My name is Alan, the aim of this channel is to encourage others to enjoy the waterways as they are places for exercise, inspiration and just great fun. I give useful tips and insights into how to restore a Cabin Cruiser, what types of materials to use, how to get the outboard engine serviced, how to rewire, install new batteries, gas equipment, a fridge, a shower unit, windows and restoring the original gel coat. I share with you some of the journeys that I have made and the issues for solo boaters. As well as the technical stuff there is also loads of pictorial information about routes which is presented in a colourful and imaginative way through music, art and poetry. So why not subscribe to my channel and enjoy the journey of discovery with me. I have separate playlists where I have made visits to boat related places to add to the whole experience and one of kayaking.

Hi Alan Im not sure what a mummy bag is? Is it like a sleeping bag. Your little room is going well. Looking forward to your Ashby trip if weather is better. 20.23 😊
It is a sleeping bag shaped like a sarcophagus which makes it lighter weight for backpacking etc. The weather forecast is looking promising. Hope you are all ok.
Two hot water bottles (the furry ones are the best), two duvets and the cat and you'll be as warm as toast all night.
Sounds like you’ve got it sorted. L would love a cat again had four at one time.
Another pleasant production, thank you.
Our pleasure!
Hi Alan I think our little boat wants a good clean when we get back, it looks like your boat green, i gather Sawley marina has got high water up to the pontoons. 😢 You have been doing a grand job with your little room. Good old Wickes.! 😊 14.43
Just an fyi - if you place your pins from right to left rather than north to south you can sew straight over them then remove after it’s completed. Makes the job much quicker :)
Hi Alan It looks a lovely big area for your caravan and Sandy to run around. 😊 13.43
@@PennyJohnson-km1fh Yes we were very lucky to find it as they are as rare as hens teeth. It wasn’t cheap but we thought we would treat ourselves. There are two acres of enclosed land for Sandy to run around. Water levels are a bit iffy at the moment around Sawley.
Yes footage can be a real problem when you are a one man production. I try to really only film things once (if I can help it) and only what I'm sure I am going to use. So easy to end up with way too much footage which can really slow you down. Sometimes in the edit, the more you cut the better it gets :)
Very true!. I would love a production team to come up with the different angles etc. one thing that I have got much better at is driving the boat in reverse so I can re take something. Thanks for subscribing and commenting. Alan.
Happy New Year to you both! It great that you have done a recap on your trips. See you back on the Swamp Duck. 😊 16.32
@@PennyJohnson-km1fh thank you and happy New Year to you too.

Many thanks for this Alan, I’ve only just by chance seen your comment on FB, so very sorry for the delay, I have now responded to you. Have a lovely Christmas 🤠🎄
I miss my little boat
Hi thanks glad you are enjoying them. Like you when I was looking for cruiser vlogs I struggled as there are very few. With regard to live aboards on grps there is one site that I followed. The guy has since stopped posting but his stuff is useful however the language is a bit colourful at times! It is called Aussie Boater. He also started a facebook group called The Yogurt Pots which I think is still going and there was an off shoot group called yoghurt pots r us. I will check through some more sites I have followed for you.
Not sure about the AI !
Hi mate. Recently found your channel and subbed. Enjoying your videos. I'm hoping to get a cruiser soon for next year. Struggling to find GRP channels on TH-cam. Can you recommend any..? Particularly live aboards. Thanks
Ok there a couple more TH-cam sites Phil Murphy a guy rebuilding a grp, You, Me & Margi Bee cruising vlogs. For technical stuff you can’t beat Dangar Marine hope these helps. If you need any help please feel free to ask. Alan
@TheBoatingAdventure thanks Alan. I'll check them out. Cheers
I'm on jetty B, nice clean boat
@@trevorfry452 thank you, be good to bump into you.
Hi Alan The dash looks good now, and the vent . The plate which is a bit of boat history. Good tip about the can of air as that happened to us and alarms came on. You have been busy with jobs. We have to give our boat a wash she's going green. 😢 Enjoying your tips. 😊 13.46
Hi. Been trying to make the most of the time whilst I’m not doing any major trips out. It’s amazing how quickly the green stuff can build up. I try and keep on top of it. Thanks for commenting Alan.
Nice job with the brass plate.
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi Alan The Ashby does look high, you did pick a nice day to start with. Your varnishing will look better and make it ligher inside.😊18.00
hi yes we've been lucky the last couple of weekends - I'm still at it almost done all the scraping and varnishing - beginning to put things back and kit it out.
Hi Alan It was a good tip with hose to clear your engine and tell tale, we had the same problem with our boat its alarm went off and we stopped and we had some nice man with a hose at a very posh house to help us. 👍 😊 to go on our travels. 17.00
Witam, mam ten model lodzi samodzielnie ja wyremontowalem od podstaw, zostawiłem tylko skarupe reszta zrobiona od nowa.Obecnie pływam nią za co mi się odwdziecza przyjemnoscia plywania.
Well done. Greetings from Jetty b
@@trevorfry452 hi thank you. I’m actually on the boat tonight. Been doing some re varnishing on the deck.
Hi yes it can be tricky sharing locks. If there is a ladder towards the back and the boat you are sharing with is about 45 ft or less it can be ok so long as a steel boat has a centre line on to stop it drifting and the paddles are opened slowly, but I much prefer the single locks or to be on our own. Alan 😊
Hi Alan Yes we have been in a lock with 3 cabin cruisers, which i have not seen before, it took some doing, we like your boat are small. 😊 Some narrow boats don't like going with us either, not a problem. Love the cafe boat. Looks like you speeding along with the wind. 14.20
Thanks for the Gastro tips ,the ships rations didn’t look too bad 😊Don’t blame you for wanting to do the locks singly, always a worry with steel boats.
@@AnthonyCarter-g2o Hi thanks for commenting. Tasted better than it looked. We had a very scary experience in those locks last time with a boater whose centre line looked like a piece of washing line. So I’d much rather do it singly even if takes a bit longer. Take care. Alan
Hi Alan Your second video of Leicester looked very scenic, i think been in foxton locks a long time ago in a hired boat. Not done it in our little boat yet. Not another poorly boat its sad seeing them. 😊 15.25
Hi, yes the Leicestershire Countryside is stunning and very quiet. Hope you get to do it. Thanks for keeping the comments going it really helps. Alan
It’s probably best done either side of the school holidays. We’ve done the journey four times now. Never moored overnight as yet. The Leicestershire Countryside south of the city is beautiful as you will see in the next video. Thanks for your comments, keep them coming I do appreciate your feedback . Alan ❤ 8:24
Hi Alan Your trip to Leicester looks ok, we have not been all the way in our little boat yet. Perhaps next year now. Thanks for video given us a view of what to see. 😊 18.55
Looking forward to it.
Hello Alan, Just a note to say how much I enjoyed this episode of your vblog. Life affirming is what it is. Our yoghurt pot journey is just beginning. We are purchasing a Viking 26' centre cockpit (in rough condition). So, we will be glued to your channel.
Thank you very much. Sounds exciting a Viking 26 a lot more room. I hope you really enjoy it. Alan
Hi Alan & Steve , I hope you are both well, just watched this vlog as I do all of them, have to say this is one of the best you have done, loved the bit of you going up the Soar with the lovely song playing, (summer love) I need to get the same work done to my boat. Engine service and anti fouling, I am moored at Redhill Marina and would be very interested in the cost where you went, my Engine is a 15hp Suzuki and boat is 20ft so very similar to the Swamp Duck. Please keep the vlogs coming.
Hi Rachel thanks for your encouraging comment. The cost for the anti fouling which included taking the boat out of the water and yard space etc was £600, the cost of an engine service varies according to the service cycle. Last year it required just a simple service which cost £59 wheras this year was more of a major service over two days so more bits required and cost £98. in total for all the jobs I paid £838. I had the anti fouling done about three years ago at Sileby Mill and that cost £500 then but only had two coats and no primer. I would recommend Harris and Sons as they have forgotten more about outboards than most people know about them. Alan
@@TheBoatingAdventure Thank you for letting me know, that sounds a reasonable price and I will be getting intouch with them for a quote 😀
Hi Alan Glad to see you on your boat again going to places we like too. Going up the trent and mersey to fradley then on to great haywood. We did Loughborough. Saw radcliffe lock with all the equipment they need. Enjoying your videos. 😊 18.48
@@PennyJohnson-km1fh Hi gonna be back on it next week too and looks like the weather might be ok. Happy boating.
Hi, I'm new to your channel. Really like your videos. I'm intrigued at the reference to the Lisbon House? Could you clarify...are you in the UK? Cheers 🍷🍷
Hi yes I’m in the UK. I live in Lisbon House which had strong ties with Lisbon and Portugal going back 50 years.
Thank you it’s a great finishing touch.
Nice to see the Relcraft logo on show! Lovely job.
A Dandy was my first boat in 1990, I now CC on my 56ft narrowboat
@@talesfromthetiller You still see a lot of them around in various states of repair. I love the way that no space was wasted.
How are you getting on with the Tohatsu? I've have a 20 hp on my fishing boat and have been really pleased with it. Very economic.
I have been very very pleased with it, as you say it is very economical and has meant that we can go much further without worrying about the supply of petrol. It goes for its service next week so it will be interesting to see how many hours it has recorded since the first service. cheers Alan
@@TheBoatingAdventure I do my own maintenance. Mine gets a harder life out on the sea.

It was a longish day took about 7 hours that day. Some of the Oxford canal is very remote.
Hi Alan The oxford canal looks lovely, wow all those locks, how long did it take you.? 15.35 Sun.
Hi Alan Your trip on the Derwent looks great. I used to sing in a choir but not as grand as that. We have just come back from the river Soar now the lock is fixed. 😊 18.00

Alan , good video sir, and definitely something I’ll need to think about soon, I like the idea of sending the old as a template and doing some of the work yourself as it will save money and of course give me some diy content for me to show so thanks… Send us some shots of your boat I’d love to put her on the channel at the end dear boy 😎👍
