How do you obtain a Statement of Demonstrated Ability? (S.O.D.A.)
มุมมอง 3.9K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Can you be a pilot without 20/20 vision? Other medical deficiencies? I'm Jason and this is my story of how I went about obtaining a S.O.D.A. I was never really able to find very much information about how to actually obtain one, so I wanted to put this out there. The whole process (from requesting the SODA to obtaining it) took about 6 weeks for me. Each individual process may be a bit differen...

I have been able to stay busy working as a CFI for the past 3 years. I am finally moving on to work for a regional airline this summer. If I can do it, you can too.

      Well I have R/G color blindness, hard to pass the Ishihara, very slight issues on the Farnsworth lantern, I still can see the colors and even will try to go to the ATC tower light gun test. I wanna get a 1st class, be an airline pilot. Will this be possible sir? If I fail the 1st can I still get a 2/3?

    • @jboyee01
      @jboyee01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes of course. It’s a checkride to show the DPE how well you can teach. And the majority of that comes down to preparation. Find lots of resources. It can be pictures, video, slideshows, use of a whiteboard ect. use them and show the DPE you came prepared to teach each lesson with a outline you can follow during each one. They will give you some time to set things up and prepare materials before each lesson. Good luck!

    I AM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS VIDEO. I grew up flying and always wanted to fly fighters in the military. I have amblyopia, which effects my stereoscopic vision, so my dream of being a military pilot was a nonstarter. I had always assumed that this also be the case in the civilian world, as well. All this bad news steered me away from chasing my PPL. I've been getting the itch to fly recently and just happened to stumble upon SODA. A quick YT search and here we are. I think I'll be starting ground school this year.

      Guys I'm hitting lots of dead ends and was hoping Jason and some other pilots here could help. I too have an amblyopia condition. Even though my condition is stable since childhood and they originally let me have a third class medical when I got my private, my recent medical recertification application was revoked by the federal flight surgeon. I wrote back when I turned in my medical certificate asking for an appointment with the local FSDO for a medical flight test. It's been over a month and I haven't heard back. The FSDO told me to contact the national office by phone, and I can't get through to them "due to high call volume". Does anyone know what I need to send and to whom to get the ball rolling on this? I don't want to wait forever only to find out I'm missing a form or something. My AME and flight instructor have no clue about this process. They referred me to another AME, and I didn't hear back from him either. I also contacted my ophthalmologist about Shaw Lenses. Even though they're listed as a Shaw vendor, they had never heard of them, and couldn't get through to them due to difficulties they're having apparently with the pandemic and the supply chain. Does anyone have contact information for a doctor or somebody who works with Shaw they could pass along? Is there are another lens provider that makes something similar? Any help you guys would be hugely helpful. Being able to see and fly again, it would mean the world. Reply here or email. I'm easy to look up on google as I think TH-cam just deletes links and email addresses here.

    • @omfgaduck
      @omfgaduck 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skiptalbot sorry for the delay in responding, and I don't think I'll be of much help, however. My best advice is to go speak to whoever you saw for your medical, or another local FME who will help you directly contact your regional Flight Surgeon, as well as your regional FAA office. My revocation was quickly handled by the Nashua FAA office, and if you're in New England, Dr. James Alban in Falmouth, MA is an exemplary FME who along with his secretary, will go out of their way to pester the local (regional) offices until they get some sort of response, or answer. I was initially declined, and they sent back a packet to have filled out by a more licensed optometrist than the FME, and that in depth exam sheet was all they needed in my case for my class 3, and they said once I have my private, in my own time while doing my commercial training, I can schedule the Regional Surgeon to come do an evaluation flight for a SODA that would permanently remove my amblyopic eye from being an issue, despite being at standards currently, as it may eventually decline.

    Hey! Quick question! So if I’m interested in starting flight lessons for private pilot license... should I start taking lessons and then apply for this certificate of demonstrated ability.. or should I do that before doing any flying lessons??

    • @jboyee01
      @jboyee01 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      CarlosLaraLife you definitely want to make sure you’ll be able to get (at least) a 3rd class medical certificate before spending a lot of time and money on flight lessons. Start by doing a bit of research on 3rd class medical qualifications in the Federal Aviation Regulations part 67. Then I suggest seeing your regular doctor for a check-up and let them know your plans to get a faa medical. Once you’re sure you’ll be able to pass the exam to get the medical cert, Then schedule an appointment with an AME to get your FAA medical. If there’s something that won’t meet the standards, they will defer your medical and then you can go about working on getting a SODA

      @@jboyee01 So then, this test was done prior to your training? Meaning: FAA medical (which I have done) -> identify issue (for me it's monocular vision) -> have form 8500-7 filled out by eye doctor (which I have done) ->contact FSDO to set up flight test -> meet up and fly on a rented plane ->hopefully get the SODA -> become medically cleared -> start flight training. Is this correct?

    • @jboyee01

      @@ivanh3 I held a 3rd class medical and completed private pilot certificate before getting the SODA. You wouldn't be able to show your ability to fly the airplane without receiving any training. if you can get the 3rd class and complete private pilot first that would be the way to go. Then, apply for the SODA and 1st class medical when the time comes that you need one. (i wanted to make sure i could hold a 1st class before doing anything past private pilot)
