Your engine is only as good as the oil you use. Poor maintenance equals premature failure and ultimately a short live engine with very low mileage. And last but not least how well was the vehicle design. If the engine is design poorly, and implemented. You will have a prematyure engine failured due to poor implementation of the engine layout. And the quality of material that was used.

Dear Engine Joe, This motor is the reason I haven't bought another GM. I was ignorant and bought an early generation 3.6. It was the worst motor I've ever owned. There might be worse motors out there, but not that I've owned. The fact that GM continues to produce this motor, and the fact that you say it's the 'future', tells me that I'll never buy another GM in my life. Doesn't matter how pretty an Acadia looks, when it has this piece of junk for a motor. People look at these things and act like it's a great achievement when it gets to 200k.

My Caddy engine runs great. Use synthetic engine oil and still change every 3,000 miles. Good mileage also. At first I did not like the engine shutting off at stop lights (red light) but now I like savings fuel because of it. As a factory service rep for two car manufacturers, I can tell you oil passages especially those for cam phasers are tiny. Change your oil every 3,000 or annually whichever comes first.

I hate the fact that you have to install mods on that piece of trash so that it doesn't enable autokill by default. There's no setting you can toggle so it has 'winter mode' eg keep it disabled.

Hey Joe I've heard from my mechanic who has done a ton of timing jobs on these that the mewest iteration of the phaser (DA/KA) use less oil pressure to operate and that the Melling pumps aren't needed. Is that true?

Probably highway miles? That doesn't amount to many engine cycles. Your timing chain is stretched, if you haven't done jobs on it. Do a timing job. I'm not kidding.

I've had over 20 vehicles in my life, and my 2000 Grand Cherokee is the one I've had the longest for the most miles. 249k and still running strong, never an issue. And yes, It IS better then a Jeep 4.0 which I had before. The only issue is if you over heat them. Iron block + alum heads. Not really the engines fault. Owners not doing proper maintenance or pulling over if a problem comes up. Easy to work on, plenty of power, silk smooth.

The GM oil life monitor has always been worthless. It's designed to keep cost of ownership during the warranty period low. GM also gets energy credits for the reduction of waste oil.

I bought a new long block from Powertrain Products that immediately started knocking. LOUD rod knock! Upon disassembly, I found that the crankshaft had been welded, and not machined properly. The connecting rods were not matched to the caps. The spark plug threads in the head were severely damaged. CRAP COMPANY that sells CRAP products. AVOID, AVOID!!!

Those motors aren't known for burning oil. You're thinking of a different GM motor. The motor you have is known for blowing up all at once without much warning due to timing break, or bending a valve

Hello from Montana, I ordered my engine just days before Christmas, it arrived from Texas to Missoula, Montana two days after the New Year. My Mechanic is now swapping the old for the new. He recommended Powertrain as he has had excellent experience with their products. Thank you to everyone at Powertrain...The "no fault" insurance policy is a clear indicator their products are the best Greg Nordin 😊

So ill say this. I Drive ALOT. My commuter car is a vw tdi with 405k. Many years ago. I made my first big boy purchase, a low mileage 2008 ram with a 3.7. All it needed to do was haul a fourwheeler and go out on dates ( it was just clean and pretty all its life) and then i grew older and the toys and work life got bigger. That 3.7 lived off the rev limiter. Just of 2 years ago, i sold the truck in beautiful shape. An original 3.7 that was worked its a$$ off, purred like a kitten, didnt burn a drop of oil, didnt drip any fluids, with 380thousand relentless teenager style driven miles. The old man still drives that truck with a smile. And i oughtta kiss that truck because ive assumed all these years that the 3.7 was actually a bad engine and i was just blessed. Maybe still the case now. I have a jeep liberty with a 3.7 with only 180k. Does have its obvious leaks i gotta fix. But it sounds and runs solid. I think the 3.7 and 4.7 are just those motors they really performed and lasted pretty well and got a bad rep from the small select numbers of bad individuals, all whole 300+ thousand mile vehicles wjth these engines... well people arent praising and yelling about the fact. Theyre just living life.

Lol, I have a 2010 Dodge Nitro with 285,000 on it. Yeah it burns a little oil, but I have a saying when it comes to this car, and that is “there’s 3 things in life you can rest assured on; death, taxes, and the nitro is gonna start in the morning.” The 3.7 and 4.7 are my favorite for the reliability hands down.
