Welcome to Pure English Practice with Karen Taylor, co-author of the Color Vowel® Approach for improved spoken English. Here, you can practice speaking English by participating in the chants and musical exercises provided in our videos.

Wow, Karen, I was thinking about those two ways to pronounce the letter "r". And I need to say that we have these ways to pronounce it (caro = expensive and carro = car)
Hi Gilson, it's true! In Portuguese and Spanish, there are TWO ways to pronounce R -- one is a single "tapped" R (as in "caro"), and the other is a "trilled" R (as in "carro"). Both of these R's are CONSONANTS, because they involve the tongue touching the roof of the mouth. North American English R, by contrast, is mostly VOWEL-like, in that the sound comes from the shape of the space we create with our tongue (without touching the tongue to the roof of the mouth). For this reason, it's very helpful for learners to think of all English R's as PURPLE vowel sounds. :)
