A Deeper Dive: The story behind the fast-growing sandwich chain Cheba Hut
How does a pot-themed brand become one of the industry’s fastest-growing restaurant chains?
This week’s episode of the Restaurant Business podcast A Deeper Dive features Marc Torres, the CEO of the fast-growing sandwich chain Cheba Hut.
The Fort Collins, Colorado-based chain has picked up its growth in recent years behind franchising and strong average unit volumes.
System sales grew 29% last year, according to Restaurant Business sister company Technomic. Average unit volumes are well over $2 million, far higher than traditional sandwich concepts.
Marc discusses Cheba Hut, its history and performance, including why it generates those volumes. We also talk about franchising.
He also talks about the company’s pot theme, and how it convinces customers and landlords that it is more than that. Cheba Hut does not sell any THC, and Torres notes that its marijuana theme can only get the company so far. Ultimately its food does the talking.
We’re talking Cheba Hut on A Deeper Dive, so please check it out.

It's not cool to go to Chili's. And do they even sell chili? I've only been in one once, and only because I thought they did, and the only chili they had was on a burger. I forget what I got but it wasn't the chili burger. Red Lobster needs to take all the pain in the closings and start creating value. I was in one yesterday and felt totally cheated on portion size, quality, and service (the service I got was nails when I got it but man were they understaffed). They need to hire, buy some bigger shrimp, and make the biscuits big like they used to be. Nobody cares about gimmicks. The fastest way to chase customers away is to disappoint them with price manipulation that isn't seasonal; it feels personal. I frequently think about the Six-dollar Burger campaign by Carl's Jr. That was 24 years ago, when the burger at every bar was $6 and Carl was selling thickburgers for like $2.59 to mock them. A burger like that costs $15 at the average bar now. Probably the best burger deal I can think of today is at Longhorn Steakhouse, $10.95 for an 8-oz burger and fries (drink extra) at lunch. It seems steep until you try it; it's a truly great burger, and the fries are generally excellent, too.

Ive worked at subway 15yrs I've seen how brutally franchises have been battered because of promotions dealt out by subway 5£ footlongs was really brutal but the last 2 years has been crazy they keep remixing subs to see what sticks added more to the menu but still expect it to run on same amount of staff here in UK we've had so many sides added then taken away cheers balls one minute then gone crispers then swapped for waffle fries new fomulas put up for a month then swapped.Cons like the notorious BMT set sandwich but then deli on the build your own which has everything on it is cheaper and that just the first one tikka is another one I see rapid shrinkage of store numbers to rival the growth and he's right some stores are just broken I've seen flooring on the wall at one place because their profit line is so tight. So many people walk in and walk out now I work in a hospital location which is one of the only food stores on site and they still walk even tho there is no other place to get food we've had people walk at the till once they hear the price n those subs just end up in the bin!! Which makes food cost go up I see whole cambros of meat go in bin regularly those cheese balls always go in bin same with crispers at one store my typical day was get in at 2pm stores a tip on my own from 4pm 4 delivery services and a supermarket opposite then expected to do next day prep retard the breads clean store do online orders put delivery away and serve instore customers we are told to prioritize online orders which as you can imagine make in store customers angry leading to abuse I've been threatened to have my head smashed in because I wouldn't give premium cheese for free! We've had people leave because they had so much abuse😢😢 I can tell you the financial state of franchises totally skint and on the brink of bankruptcy 😢😢

In my late teens, S&A in Clearwater, FL, complete with live music in the Pub, was my Saturday go to. It will still be difficult to decide on the Kensington Club vs Prime Rib either way required a side of Lobster Tail. I can't wait!

Kelli Valade, the CEO of Denny's, needs to address the extreme animal abuse happening in Denny's supply chain toward pregnant mother pigs. She has ignored over 53,000 messages from the public asking her to BAN cruel cages that intensively confine pregnant pigs for nearly their entire lives. Many companies have banned this and it's illegal in several states. Kelli Valade needs to listen to the public and eliminate cruel and unnecessary practices. Why is Women's Foodservice Forum featuring Kelli in their upcoming conference? What kind of a leader refuses to acknowledge such concerns from the public?

The location in San Leandro is a joke. The frying oil is so old and overused (the sign of a cheap management practice) and you get bitter, acrid smelling chicken cooked nicely, but is sour on the palate) you hit the great fries with much ketchup to compensate and sugar out. Marginal chain. The grade C gyros place around the corner is better.
