Dev Talk & Tea - Hello Again
มุมมอง 209ปีที่แล้ว
Hi there, my name is Rhianne and I'm a game developer who likes to create cosy and fun content. I used to do something called Dev Talk & Tea when I started working in games but I only made 3 episodes before becoming overwhelmed. Now I'm ready to take another stab at it and use my free time to create relaxing content about game development, my day-to-day, and general nerdiness. SOCIAL LINKS HERE...
I am a Marcher so we like fighting, nonsense and farms. LARP is definitely better with friends. Weather wise Empire does seem to be slightly cursed we either get too hot or too wet never a British mediocre. The Marches has a little bridge over where our water pools.
This is so lovely! 🧙♂️
Thank you!
ive recently took up interest in this position specifically as a way to work in game design and was wondering if this position ends up working closely with concept artists or if there was maybe another term for someone who does both. i was a drawer before i took interest in game design and am wanting to work on narrative while still having a hand in the visual design: iyo would seeking a smaller studio where these roles are interspersed be best for that? (thanks for the vid also i feel like its helped me get some bearings, also is that kurama on your shelf?)
Hiya! So in my experience, narrative should work with the art team in some capacity, but a narrative/artist role that combines both doesn't really exist unless you're planning on starting your own team or working as a solo dev (I'm talking very small indie team 1-5 people). Reason being that both roles are usually full-time jobs that require constant attention, so having someone oversee both would not be fair on the individual and massively slow down development time. My advice would be perhaps start your own projects where you can do both or look at working for one of those roles full-time whilst exploring the other in a more personal capacity (working full time in narrative but working on art in your personal time or vice versa). Hope that helps!
Your video was super helpful to me thank you very much ☺️
Oof... that chin stripe makup is a social yikes moment... look up why if you haven't
Oh you could see the back of my bar
Ive got some good bags and pouches from Darkblade larp, they had a trader tent at E1 also, so you might find them at E2 also
In defence of the scam bag...in a real fantasy world, if a leatherworker made a mistake like that, they'd still sell it as that's precious materials they can't recuperate, and you got it for free. You could RP that you rescued a leatherworker's kid and they were so grateful the kid insisted on making you a gift. Silver linings and all.
That's such a cute idea!! Let's hope it doesn't fall apart :P
Love the video i'm trying to go back in larping myself and i can't wait ! btw where did you find that lilith statue ? :)
Thank you! We got it a few years ago during aa sale on the Blizzard store :)
Can you do a video going into more the basics of what astronomancy is at Empire?
I'm still learning about it myself but when I have a firmer understanding that would be an awesome idea!
Was hoping to bump into you but didnt seen you there, going E2?
I am!
Cant believe you disrespected my Tesla. 😂 Great video though.
I'm sorry! (I hope it's fixed).
No worries , lessons learned 😂
Lovely video! Lots of great tips :D
Thank you babe! ❤️
Golden Mochi strap poppers ftw
Hey Rhianne, great video! E1 was my first event I came and spoke to you I think on Saturday. I’m so looking forward to E2 and I’m hoping it is warmer.
Thank you friendo! I hope it's warmer too 😭
saw you at e1 and was abit shy to say hello. it was my first ever larp. you looked very wintermarky and on a mission but thanks for your content its helped me out loads
Aw thank you so much! I have resting wintermark face so please come and disturb me anytime haha!
Me and my gf have finally decided to go in 2025 and I’ve fallen deep into the rabbit whole. Patiently waiting for the 2025 tickets
I'll be joining the Navarr in E2 next month, so hearing your experience was great. I'm really looking for the Songs & Stories as it seems to be a legendary event at this point! Hopefully meet you on the field!
Navarr is great fun, I often visit there . Highly recommend the Goose , there's a good bunch in there :)
I really want to go to Empire as well! I’ve got a bunch of costume stuff but I don’t really know how it works and the wiki is really a lot to process. I’ve done LARP before so I’m alright with the fighting it’s just kinda overwhelming. Thanks for the video, it’s really helped understanding it all. :)
One thing I'd say is don't feel like you have to absorb even a fraction of the wiki - part of the fun is just experiencing the current lore and politics as you go :)
I'm so glad you had a good time. I was on that Goosewhisper vision quest too, apologies for giggling so hard, Nagas get super high on that stuff!
nice guitar
From us going for the first time at Empire, this has been really helpful from understanding someones first experience there!
My pleasure! I'm actually booked to come see you on Friday haha!
@@RhianneMurphy Awesome! We mid-way through packing everything.... im like where are my tent pegs...
@@KriosPhotography always brings extra!
I watched this while sewing my kit for E1 24 right now! Been playing since E2 2013 (I have a older brother who took me as a teen) and I was so cool hearing someone’s first experience of Empire! It’s good to see a fellow night mage! If you’d like to make a Urizen friend, or someone to guide you through conclave I’m happy to share my IC name ❤
Ah Thank you so much! I've not done any conclave stuff yet. What's your IC name, I hope we bump into each other :)
im pretty sure you blessed me before we went to battle? think it was like a purple mark?
Sorry, I don't think it was! I don't do blessings I'm afraid :(
@@RhianneMurphy must have been another blonde in our nation 😅
Where did you get the cool lantern!?
They come in a pair on Amazon :) just search for camping lanterns and there are quite a few I think
Heyo! Awesome video. Always awesome to see newer people talking about how they have got stuck into the game! I started Empire at the Winter Solstice, exactly 1 year ago now, I put off joining a LARP system as I do not have the social bravado I thought must be required. Eventually, over months. worked myself up to throwing myself at an event, solo. I immediately found amazing people in Wintermark and really fell into my character, My characters accent took ME by surprise 😂But has allowed me to throw myself into a situation that my normal self, Ab-so-lutely would not ahaha. My Wintermark character straight away had background options I had not even thought of before I started. None of your character really has to be strongly decided before starting, throw yourself into and then see where the river flows, is my advise to any newjoiners. It really is an amazing way to step completely out of your own comfort zone and become someone else for a weekend. Now, a year later, my character Marcus has been named twice in Wintermark tradition, and has stepped into the role of Warden of Wintermark!! Iv probably shouted at you in the moot square 😅(Sorry!!) whist sweating my tits off in furs with very much not-summer clothing. Empire is truely an amazing experience where you can do as much or as little as you want, and is a totally magical place to have some fun and make some amazing friends ❤ People will absolutely be in the same shoes as I was in tiptoing around coming or not, I emplore them to give it a go!! you will not be disappointed 🎉 And your always welcome to a drink around our hearthfire 🍻 Again, thank you so much for the video, and im sure it will help so many more take that first dive into the Empire world! Excited to see people in the comments taking the dive 😁🌟 See you all in the field!
Welcome to larp! I'm a long time larper but April will be my first Empire event having been convinced to go and this was really helpful ❤
Amazing! :D I hope you have a great time, maybe see you there :)
Glad to hear you're coming back, hope to see you there!
I love your description of On The Wall on the Saturday 😭 I play a Navarri character and though me and my friends don't really sit through the whole of Songs and Stories that is the one not to miss. This event I specifically remembered legging out of a portaloo from the other end of the woods when I heard it starting 😂
I too would leg it out of a portaloo for On The Wall
jeus. can't find any in norway
I said last year I was going to go but things got in the way, I'm going to try and make E4 this year. Cheers for making this video, it has given me an idea on what to expect, Also joining Wintermark 😊
Just got my winter ticket for the year, and thought id look for a video to send some friends! Marcher here, drinking singing, drinking, fighting and singing, followed by more drinking.
Thank you for your tips and a genuinely positive attitude. It's really thought out there, so videos like this mean a lot. Keep up the great work🔥
Great tips as always! Hard agree on the website clarity, relevant CV, and personalised, less cold-corporate cover letters 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thank you matey!!
Thank you so much for sharing! Super helpful and informative ❤ Me and some friends are starting in September 2024 with the Navarr so we may see you by the fire ✌️
Very informative! Love your chill video style. ❤
Thank guys <3
Wow, I just got a lot of useful information in a cozy atmosphere) Thank you for your video!
Those lanterns look amazing! Where did you get them?
I found them on Amazon! They're are super bright too.
Oh hey I recognise you my hall is camped by the mystic school we had fun watching you all do whatever it is you guys do lol
Oh nice! Maybe we'll see you there next time :)
@@RhianneMurphy yeah definitely recommend doing stuff for and with the shaman he’s a great roleplayer
I absolutely loved watching this and hearing about your experience!
Thank you so much!!
@@RhianneMurphy I hope you make more videos about your kit upgrades and/or your continued adventures at Empire!
The song that always concludes Songs and Stories is "On the West Wall" by Jamie Wakefield - it's on Spotify & Apple music. We (Navarr) really fucking love that song, I'm glad you felt it :)
Omg I'm so happy it's on Spotify! It was fantastic, can't wait to share it with my friends who come with me next time ❤️
Hey, myself and 3 friends are going in April for my first time. Also going Wintermark and trying to decide between healing or fighting 🤔 I will keep an eye out for you there if your going. The video was super informative thank you!
I can assure you, you can do both. You can either grab physik and chirurgeon to do herb healing on the field. You can also go Mage and pick up the heal, restore limb and purify spells to be able to do healing on the move (nothing scarier that a mage with a staff of imperial mastery though ;) ).
Look forward to seeing you there! Don't stress too much about getting your character build right first time, as first-time players can amend their skills after the first event (even during!) :) Go with what sounds good then roll with it!
Welcome to the hobby! So cool to see you had fun. Also great respect that you pulled this off on your own. really cool! I have some tips for your outfit: The entire fetaher setup is awesome! huge respect for that :) Also the makeup is really nice! love the design overall! But In your case I would exchange the entire currently black dress with corsage and all with something more ambient-fitting. You are trying to portray a fantasy middle age viking. So your garments look way to modern and clean. The black helps hiding that though. I advise you to use Linen-Fabric, or Wool. its not about the colour though, but about the fabrics texture. Its also not about it getting dirty and muddy, thats very cliche and mostly ahistorical. Its about making the things look worn, not like they are "fresh of the shelf" if you know what I mean. Its also not about the price. You can get very cheap linen and dye it yourself and sow the cloth based on the cloth you already have. dead cheap. I wish you the best of fun in the hobby. its really one of the best :)
I'm looking to update my kit for E1 in a couple of months, thank you for the advice.
@@RhianneMurphyI just want to put out there that you outfit was absolutely perfect for your first time. There is absolutely no point in investing in a bunch of kit before you know if you like the hobby! Empire is aspirational and generally doesn't encourage costume critique unless requested because it understands that people are going to make improvements to their kit over time, it's absolutely fine to start from bits of modern clothing and upgrade as you go x
I just found this channel through your Twitter. It says you are a narrative designer for Square Enix. I thought Square Enix was a Japanese studio and that they sold off the Tomb Raider and other Western IPs to Embracer? Unless I'm unaware of some Western games still under Square Enix's umbrella OR of course if you work for Square Enix directly in Japan, e.g. their Final Fantasy games. Can you tell what games you are working on right now or is it a unannounced project still?
Hello! Square has many offices across the world working on many IP's! I can't currently share what I'm working on but there are many western properties Square has published/worked on :)
@@RhianneMurphy I see, thanks for answering. I like your replies in the comment section, you don't beat around the bush and seem to give advice based on the industry practises. I look forward to see what you are working on in the future. Happy holidays!
If i may ask, and if you dont mind answering, what is your profession? im interested in working from home and i heard you mention you work in gaming industry? just curious, thank you for taking the time to answer me <3
also, beautiful setup! very inspiring for the theme im wanting to do!
Thank you!@@karalily. Yes, I am a game developer - currently a narrative designer.
Helpful, and spoken in a soothing tone. Thank you for the video. 👏 Any chance you do portfolio reviews? Asking for a friend, 😅
Thank you for watching! I'm not at the moment but please reach out to me in the new year via Twitter or IG and I'm happy to have a look :)
@@RhianneMurphy Happy new year 🎉❤
I used to go to Empire yeeears ago 2017-18, but I didn't really have friends going and travelling down from Scotland on public transport was long and expensive for a uni student, so I stopped after a handful of events, but this really made me want to start planning it again! I miss my Varushka! <3
There's quite a big Scottish contingent. Quite a few out of character "froth" meets in the central belt too.
@@jackbale4840 Oh really! I should try and look into it, it might be nice to go back to Empire, certainly if traveling down there with others 😄
@ltkaarina absolutely. We have a pretty big fb presence. Scottish Empire Travel Plans is a good one for organising lifts and stuff. Empire LRP: Scotland Froth is great for more general stuff. Hopefully see you back in the field soon!
Great video - There´s my subscriber support for you. Are there ANY links or examples of portfolio work - Literally what it LOOKS like? No one´s covered that part in anything I´ve watched. Most people I know have never had a ´thing´ published so how do people get something on screen into their portfoilio that is extracted from a game if they´ve never had that experience?
Thank you for the sub! So for narrative, there are multiple things you can show in your portfolio, mostly examples of writing. This can be in the form of scripts, any prose you have written, character biographies, or even any D&D Oneshots you have made! The other thing I'd highly recommend is and example of your writing in a game - solo projects, game jams, student projects, and even mods for existing games. It's one thing to be good at writing, but it's another skill to be able to translate that into an interactable medium. I hope this helps!
Thank you for the video. I would be interested how the Scripting tools, Final Draft, Articy and Celtx are used in practice. Right now it seems that Articy and Celtx offer a free trial version of their software.
Hi there! These tools can be used to write scripts for a game ☺️
