Hi guys, Loving the build videos. Wondering if there are any more videos coming?
Good on you mate thanks for sharing
I am so happy I watched your video, all the way to the part that I was hoping you would show - the control panel of your fridge - I have a Dometic 3 way with the identical control panel as your one. How do you set up the panel to AES (Automatic Energy Select), the manual does not explain, Dometic NZ has no clue, the Gas fitter that was recommended by Dometic NZ, who installed it, has no idea. Mine is in MES (Manual Energy Select) mode. I would like it to be in AES, any help will be much appreciated, thanks
Awsome my problem solved 🍻👍

Discovered your channel 2 days ago. ZG is my favourite car, so obviously I’m loving the project. Love the VGG shoutouts too. All in all, great work and I am excited about out the future of Crusty.
@@supagreein Thanks mate. Will get back into it soon 👍😎
So how does the fridge run if you stop a couple times on the way? And dont say gas 😂 as it wont switch back and we all know will forget to switch back.
Thanks for the video, you're right same issue and on TH-cam🤣. One really quick question, noticed you didn't run an earth from the car battery, did you just bolt on the chassis at rear with a short earth lead? The video was great, thankyou 🤘
@@robbiep3782 . Just from memory, as I did this quite some time ago. I’m pretty sure I grounded it to the chassis near the Anderson plug.
How does it work when you stop driving? Does your car battery go flat if you forget to unplug the blue anderson?
@@t4796 . No, you do have a point in asking tho… not in this case because the fridge that we have detects that the ignition supply has stopped and the fridge automatically switches to gas (or AC if it’s attached)
@@smoothersbackyard my uncle told me a story when he picked up his van. It was wired up with a feed from the car to fridge, but the fridge wasn't like yours and he left it hooked up to his car and woke up to a flat starter battery. I might have missed that section in your video, I'm a bit tired and skipped a bit at the end. Will have another watch tomorrow.
Thanks for the video buddy. I'm just about to do this job I was thinking I had to run a isolator on my car but you didn't so I guess you just left the trigger wire in the 12 pin on the car and van and just renewed the power and earth. I will have a look at the back of my fridge tomorrow to see if I can figure out the power and earth I need to find. Well done
Hi mate witch jaycar did you get the cable from and a code number if you know it my jaycar have no idea
@@MarkDredge-r9l . Lismore NSW, but our JayCar is incorporated into our Auto Barn store so it could be and Auto Barn supply?
Thank you
Good video mate, thanks. Just got my first caravan and can’t get over how bad the industry is, the inconsistency and doing stuff as quick and cheap as possible to pump new vans out and make big profits
Sorry i was laughing so much haha if you wasnt using white betty why didnt you cut radiator support panel out and pull motor and trans out that way work smarter not harder
Haha... Yeah I thought of that but I could'nt bring myself to cut up a perfectly good rad support. Hopefully someone can use it 😜
Put a mask and glasses on Lawson or you ll have to call the ambo s / loving the process guys!
Hmmm, I do have to remind myself and him it that! 😂👍
Hi mate first of great to see you and your son on the project together 👍 and also noticed front pipe on right hand header looks to be removable from rest of header might let other 3 pipes in past steering box then poke last pipe down unsure mate just thinking other than fitting when putting motor back in be a pr#$ck ah . Anyway been watching your vids for while time to subscribe mate . Keep up the good vids and im a holden man 🤐 but fords , vals ,holdens anything prior to 1980 is 👍alright in my books watch you next time cheers trev 👍
Thanks mate. Ha, I’m a Holden man too! 🙄😂🤣
Doing well
Good work mate but you should have taken the motor out before the diff but keep up the good work cheers
Great video thanks. Did you supply the blue plug via a VSR or relay controlled by your ignition so the fridge knows when your engine is running and does not drain your car battery while you are stopped and not disconnected your caravan. Thanks
I like to pressure wash dirty old crusty engine bays before I do anything, but I have to say that Clevelands are great to work on. I love everything about them. I suspect the amount of rust behind the pump may also extend to the water jackets inside the block. I wouldn't be surprised if you have more crusted up and even restricted passages leading to the heads. Needs a few good flushes with cooling system flush before adding fresh coolant. Unfortunately, coolant wasn't much of a ting back in the day and so many engines suffered major internal corrosion and component failure as a result. You must use coolant for obvious reasons.
i just use a sack truck, bottle on the front and weld a shelf over the wheels for the welder. works a treat and far more portable
I've heard of guys who used to weld saying big canisters will last for decades in your own. How true that is I don't know your mileage varies based on your own work. I like more compact items if I can get them being a traveling tech.
I have something similar to what he shows near the start of the video. It lasts me a month or so of hobbyist level welding. Longer if I'm not welding a ton. The bigger ones are nice but a pain if they aren't stationary, plus taking them to get refilled depending on what kind of vehicle you drive
Talk about clickbait 😂I seriously thought Milwaukee had brought out a welding trolley......anyways top work....I love doing things like that. Great system you've made might need to mobilise my MIG now..........was that rusty in the background?
Haha, yeah sorry (not sorry 🤣) for the click bait! Lol.. Yes, that’s Rusty 😎👍
Betty White was a good score!
Play sum ABBA that will get rid of the snakes
Lol 😂
I need a parts car like Betty for my build
Keep the wheels
Poor Betty! RIP Don't know why I can't share UTube anymore and haven't been getting these episodes of Smoother's Backyard or previous episodes of 'Crusty'?? even though I subscribed long time ago. Any ideas?
Wow!
You definitely have the rite idea with the ZF taillights 👌
Did yall have coupes ?
Not in the Fairlane but in the same body family is the Falcon hardtop coupe. We definitley can't afford one of those though.
great video love seeing the old Fords bought back to life even seeing the cars being pulled apart for donor parts plenty good stuff still despite the rust. Does it have a 9" diff or stocky i know videoing and editing so time consuming if you don't have the time appreciate your efforts thanks for sharing.
Stock diffs in crusty and rusty, Borgwarner I beleive. Keep watching though... things are evolving 😉
Thank you mate for the new video very interesting to watch love all fairlane

Great attention to detail, much appreciated!! I have a defender 110 2000 yr that ill be fitting up the exact mirrors, clearview dont even sell mirrors to fit my ol gal, so your video to get all the features is work is priceless, so thanks again cheers mate
The boot key wont be the ignition. It will be a round headed key. I had a zf same as yours but no a.c 2nd owner bought in 89. Sold in 92. Wasnt a goer but drove nice
You can’t tell a Cleo from a Windsor and you can’t see the massive boot release handle, please stop as you’re over your head before you started
Only thing I would say is that a relay should be set up in the car to cut the power feed to the fridge when the car is turned off. If you park up for some time, the fridge will drain the car battery with this set up.
The ignition wire will stop the fridge running on 12v when it senses the alternator is no longer operating.
Goodonya for having a go at fixing the problem that shouldn’t be there to begin with. I’m about to do a similar job on my van to improve on the 12 pin plug setup. I’ve put a VSR in the circuit though so it will cut off when the engine isn’t running. Don’t want a flat vehicle battery.
Another example of incorrect wiring by those that should know better, along with running wires over sharp edges. Great video.
I always assumed this was the right way, but have asked around and apparently it's not. I figured that alternator would charge the batteries and you'd be sweet. I found that my can is wired correctly, but we left it plugged in to the car in Adelaide after crossing the Nullarbor and it drained the car battery! Off to the Toyota dealer the re set all the warning codes! Doh
Good video. Agree it’s a disgrace when you pay huge amounts of money and have to problem solve issues that should have been done in the factory.

Excellent video on what appears to be a common problem with caravan manufactures. May I add a comment on the Gas Safety of the installation of the fridge. The all manufacturers of three way fridges require that the combustion area of the fridge is completely isolated from the living area. This means that the fridge cabinet is required to be sealed and any carbon monoxide that is present as a result of combustion or any potential gas leak will not enter the interior of the caravan. Both gases are heavier than air and both are deadly. This is done with a sealing gasket on the front mounting flange of the fridge and by fully sealing the cabinet from the interior of the caravan. The only openings allowed are the external vents. The lower vent must be below or level with the bottom of the cabinet. Clearly the manufacturer of this caravan has not complied with this gas safety requirement as you were able to install the cable between the body and the cabinet. I am sure that you can rectify this without the caravan manufactures help. Refer to the fridge installation manual for more information if needed.
Thanks Peter. I’ll check it out 😎👍
Agree fridge cabinet should be isolated from living area!!
Thanks I need to do the same thing
We had same problem with older caravan and 3 way fridge. It cost me an AGM battery when were out in the middle of Woop Woop. Got home okay and decidedto re wire. Firstly I disconnected the 12 volt wiring from fridge terminal. Ran a new dedicated 12 volt hd cable from vehicle battery via low voltage voltage sensitive relay to terminate at rear with an Anderson plug. Installed a new 12 v hd cable with Anderson plug at the drawbar and then under the van inside black retic tubing and attached that to the chassis with cable ties. Where that line came into the van I connected the wiring to an hd terminal block with earth wire grounded to chassis. From there I ran one 40 amp fused wire to the dc to dc charger and the other went directly to the fridge terminal via a 40 amp fuse. No problem since. If we stop for a short rest or refuel, the l the VSR gives me peace of mind.
We have the exact same caravan and had the same problem, our solution however was to upgrade the car bcdc to a 50amp charger and install a mini boost in the van to increase the amps going into the CV house batteries as the fridge pulls about 24amps. I’m not 100% certain it works all that well cause when we do long drive days our fridge temp will go up to about 7-9 degrees so less than ideal. With your modification does the fridge maintain a more constant temp when on 12v power?
Hi Terry. Yes, it's been spot on since I did the modification. We just travelled out to the Big Red Bash and back and the fridge ran flawlessly on gas when stopped and 12v while travelling and the "house" batteries stayed topped up at all times.
I'm guessing this is a common setup. I have a different brand caravan and I think they've done the same, as the anderson plug on the van (I have a grey anderson as well as a 12 pin plug just like you) reads 12v when it's not connected to anything. I'm guessing the reason is that when you're on the move the anderson plug is supposed to charge the house battery as well as run the fridge - otherwise they'll need to run a 2nd anderson plug like you have here. I guess it's cheaper this way. Not sure if the large 12v pin on the 12 pin plug is used to run the fridge, however, so i coul be wrong.

Apparently its a very common problem, and you have done a far better job than "professionals". I will forgive the use of that tool for crimping, as you backed it up with solder. The tool is a good wire stripper, but an inadequate crimping tool.. There are far better crimping tools out there, but as you would rarely need them its probably not worth the cost. At least you didnt use side cutters, botl cutters or a vice to "crimp" the connectors. I kid you not, I have seen those reccomended and demonstrated...😮😮
I had the exact car in the 90s....paid 3k for it had 200k/kms
