water and debris from the Helene floods is getting down your way yet. It's still pretty bad up here, all sorts of stuff in the river.
Just discovered your site, really enjoyed this video. You have a new subscriber 👍👍👍
Thank you, Harold!
Well done! Running late made for a beautiful sail into your anchorage.
:)
Thanks.
Great video guys... beautiful spot, The older guild books are trip inspiration 😊
Hey thanks Martin. You keep them snakes at bay over there, we don't need them over here:)
Grew up at Pickwick,Counce and Shiloh. My family moved to area in 1960 to help open the Paper mill. . Love the river. Now in Memphis. Muddy Mississippi is just not the same a the Tennessee river. Enjoyed ❤️
My dad fell from fishing on the rocks below the dam at Pickwick and broke his neck in 3 places. Lil volunteer fire dept did a great job and he lived several more years. Died at 93. Everyone in the area knew him. He always wore a suit and loved to tip the waitresses. God Bless you on your journey.
Glad you enjoyed it, Vicki! I have a niece that lives right there on the river near the BPS Pyramid. I wish we'd have figured a way to stop at Shiloh.
Thank you so much! 93 years, that's a pretty good run.
Thank you for another great video, helping me get through my trying and difficult times.
You are so welcome!
Your wife looked so relaxed after getting dinner headed to your over night anchorage! I think I have problems not fall a sleep going down the river after a meal. What a beautiful sunset.
Lawrence, wanting to dose off is a problems at times. It hits me after lunch, you get on a peaceful stretch of river and the drone of the motor and the gurgling of the water at the bow can send me into a stupor. We've had to drop anchor many times for a nap.
@@justkeepgoing Sounds wonderful.
Excellent video - Thanks!
You videos look and sound great on my 65" TV. I've seen Calhoun and Charleston from the road, but had no idea that they dominated the Hiawassee. Thanks for sharing this!!
Hey thanks for that input. I was wondering how it would look and sound on a big TV. Thanks for watching!
Man been over the 75 bridge 100s of times. How many miles did yall go up the river? That looks like a good Jet Ski trip....
It was about 27 miles from the mouth were we started. I 'd say with a jet you could add another 14, which would put you up at the Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park.
Would have been interesting to see the drone fly over the area you didn’t feel comfortable. Use it like a scout and zoom in on possible hazards. Nice trip ! I am super jealous
I have done that before, Scott. In this case it was light rain and work load. In hind sight, we should have dropped anchor and studied it closer before heading back downstream. I just hate I didn’t get the video in that bend, it looked treacherous from our viewpoint.
As always looks like another great trip up and down the river I love all the detail you put in your videos thank you for that looking forward to part 5
Thank you, Lee!

Dang I was hoping you'd make the ocoee....
We'll eventually make it up there.
Fantastic trip. Especially being able to sit on front deck on autopilot and watch it scenery go by. Very enjoyable. Would you know what make or model electric steering that is? Did you install it?
It's an Intellisteer unit. I did install it. It's a little pricey, but it's been well worth it. Here is a link--> www.hodgesmarine.com/istinttypes-intellisteer-type-s-fstraight-shaft-helms-fcab.html?msclkid=4ff85bca7c6913bbefd53d44e229ee00&Shopping%20-%20All%20Products&Shopping%20-%20All%20Products

These are such wonderful videos!
Enjoyed your trip. Brought back memories, I did the same trip in 2018 on a 18' pontoon alone. Went from downtown Knoxville on Tennesse river then up to Cilina, TN on Cumberland. Funny I ran into many of the same problems you did such as the bass boats and the weeds. I am working on a way now to repeat the trip but on a much more comfortable vessel and with friends.
Hi Doug, that's a pretty good haul in a pontoon and alone at that. We wanted to start in Celina but I couldn't get my boat down that skinny steep ramp in Wolf Creek. Downstream at Roaring River, it was shoaled up from recent flooding in Kentucky so we had to settle for Granville. We're heading up Knoxville way here a few weeks. That's the only part of the Tennessee we haven't had the boat on (except below Kentucky dam).
I grew up at Pickwick/Counce. . In Memphis now. Will go back and watch your other videos. God Bless
Thanks for watching!
What kind of house boat is that?? What brand??
Hello Scott, its a Catamaran Cruiser. Here's a link - www.catamarancruiser.com/8x31-lil-hobo-trailerable
TN got 64k mile river ,,
That sounds about right. That includes all the small streams and creeks.
Yes, that’s river miles not square miles.
What a lovely little camper boat! It looks like you have a small outboard from e-propulsion as well, in addition to your 70-horsepower engine. I have one like that on my little boat in Stockholm, Sweden. It's not fast, but it's nice nonetheless. And quiet. Too bad that the season is coming to an end soon.
Thank you! So far, the Spirit has been a good motor. My only gripe is that you can't angle the tiller arm up and out like you can with most outboards. The tiller gets in the way on a small boat where you need to sit near the middle. I probably need a different dinghy. The season here doesn't end until late October, but we do get some fairly warm days during winter for getting out.
What did you do with truck and trailer after launching?
My brother drove the truck and trailer back to our home in East Tennessee.
I just subscribed today I enjoyed your channel so far!!!
Thanks!
A cow with a high fever will get in the water like that causing them to be in danger. Another great boating story.
I'm with you there, I think she was sick.
No matter how many of your vlog I watch I am still in awe how beautiful this part of the country is. A little Houseboat seems like an awesome way to experience it in a very relaxing way.
Looks like you change your motor from this old vlog! I was surprised how low the stern got in the water when you where launching Slow Mo!
The original motor was Nissan 90 2-stroke. The motor ran okay but having experience with Yamaha motors we wanted a Yamaha 4-stroke, just because it's smoother, quieter and newer. You can't launch on a steep ramp. There's a couple or ramps around here I can't use because I'm afraid it will flood the motor before it floats.
This is what my retirement will look like
I like the drone footage, and I'm going to be out there next year travel on the water
Thanks, Anthony! Something to look forward too.
Have you ever hit anything under the water
Hello, Anthony. In this boat, no, but we've had some close calls. We did run the foot of the motor into the mud once, however. We set my depth warning on our sonar at 5 ft. , Even though we have an 18inch draft (24inch if you include the motor foot), this gives an ample "head up" since we are usually just puttering along at 5-6 mph.
Does not seem to be a lot of traffic on your trips. The area is beautiful and your vlog are very peaceful.
There are some areas where the traffic picks up, usually around a popular marina or in places close to large cities. On this trip, once we locked down from Fort Loudoun, there was minimal traffic. Except for a Bass tournament on Hiwassee, we saw very pleasure boat travelers. Thank you for the complement. I try to keep them peaceful and relaxing because that's what traveling on the river is all about.
Curious what the total cost of your trip was? I am guessing about 80 cent to a dollar a mile. You only stay at Marinas a few night and parks to wash cloths so it had to be quite reasonable. What a wonderful trip and vacation.
You are close as far as fuel costs. Over all we were just under $1800 for the entire 30 day trip. This includes the three nights spent in the expensive lodges and a few great meals at marina grills along the way. I thought that was reasonable.
@@justkeepgoing I think it is extremely reasonable for such a incredible trip. Thanks for taking the time to answer.
If I remember correctly this was the only time I remember you anchoring near another boat!
Yes, this was the only time on this trip where we shared a cove with another traveler. We actually met these folks on this boat way back in Florence Alabama. They were doing the Loop but decided to take a side trip up to Knoxville. There is a community traveling on the rivers, and a lot of these folks cross paths many times over years of traveling the rivers.
I've been wondering, How do you get gas? Are there Marinas on the water ways. By the way I absolutely love your videos , very well done and high quality, Thanks for taking me along.
Thank you! Yes, Marinas are located all along the Tennessee and Cumberland. We have about a 140 mile range with our boat and most marinas are just about every 20-30 miles between. There are other ways to get fuel. If you're on a tight budget, you can locate service stations close to the river then dock or bank and carry cans. Thanks for coming along!
The over night stop in the middle was the best one yet.
