Jai Peshwa...!!!! Jai Maratha...!!!! Please go through the poem, if you like it:

😂😂 Just having fun!
In the video we talked about many promising technological advancements, consider an hypothetical situation in which a study shows that the major cause of climate change is a device(say mobile phone) which has become integral part of our everyday lifes. I cannot imagine going back to times when we had no phones. Do you think people will sacrifice the comfort of their phones for the well being of nature? What would you do?
I personally don't feel people will individually sacrifice to have an impact on climate. The technologies in the video are all techs that involve authoritarian support, not individual. Hence, we can assume that government can slowly change its backend with the latest techs.
Great work Bidhan! Here are a few questions that come to my mind after watching the video: So the trees are a major factor in renditioning our biodiversity landscape, that is they exist as not on their own, but in a symbiotic relationship with other species from both flora fauna kingdom as well, as we are genetically modifying plants such as tobacco to grew 53% more than their unmodified counter parts, we are basically conditioning the floral biodiversity through our genetic marks. So do you think that: (1) This kind of mass genetic engineering of floral species would lead them to a human constructed "artificial selection", as opposed to Darwinian "natural selection"? (2) This would result in huge loss of biodiversity across all species? For example, one concern that comes to my mind when thinking of overall larger trees is the well established difference between natural and human grown forests, where in the human grown forests, all trees grow at the same pace and extent, thereby leading to an only-canopy (larger) type trees to largely survive as the top of forest will effectively block small plants to grow under them, while the natural forests have trees of all sizes. (3) Do you think it is ethically considerate to have such genetically modification allowed? (4) Do you think the Gaia hypothesis will support humans in such a construction? (5)The plastic eating worms is a very promising technology! However as we know, that time equates to money, and the research on the worms is still pretty new, so do you think that that our current capitalistic model of economy could be incentivized to adopt and invest in this long-term tech?
Thank you Ayush. 1. Humans already meddle with the nature. We already are affecting evolution. Almost half the species have gone extinct. We need to apply and use our knowledge to help nature heal faster. But of course, your question is valid and if we are to use these trees, we must make sure to protect the biodiversity and not replace these trees. 2. Your concern is valid and that is why I strongly hope we use these technology to help nature and not replace it. With the advent of these trees, we also get hope for more resilient species, which survive in desserts. Those trees could help us reforest lot of land. This is exciting news because we now have ability of doing so, how we use it, that is on us. 3. I don't see any ethical problem here. If there are side-effects to these modifications, we would have an ethical question. However, we need to be considerate to the natural biodiversity. We must focus more on modifications which allow growth in desserts and barren lands. 4. I feel that humans are a part of Gaia and must not think otherwise. We are Gaia trying to heal herself with all our brains, evolved over millennia. If we have the ability to speed up evolution, using these abilities would be helping Gaia. 5. Yes. Plastic is one of the most used things. In the long-run, if government mandates the capitalist framework to biodegrade certain amount of plastic, we can actually solve the plastic pollution problem.
Brilliant video with nice rendition. The inputs given are really eyeopeners, like the fact that the nuclear waste is recyclable, also wax worms and polyethylene! My questions: (1) Why most of these technologies are not made aware to the common people? Is there any politics behind? (2) What is the role of engineers, technocrats and students in general in creating such technologies and causing awareness about them?
Thank You Sir. 1. I feel more than politics it is the general awareness that hinders these technologies from reaching people. If and when any of these technologies come forward as a product, people would be aware. Sometimes it also is political, which leads to insufficient funding from the government, resulting in shunting of many of these small businesses. 2. Students and enthusiasts can bridge the gap between these inventions and general public. There are some *Science Fairs* in my towns, where people bring their inventions and tell people about it. Though it was a small scale fair, students today, equipped with all the technologies can conduct more fairs like this. And I have a strong feeling that this gap will be bridged soon.
Although genetic modified foods are showing promising results but they may start showing some effects after long time. So it comes with its own risk. What are your views on this?
Every scientific endeavour has risks. As for the trees or GMF, we will have to do more research before it reaches the consumer. These technologies are currently in the developing phase and would come in our life only after sometime.
If we hypothetically synthesize an enzyme capable of degrading plastic in lesser time, what changes do you see in the future?
If that becomes a reality, there is obviously a great potential for us to deal with plastic pollution. Moreover, the residue of these animal enzymes are reusable materials like vanillin. Oceans will be cleaner and we can keep using plastic, which is indeed a great invention.
Just to add on the burping issue, there are other advancements which converts methane produced by livestocks to vehicle fuel. Don't you think this is a better solution as we don't have to change anything in the diet of cow and the also get some useful byproduct
The diet upgrade is actually very cheap, so it won't be a big ask. Collecting and using methane sounds like a good idea when you have the required infrastructure. Here collecting from various cows might pose a problem. Until then, these pills would be very helpful.
If there are such great technological advancements, but still are not used on a massive scale. Why is that so? Anything other than high cost issues?
You pointed out right that costs and infrastructure development are the major reasons. Other reasons might include low investments, lack of support from government, cheap substitute and lack of information.
It's great that you are techno-optimistic; but like the failure of Snowpiercer, don't you think unintended consequences are always a problem?
Yes sir, that is true. There is always risk with new technology, because every new invention is born of things we don't fully understand. But as we also discussed, technology in itself is neutral, its use, or misuse is in the hand of humans. Snowpiercer was an engineering marvel, the only faulty piece in the Snowpiercer were the passengers. We must be smarter than them. I just like to be optimistic on the chance that we use all these technologies in the most optimal way.
Very good 👍👍👌👌
