Learning Houdini for 1 Month
I have prior experience with Blender, TouchDesigner, video production and software development. I knew Houdini would be challenging and had been putting it off until I felt ready. To fully focus, I took a month off and dedicated all day, every day to learning it. I originally included this context in the video but removed it to keep things shorter-maybe I should’ve left it in!
If you are a beginner, I think you can still learn it, just be prepared for a steeper learning curve!

I just wanna say thank you for making this. Your approach to learning and sharing that process is super inspiring, keep it up.
Welcome to Houdini brother, this is insane progress for 1 month. It took me several months until I actually started to get something out of Houdini. We will watch your career with great interest.
Wow that was a solid learning history! I think you learnt things that took like first 2 years for me in that just few weeks. I loved that you always look for the roots like documentation about origins and interviews of the people in the industry.
Dude!!!!!!
Dude!!!!
very impressive progress in one month! hopefully this will inspire others looking to get into houdini :)
Cheers dude! Love your stuff btw
Thank you for leaving all of the links in the description. I really appreciate the reserch you've done.At some point, I've found the CG wiki, too. It's such an amazing resource
It is very helpful!
good vid
wow, you go deep, a great way to learn anything
As an engineer I found the different effects you were experimenting with very interesting. They had an almost artistic abstract feel to them. Very cool.
Thanks! I do like the abstract stuff haha
Absolutely amazing. Ive been having an off and on relationship with houdini, Where i would try to learn it for a week and stop using it for another 3 months. You have inspired me to try to learn the program once again and this truly feels like a tutorial . Thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing. what a cool guide.
Amazing I want to learn Houdini, but it scares me a bit LOL but this video is so helpful.
Yeah for sure, it feels overwhelming at first, but it starts making sense after a while!
Wow... really, great job.
Holy moly dude, love the video. I'm so impressed that only you learned an incredible amount of stuff in just a short month but also went through the history and philosophy of Houdini and CGI in general. That's so much progress in just a month that would take most people over a year or two to complete. Also showed your organic journey from starting with Houdini and discovering its capabilities along the way and learning and making cool stuff.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah I think going through the history can seem like a longer trip but I find having that info and getting into the mindset helps with understanding things easier
Cool bro
You learned more in 1 month than most people do in 1 year. Bravo.
Man, you’re amazing-a quick learner for sure! It took me three months to get the hang of Unreal Engine. Thanks for sharing your journey; now I have a solid reference for the tutorials I need to check out. Honestly, finding genuine tutorials online is such a pain-most of the time, I just end up with some TH-cam "experts" instead of actual Unreal experts. 😂
Cheers! It's a big program! I find myself finding learning material a lot, which inspired me to make this video and share my journey. I'll add links in the description to make it easier!
Do you have a discord?
No, I don't. Is there something you were looking for?
I need a comment section champion who links all these videos he references
Good Idea, check the description, I added links! 🙂
@@FraztheWizard you are awesome thank you so much
No worries!
The hardest part of Houdini is affording it.
Haha true
The indie version of Houdini costs 400 USD for 2 years, that's like 17 dollars a month, price of a meal.
@@rano12321 with my $7 I’m almost there 🤣

Amazing video, thanks for sharing
This is a pretty good example of how effective deliberate practice can be. Thanks for the inspiration and push!
Learning Houdini is a long road that requires an enormous amount of patience and learning. Learning a software program in its entirety doesn't just mean understanding how to use it, it means being independent and knowing how to do something with it. Obviously, if you know how to rigg on other software and learn how to rigg on houdini, you'll be able to do some cool stuff. But I'm sure it won't be very interesting.
Absolutely, Houdini is an incredible software with endless possibilities to explore! With some prior 3D experience and solid teaching, I think you could get a good grasp of the core features within a month of dedicated daily study
This is a tutorial on how to go down the rabbit hole and really learn things. Amazing video!
A special point about the CGI hand is that it is the first instance of subdivision being used on a 3D model, as Ed Catmull and crew at OSU invented subdivision and created the hand to demonstrate both subdivision and computer animation. If you recognize the name Catmull, not only was he the founder of Pixar, but every 3D software that uses polygon subdivision bears his name in the title of the algorithm.
Yeah, super interesting! I actually spent some time reading about it, but decided not to include it in the video to keep things concise.
I think this is a bit of a misleading title. Just to preface, I think it is a great video and always love seeing people like you trying to introduce to (in my opinion) the best piece of 3D software in the world. However, In one month you can be proficient with one aspect of Houdini or have a general understanding of the core concepts of Houdini, but in no way will you have actually learned “Houdini”. The first couple of months is where you spend replicating tutorials, repeating workflows until it sticks, from there you begin to experiment on your own (where you will fail… ALOT), and then around 6 to 10 months in is where you begin to have these lightbulb moments, where everything begins to click. This is not to discourage people, on the contrary I think when you manage people’s expectations, they tend to stick around for longer. 6 years ago I started Houdini with the same energy as some commenters, thinking I’d be a master after a few months. You can cover all topics in a month, but in order for learning material to sink in, there is an enormous amount of repetition required. That said, if you haven’t already, start your Houdini journey and you’ll thank yourself later. This software is Pandora’s box, you get as much out of it as you put into it.
Yeah, that seems fair. I’ve noticed some people assume I’m new to 3D and that I’m claiming to have fully mastered Houdini, which wasn’t my intention. You’re right-the title could definitely be clearer, and I’ll consider changing it to better reflect the content. I actually took a whole month off to focus on Houdini, but I’ve been putting off learning it for a long time because I didn’t feel ready. I initially included a section in the video about my prior 3D experience but cut it to keep things concise. In hindsight, maybe it would’ve helped to leave that in. Thanks for the feedback-really appreciate it!
The learning curve depends on background a lot really. For example when I was learning zbrush it was quite a quick process down to a few weeks because I was already familiar with concepts of how geometry works in renders or simulations. I haven't yet gotten into Houdini but a lot of the concepts I've seen in Houdini are things that directly translate to stuff that I do within Touchdesigner. I could confidently say I could perhaps jump into Houdini and get going down within 2 weeks, but this is expected when you're in the creative industry for many many years, it just becomes second nature. Overall awesome video, it's nice to see other peoples perspective and journeys.
Absolutely! Being familiar with Blender and TouchDesigner definitely helped me get the hang of Houdini too. It’s fascinating to see how GeoNodes, Simulation Nodes, and SOPs have evolved from similar concepts. Glad you enjoyed the video
i could learn this in a week bro.. wats with you? wake up
maybe he was doing part time in learning this tool.. I also do this with my job...
This is a lot of progress for a month, more than my first month of Houdini. And most likely he also can't learn it full time. What were you expecting??
Amazing! So before learning Vex, did you have any prior programming knowledge?
Cheers! Yeah I'm familiar with three.js and slowly learning C github.com/FrazTheWizard/TheCProgrammingLanguage
This was an AMAZING video, very well said and just the perfect timing on every bit. Very proud of your progress. Make another video but for 2 months if you have the time<3
Thanks! I probably won't dedicate another whole month to just Houdini, but will use it in my next project for sure, might be able to breakdown some effects in a video.
Nice video inspiring and thanks for the resources
super nice ! thank you !
Glad you liked it!
amazing progress , still love to see content like this about houdini
hey cool that you found cgwiki useful! i'd just point out that i didn't make the holograms for avengers, that was a huge team effort, but in particular matt ebb did a lot of the amazing fractal work on that show, and he very patiently taught me and others the ins and outs of houdini.
Thanks for pointing that out, and apologies for the misrepresentation! I know how important it is for everyone’s hard work to be properly recognized, and I should have been clearer. I assumed that if people wanted to dig into it, they’d see you were part of a team, but I realize now that I could’ve been more specific. I'll make sure to phrase things more carefully in the future.
@@FraztheWizard All good! the old AL FX team know I'm a fraud anyway. :)
@@mattestela Haha, definitely not a fraud!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise
it takes time and patience to learn Houdini, 1 month is too short
Apparently not 😁 I guess it depends, if you already have prior DCC experience. I only needed a month as well to be up and running with Houdini. Not with all features, but still advanced stuff like the Muscle & Tissue system and CFX.
Absolutely! You could explore Houdini endlessly, but I think a month’s great for grasping most features, especially with prior 3D experience.
think that is up to the individual
