Spent a year in a half playing a bad dnd campaign, the DM would never listen to feedback. Started with 7 people ended with 4. Vet DM just wanted control more than anything. Long story short none of us hang out anymore...

I wish D&D wasn't the default roleplaying game newbies not only are expecting, but also won't have any flexibility on playing anything else, despite having zero experience with any RPGs. So many other options not only have better mechanics, but as far as combat mechanics go, D&D is probably the worst - no knockback/knockdown, armor penetration, etc.. You essentially hit or you miss. I remember hearing from a DND vet that, throughout their maybe decade of experience, they had NO good memories because they didn't enjoy the tables they were at and the people they played with and the hundreds of dollars they invested. It really shook me to my core, as I had only been playing DND for about a year at the time yet it thoroughly changed my life for the better in terms of making friends in my life. The distance in our experiences made me realize how self-destructive this hobby can be if you don't take it correctly. No DND is better than Bad DND.

I wasted many many hours on bad dnd. It started really good. But it got progressively worse. I and some co-players tried to talk to the GM. He always said he appreciated feedback - but if we gave it to him, he disregarded it, and suggested that we were the problem, or that 'he is no Matt Mercer'. Thats the thing... We didn't want a Mercer - but he tried to be one. That was the issue. Or that he disregarded the players wishes, backstory and own agency. Or clear preferential treatment. He made our characters fit his story, and couldn't take a no as an answer. And the story was filled with major characters from both the Sword coast and Mercers campaigns - which made sure to remind us how badass they are, and were not... Only that they essentially did nothing, and added nothing to the story. Once there was a point where the campaign could have ended, but no, that was just a red herring. I wish I had stopped then. The whole game devolved into some kind of arbitrary base builing game at some point. And arbitrarily we couldn't use some of our features for large swaths of the time. Then there were the battles. Don't get me wrong some strategic battles are fun. But it was basebuilding, invasions, bosses for some reason that wasn't clear to anyone. Than a year downtime - in game. We could either invest it into multiple not so minor homebrew feats, or choose to invest some quantity to build connections, research or progress to some personal goal. Everyone who didn't decide to pump it all into the feats and skills basically got a sh1t-sandwich, no matter how thought out their plans were. For large swarhes of the later campaign ability for casters were hindered or outright blocked. Like wildmagic affecting certain schools or during the next appearently final battle and the preperations before, teleportation (down to misty step) were blocked completly. Except for some reason the children critroles Percy and Vex were somehow able to teleport us the "final boss"... Which again, was another red herring, and the real BBEG and twist villain (that nobody cared about) used this time to achieve its goals. We then realized it, rushed to it (only to realize that it was to late) being monologued, given no chance (despite options being there) to intervene... And the villain fled to Tal'Dorei where we needed to follow. Thats where I finally gave up. Again, the only regret I hold that I didn't do it way sooner. My now DM and former CO-player in that campaing said it only got worse and he regretted not quitting as well.

I run somewhere between low combat and very low combat campaigns, so I like to give a lot of miscellaneous consumables. Varying potions, scrolls and I just create some fun stuff. A harmonica that gives +1 to every roll (old school bard song). I like to give stuff that encourages problem solving. Potion of flying, spider climb, water breathing, enlarge etc. Gave a shield that could use Produce Flame to a rogue. If anything that can be used exactly 1 way (eg weapon) that’s boring. Not in my game.
