    Question: I thought that the lacquer was clear but you called it “gold lacquer”. So the lacquer of a brass trumpet is actually not transparent but has an opaque color itself like paint (gold), which means that when you look at a lacquered brass trumpet you’re not actually seeing the raw brass underneath? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

    On the instrument you used in this demonstration is that red rot or rust on it? With that much discoloration would such an instrument be worth salvaging because the metal might be very weak or very thin in those areas?

    Start with penetrating oil and be patient (hours.) You will then be able to pull the slide out with yer front teeth. Be patient.

    I needed some work done on my 1988 Cadillac, so I went to a local shop. The tech came out and asked me too raise the hood. Then I saw his huge belt buckle, like they have in Texas. "No thanks,"and I left immediately. Yes, this story DOES apply to this video.

    There is a trumpet with a main spit valve tube that jumps out when played. Would expanding the removable tube slightly be appropriate or what could work?

    Interesting horn. I would like to know the make model and serial number, please. Is Feree's penetrating oil a real deal maker? Leagues above 3-1 oil, Liquid Wrench, etc?

    What is the name of the liquid flux..is the powder flux more effective than the liquid flux..if I use butane flame can it melt it..to stick the broken thing I have to clean the surface so that it becomes copper or I continue to make connections..before I have make a connection but not successful..because it does not stick perfectly ..

    • @bandrepairdemosbymichaeldu8070
      @bandrepairdemosbymichaeldu8070 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Potentially, but if they are tight it won't work as they add pressure inside the tube. Unsolded and tap out is probably the fastest way, imho.

    very helpful, what's the part numbers on those two tube expanders you're using, the small and medium for inner and outer slide tubes?

    • @bandrepairdemosbymichaeldu8070
      @bandrepairdemosbymichaeldu8070 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. The expanders used are from Ferree's Tools Inc. Found on the web at www.ferreestoolsinc.com. The tools are N35 and N36 for small and medium. N37 is the larger one. They also have long versions as well, which are the N5 N6 and N7 units. Type in expanders in the search box and they will come right up.

    Thanks for showing the tool, but the extraction technique you use it's to rustic and ordinary Should be smoother in order to protect the instrument. Any ways thanks so much, because that give me a better idea to design other type of tool, in case if it not in off space to work. CHEERS!

    • @bandrepairdemosbymichaeldu8070
      @bandrepairdemosbymichaeldu8070 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tools are a bit more brute strength. On slides that are brutally stuck like this one was it was necessary. On instruments used daily you may never need this much force, but it's important to know that you can remove these severely stuck slides. Because of the taper and no locking mechanism hand strength is required. Gentle techniques require heat and patience, but results in burnt lacquer most of the time. This method minimizes lacquer burn with minimal harm.

    The expanders are our friend if we understand their purpose. It really isn't to expand but rather to true up the tube to it's original size.

  • @bandrepairdemosbymichaeldu8070
    @bandrepairdemosbymichaeldu8070 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are technically correct, however the only time you would use this method of expansion is when the client could not afford the correct repair of replacing the tube or was needed asap for some reason.

  • @joensab
    @joensab 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excuse my ignorance here, but if the outer portion of the inner slide has been 'over sanded', causing a loose fit...wouldn't the expansion of just a small section at the open end of the tuning slide effect the least amount of wave change due to tube size change...while still sealing for air leakage?

    • @joensab
      @joensab 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      as an after thought: is there a tool in this case that will evenly 'crimp (for lack of a technical term) a small portion of the outer tube/lead pipe at it's outer end to maintain pressure/lack of leakage while maintaining original bore throughout? BTW, an excellent educational video.

  • @McRaeStudios

    Thanks for the video. I never knew to pull the flux into the joint with heat. I always thought it to be for the solder only. This is much cleaner. awesome.

    • @bandrepairdemosbymichaeldu8070
      @bandrepairdemosbymichaeldu8070 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The heat also works well to pull in liquids to free up slides that are frozen. Kroll and liquid wrench are a couple of products for freeing up stuck slides.

      Gilberto Souza Thanks Gilberto, but this isn't my product. If you look up Thayer valves you should have some options to where to purchase them. The installation is fairly simple and good soldering is the key to having them work right for you.
