Tom Knight performing The Brothers Johnson's "Strawberry Letter #23"

This is a slice of "Strawberry Letter #23" The Brothers Johnson version. To me, this is THE funkiest tune ever recorded. Shuggie Otis actually wrote this song (and it's real nice) but Louis Johnson slapped this bass line and sent this version of the tune into a whole other dimension! I can only hope I'm doing him some justice here. Hope you enjoy! -Tom

Funny....I believe I went to high school with everyone of these characters......
SMHS Rules!!! 🙌🏼🥁🙌🏼
Muito bom
Obrigado! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
Excellent. Just like the album. 😮
Thank you so much!!! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
thats got to be the best cover of that solo. mesmerizing!
Thank you so much!! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
amazing
Thank you!! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
You owned a splash, and a china cymbal in 88 is mind blowing😂
Still do, LOL! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
Beautiful playing Tom! All the best to you!
Thank you so much! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼 All the best to you as well!
Curious, how did you superimpose your head onto Neil's body so perfectly for this video? Without a doubt, I have never seen such a perfect reproduction as this...with a few slight(!) embellishments near the end. This was bad ass Tom, very well done!
🤣Love that! Thank you so much!!! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼🥁
Welcome@@tomknightdrums! And don't let anyone try to tell you this wasn't perfect, they haven't a clue. I've heard this solo (by Neil) at least 500 times, I KNOW this solo. The ONLY thing wrong is where you had to place your cowbells...a little more difficult to reach them LOL
@@joconnell8145 Man, I really appreciate that, thank you so much!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 (Not lyin about those cowbells-whew! Had to be a contortionist 🤣🌪)
What is so incredible about this is not only learning & mastering such an unbelievably hard solo, but to learn it back in the day when you did not have the internet, isolated tracks, and programs to slow everything down step by step. All you had was the tape and record. Brilliance!!
RIGHT??
I wonder who his favorite drummer is? R.I.P. NEIL PEART NICE JOB
🤣Yep, he was my very first drumming hero! Thank you! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
@@tomknightdrums Yeah I was lucky to see RUSH 21 times in concert, even got NEIL PEARTS autograph, RUSH WORLDS GREATEST 3PIECE ORCHESTRA🥁🎸🎸🎙🎼🎵🪗 ROCK ON.
Oh wow!! What a TREASURE!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼@@KevinHudson-q7i
always loved that solo and you nail it dude!!
Thank you!! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
I am speechless. This is utterly brilliant. Never having seen Neil perform this solo, I’ve always wondered about certain sections. You’ve reproduced it near perfectly - and 36 years ago! Thanks for uploading… you’ve made an old drummer very happy! 👏👏👏
Oh nice!! Thank you so much for saying that!! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
@@tomknightdrums Most welcome! And, as no-one else has said it, we need to give the cross-body cowbell craziness a big shout-out... I don't think you could have stretched any further - mighty impressive!
Neil would be proud!
Thank you so much!! He was my very first drumming hero! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
Wow! Playing, sound and touch totally spot on!
Thank you! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
Holy crap dude! That was mind blowing. I've been a RUSH fan since A farewell to kings came out and this is the best I've seen of people covering Peart.
Thank you so much!! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
Awsome!! That’s actually circa 1981.😊
Thank you! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼 (True! I prolly should've clarified that in the title, as '88 was the year we shot this vid 😅)
Criminy that was amazing. I don't know you can know how to play all that and remember it. I couldn't begin to decipher all his beats and hits. And you didn't even have the internet back then to watch or read the notes. Somebody needs to find the zoom out button though.
🤣My tiny bedroom back in the day...and yeah, that camcorder was one of those big ones that would sit on your shoulder, LOL!! Thank you for the kind words!! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
Neil...Is that you??? Awesome!!! STILL wish we had footage of that solo. Why did they cut it from the dvd????
Oh thank you!! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼 (Right?!?)
Man, no words!!!!! Absolutely incredible!!! Perfection in the smallest details!!!! You reproduced the solo with 100% accuracy, including the 'impossible' part of the concert toms!!!! Exit Stage Left drum solo is, for me, the greatest drum solo of all time. It's not a drum solo, it's a concert...it's pure Art, like a Bach composition. 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much!!! I'm with you-his solos were always amazing compositions, weren't they? 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼🥁
Agrred, I think it’s the greatest drum solo of all time too. And this is as great a cover of Neil’s work as I’ve ever seen.
Thank you so much@@funland108! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
The Sickest part about this is that this was Back In The Day. That album came out in 81, So for you to have it down cold, as a kid, in 88 is just about as Bad Ass as it gets.
Oh man, thank you so much for that!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🥁🥁
Holy shit if I couldn’t see then it’s Neil him self an absolutely stunner
Thank you so much!! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼🙏🏼
Wow man. I’m a young drummer and plan on learning this solo in it’s entirety or possibly the 1988 version of yyz. I know it’s been a while but do you remember how long it took you to learn this? Also do you remember your method of learning? Did you maybe just play along to it over and over or did you learn each phrase and then slowly put it together. I would love some advice you clearly know what you’re doing
For sure! It took quite a while-two or three years, if memory serves. Part of that lengthy duration was due to my not understanding what I was hearing and having to figure that out, but another part was not having all the requisite pieces of his drum kit. (No one I knew ever had that many drums, LOL) But as far as learning it, I was lucky enough to have an old school turntable that had 4 speeds on it: the usual 33 1/3 and 45 for 12" albums and 7" singles, but it also had 78 and 16 - both OLD old school speeds no one used, even back then. So I put my 12" Exit Stage Left record on it and set it to 16-essentially half speed-and just worked through it. As I added components to the kit, I'd work out those parts. A long effort, but totally worth it!
Thanks for the explanation Tom. That’s real dedication to your art. 💪👏
Any time!!
Bad ass@@tomknightdrums!!
Thank you!@@joconnell8145 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
Awesome 🤘🥁🎶
Thank you! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
Incredible. You nailed it. Bravo! 🙌
Thank you! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
I’d say if you just didn’t rush the phrases and held it back a bit, slowed it down just a touch, that would be the closest thing to Neil Id ever heard on TH-cam. That’s the thing with his drumming - people rushing his phrases. A little more spacing would make this brilliant
I appreciate the feedback, thank you! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
This is actually brilliant 👏
Thank you! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
Love it Tom!! Your one bad man
Thank you!! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
Damn! That was pretty darn close 👍👍

That was outstanding! The concert tom section was killer.
Thank you so much! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
@@tomknightdrums You’re welcome!!
AMAZING!!
Thank you! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
I never could get that solo completely down. Nicely done indeed. Bet you were thinking now I need to go take another shower after playing that LOL 🤣🤣
Thank you so much! (Yes-especially hot in that old house, as it had no A/C 🥵🤣)
THAT...............was incredible Man!!! I've listened to Peart's drum-solo so many times in the 80's,90's,2000's and even NOW,that I've literally memorized every single beat, cymbal & tom hit, etc. during it's duration, and You did it flawlessly!!! Job well done Sir!!!
Thank you so much!! 🙏🏼🥁
Killer playing.
Thank you!! 🙏🏼🥁
nice singles rh rf... nice and fast...sounded clean
Thank you! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
🤣🤣
I don't understand the mask underneath the mask ~ difficulty level 12 ... asphyxiation ?
I was trying to hide everything, including skin color. Some camera angles revealed my neck, so the blackout cloth became necessary, and yeah-def couldn't see very well, although breathing wasn't an issue (although it was hot!) 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
Clicked thinking wouldn't be that cool....boy, was I wrong. That groove at the beginning got me moist
Glad you like! 🙏🏼🥁🙏🏼
