Hi there and welcome to my channel!
I am a car camper living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I camp as often as I can, and always search google and TH-cam for info on 'new-to-me' campgrounds and often times, there is not much to find as far as photos and videos.
On this channel, I want to provide informative videos on campgrounds, BLM & Forest Land, Wildernesses Areas, and hiking trails.
I hope you all enjoy!

I get carsick watching the driving sequences. But nice to get the lowdown even before arriving.
Which two do you think is the best campground in New Mexico and one in Colorado for free?
Oooooo, that’s a tough one. In NM for free I really like Lagunitas Campground, and San Lorenzo Canyon is quite amazing. Probably the best kept free campground is Rio Chama. My 2 all time favorite places to visit in Colorado are Telliride & Silverton, so Alta Lakes near Telluride and South Mineral Creek Road near Silverton. I recently camped near Crested Butte and the camping there is pretty great too, but Alta Lakes would be my choice for best free campground in CO.
Wow, this place is amazing! I was wondering about rain - does it get a lot of rain in December? Thanks! 💙Terry and Terri
It really is! Who knows with the weather we’ve been getting lately, but it shouldn’t be rainy. It’s generally sunny and dry around there. The days will probably be in the 50s-60s, but the nights will be cool, lower 30s even in the 20s, so that’s something to think about. I’ve camped there in Dec & January in a tent and it wasn’t bad at all (I sleep in layers and have a -20 sleeping bag). ⛺️
@ Sounds good! We have a hot tent so should be fine! Thanks!
Wow, so cool! Temps pretty mild there in December? By any chance, did they put a new outhouse there yet? ;-) Thanks!! 💙Terry and Terri
Ha! I doubt that they’ll ever replace that outhouse! Yeah, generally we don’t get snows that stick until Jan or Feb but it does get cold at night/early morning. 🏕️
@ Luckily, don’t see those old ones too often! 😵💫 Thanks!
Looks nice! Do you know what the temps are like here in December? We are looking for a free campground in central or southern NM with fairly warm temps in December. Thanks so much! 💙Terry and Terri
Hey you two! The temps around Socorro are fairly mild, but it may be a bit cooler where the campground is. If the roads are dry, there’s Luna Park CG (video) and an area of dispersed camping before you get there. There are some dispersed sites on the way to San Lorenzo Canyon and in San Lorenzo Canyon (video). There’s a tiny CG in the town of Kingston maps.app.goo.gl/c7Qntgdk2yRWegwN7?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy And then there’s Baylor Pass Trailhead (video), Baylor Canyon Rd (video), and Sierra Vista Trailhead (video) outside of Las Cruces, but that’s down south. I hope that helps and will write back if I think of anywhere else! 🏕️
@@highdesertcampertours Thanks for all the great suggestions! We appreciate you taking the time...
For sure! There’s so many cool places to see here that a lot of people don’t get to see, so I hope you guys will be able to! I’m sure you’ll make some great videos too!
Settings for this one pls? The ISO shutter speed white balance?
I didn’t change anything manually, I used the starlapse as is :) Hope that helps!
@ its in full auto mode when you go to starlapse?
Yep! I think you have the option to change the aspect ratio, and I would’ve changed that to 16:9, but that’s it. There was no moon out so I felt it would be fine.
Awesome! I was there when you filmed this. Truck and pop-up in site 9. I remember visiting with you. Crazy that I stumbled upon this 5 years later.
Cool man, you were there bow hunting, right? I’m glad you found the video! I’ve got to go back there and make a new video- this one is pretty bad! 😜
Awesome job and thanks for sharing your experience with us
Great place! I spend practically the entire summer there..
Nice! I’m glad I finally visited this past summer, I’ve been meaning to explore the area for some time now! Thanks for watching!
Awesome! Free? Might need to check this one out next year.
Yep, it’s free! You guys would love it there I’m sure! :)
Hey, gosh, it’s hard to believe y’all haven’t been! It’s truly a gem!
@@marthaee You know, for years we just went to the same campgrounds over and over. We didn't really branch out much until a few years ago.
@ ahh.. good you are branching out! Lots of beauty in our Land of Enchantment! ❤️☺️
Thank you. I love these. I've visited quite a few of the campgrounds in New Mexico that you have features. I've bookmarked the rest for the future.
That’s awesome! Thanks for the comment!
This place is awesome.. have been there many times! Well worth the effort getting there!
another sweet spot added to my new mexico list, thanks!
It’s a beautiful forest and camping area!
i trapped myself on a towering pillar in san lorenzo canyon new mexico while jumping from spire to spire, realizing i had jumped from a taller one to a shorter one when my friend bill yelled "how you gonna get back?" I began to explore my prison, and there in the rock i found stairs carved into the rock. Someone, sometime, had done the same thing and had to carve these steps to escape. This was 40 odd years ago. Did i dream it, or was it real? anyone else ever seen them?
Now I want to go check that out!! Thanks for sharing!
I just wanna say a BIG THANK YOU for posting these very informative, short, videos! your presentation from start to finish is perfect! Making plans for this summer!
You are very welcome and thanks for the kind comment! 🏕️
Thank you for the great video and information on getting a trailer in. Think we'll take the tent! Also, thanks for showing the sites and giving information on them. Very helpful.
You’re welcome and thank you for the comment! This is a truly unique area, don’t forget your camera and enjoy your visit! :)
Shh--Let's not tell everyone how groovy Glenwood is
Nice! Thanks! I’ve been to San Pedro Parks many times..hiked, camped at Resumidero, but for some reason have never been to this one! Gonna go sometime.
Great video. Thank you
You’re welcome and thanks for the comment!
💯 💯💯💯
I appreciate the Box Recreation for camping then I will leave it then go to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. For photos, I like it for plants, dragonflies and damselflies, snakes, lizards and of course birds. Then I will return for the Box. Thank you again.
Sounds like a perfect couple of days! Take care!
That is a great place. I am sure that I will go camping here. Maybe next year. Thanks a lot for exploring. I like your videos a lot. Keep it going.
I definitely will! Thanks for the comment!
Thanks. I am at Lone Rock right now….and think I may just stay here!
Cool! I really like Lone Rock too! I’ve stayed there several times. Enjoy your visit! 🏕️
Thank You so nice to get lost with all your videos. This made my day and set my mood for the day as I am currently on a Union Strike. This drive and campground is a definite visit for the future.
That makes me so happy to hear that this made your day, and your comment made mine! Good luck on the strike!
Nice! Very informative! I’ve been there, but just drove through to check it out.. that entire area is lovely!
I agree! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I stayed at campsite 1 two different times, awesome place, I also drove out the opposite way that spit me out in the Jemez near Fenton Lake, beautiful but rough way out... Love NM, thank you for posting!
I ended up at a dispersed campsite, but the 1st site would be my choice too!
@@highdesertcampertours I woke up to loud breathing and unzipped my tent window and about 8 cows had surrounded my tent and were sniffing my firepit, lol, I LOVE New Mexico!
😅 Lucky they were cows!
@@highdesertcampertours as a single female traveler, I do carry bear spray, for two legged bears especially! Lol
😜🤣👍🏼
This looks really nice. I've been in the area south of here, coming up from Jemez Springs / Valles Caldera. Fenton Lake is a cool spot in the winter. A bunch of people ice fishing on the lake. Something I hadn't seen before. Went to Upper La Junta a couple of weeks ago -- just after your last video on it. Got a spot right on the creek. It was great until the snow and rain hit, lol. Marked to return when the weather is friendlier.
Ok, cool- I’m from Minnesota and ice fishing is a way of life there! Snow already?!! I just love La Junta Canyon! Thanks for watching & commenting!
Thanks for the preview!
You’re welcome, thanks for watching!
Pls don't camp at site 1. I've had to climb around rvs literally blocking the exit from the trail.
I agree ☝️
Any chance of seeing a bear? Thanks for the video!
I’ve never seen a bear there, but they’re around! Thanks for watching! 🏕️
great spot, adding it to my new mexico list, thanks!
Are you allowed to kayak fish at this lake?
Float fishing is permitted. If you wanted to be 100% sure, call the Canjilon Ranger District at (575) 684-2489, but a kayak should be fine. It’s beautiful there, enjoy your time! 🏕️
I dig the music. Real nice.
Sweet! Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment! 🏕️
Thank you. You covered all the info I needed. :)
Sweet, glad to help! Thanks for the comment! 🏕️
Is the road super bad? I have a ford maverick (small truck).. wondering if it will make it. Looks like a great place! Any other possibilities near Chama? Going mid to late Sept. thanks!
I’m not sure if you can get there from Chama without going all the way around on Hwy 17 into CO and back down to NM, you may want to call the Forest Service 1-575-758-6200. There are 2 state parks (El Valdo & Heron Lake) and Hopewell Lake Campground is about an hour away. I didn’t think the road (from the east) was too bad, but pretty rutted near the Lagunita campgrounds- I made it fine (but took my time) in my 2013 Honda CRV. I hope that helps and enjoy your visit!
@@highdesertcampertours thanks!
@@highdesertcampertoursI think I’m gonna give it a try this week,. Will be coming from Albuquerque, so I will be going in via FR 87. I will call forest service before going.. if the road gets really bad, I may look for a place to car camp along that road somewhere.. hopefully!
There are a bunch of dispersed sites on the way after driving in several miles, you should be able to find something if you can’t make it to the lakes! There will probably be a lot of hunters set up so keep that in mind too🏕️
@@highdesertcampertours ok thanks!
Hey, I was wondering how busy it was when you went. Decided we'd like to go during a weekend a couple weeks from now and don't have a reservation. Would you expect all of the unreserved sites to be taken if we arrive on a friday night? Cheers mate and great video!
It is a very busy campground, and most likely all the sites would be taken on a Friday night, but I know occasionally there could be an open site because of someone not showing up for their reservation. There are other campgrounds in the area, so if not, you should at least be able to find a site in the area.
Hi new subscriber! I enjoyed the view and would love to visit with the family. Is it a river flowing along side of the sites? Or is it one big lake? TIA!
Thanks for subscribing! It is a beautiful creek :) Enjoy your visit! 🏕
I'll try this campground out. Yes, shade but also enough sun for my solar system to charge.
Yes, for sure! Enjoy your time there, it’s a nice forest! 🏕️
rad spots! what time of year did you visit?
They really are! I filmed it on May 31st
Nice video. Thank you for putting it together for us.
Your welcome! Thanks for the comment and watching!
Nice! Site 0 -- this changes everything! Currently out on a roam and may head through this area. Will have to check it out. Thanks!
🤣 I’m actually unsure how those first sites are numbered, but they screwed it up when they painted the numbers. I camp off that road a lot, so next time I’m there I’ll check to see how they numbered it. Enjoy if you check it out, it’s beautiful back there!
Kudos for your graphics.
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video! Really like the way you show each site and the drive in.. I am curious about the 22ft length restriction when many of the sites were 35ft or longer. Seems like I could get in/out with a 34 ft 5th wheel? Is that a Forest Service length restriction?
You’re welcome and I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I think the 22ft restriction has to do with the additional tow vehicle, so the 35ft driveway can hold a 22ft trailer and a tow vehicle. It is a FS length restriction but I am unsure how strict they are with it. There are other campgrounds (and dispersed camping) in the area that have larger sites (Nash Fork and North Fork Campgrounds), but Sugarloaf has the best views. I would personally call the Laramie FS at 307-745-2300 just to make sure, but I’m thinking they are pretty strict on it. Whether or not you camp at Sugarloaf, I hope you go up to the Snowies and have a great time!
Hey, thank you for showing how the numbering works with the 4th of July CG. In fact the first weekend of August, was our first time staying there. It’s a charming campground. We stayed on site 12, it was very nice. It is a little run down, but a really nice area. The Crimson trail was very nice hike also. Saturday we did have the party campers, but not to bad. We even made it in a small Mini( no not a Countryman). But you are right you need 4x4 for the rest of the forest road. Thanks again!😃
Definitely! Thanks for watching and I agree that it’s a charming campground. 12 is a very nice site, I see why you chose it! Thanks for the comment and take care! 🏕️
Just out of curiosity, have you noticed fewer people out there? The NP are busy, but it seems there are fewer in the other campgrounds.😊
It wasn’t busy at all when I was there but it’s supposed to be a lot more busy in the fall when the leaves change. I tend to camp (also a tent camper) off-season and during the week, so it’s generally not busy, but I also try to stay away from crowded areas too. That’s how I’ve always done it, and I haven’t really noticed a change, but it could be that the surge of people going “outdoors” at the start of the pandemic have gone back indoors? Also, the deeper you go in, the less people there are.
@highdesertcampertours I camp when ever it's possible, this year was really disrupted when a f1 tornado came through and dropped a 1000 trees or so, that might be an exaggeration but it seems like it. Been cleaning up a lot of big Ole oak trees helping neighbors out.
I really like your videos. I tent camp so that's more important to me than rv availability, you cover both well I think. Will add this to my ever increasing list. Thanks! Hope to see you in the woods sometime.
Thanks for watching and commenting! See you in the woods! 🏕️
my kinda campground, lots of shade, thanks adding to my list!
I really liked it there, the forest is great! Thanks for watching! 🏕️
Rad place, adding it to my list, thanks for the video!
You bet!
So many places to see.......
Glad I found your channel! Keep up the good work.
Will do, thank you!!
Hi there! Just found my next westward campground lol. After the southern foray. About 12.5 hours from SW Missouri. Stay one night at either Cimarron National Grassland (free), Alibates Flint Quarry (free and reservable sites and a really neat place north of Amarillo) or Cap Rock Canyon, Palo Duro canyon, both Texas State Parks and nice! Thanks much!
Hey there! They all sound like great places, I’ve heard of Caprock & Paulo Duro Canyons but had to look them all up. Very cool places! I love figuring out routes and new places to camp! Looks like good times ahead! 🏕️
