Hi Doug, First, this is a super high level analysis to teach fundamentals of buying inventory. In practice, the detail of a retailer's actual numbers would be finessed much more than what I'm showing here. Generally, I never work with Gross numbers. I prefer Net Sales Revenue because it more accurately tells me how much money my client should have in the bank! Using Gross Revenue doesn't translate at all to how bills get paid in the real world because the tax and discounts subtract from what actually sold and never land as CASH received. Also, using Gross Revenue to calculate how much inventory to buy will get you in a loop of being overbought and needing to take more discounts than I would recommend. The Markup (3x) is a very general assumption to get me close to the value of product I need to buy. Believe it or not, most retailers I hear from are re-investing all their Net Revenue back into more product. Not great. This at least gives a high level look at how to re-invest in a spend conscious way. Hope that helps you understand my process! - Emily
