I would add, if possible, to move up wind of the beast so that the spray hits its face not yours. And don't walk backwards without checking there's no log to fall over. Short shift your feet for clearance if you choose to move backwards without looking.

All great information. I live in bear country, and am frequently in grizzly bear country. Grizz are known for circling back and coming up from behind, as if hunting you! I had no idea there were different qualities of bear spray... I'm out hiking all the time... I have a small can of dog spray, but I think I will go get me a can of proper bear spray. Thank you for this. I've forwarded it to my daughter and son in law who live in the middle of nowhere, in grizzly bear country.... he thinks he doesn't need bear spray.. he thinks he can get his rifle out, cock and aim at the bear quick enough. I dont think anyone ca do all that, that fast...... I know bear spray for immediate action is a better, faster choice.

I’ll stick with a firearm first. For me bear spray is for curious or bluffing bears. If it’s not a bluff charge I’m not going to rely on pepper spray having seen its effects on people and bears.

I was out biking in the middle of nowhere. No cars around to help scare them off the road. So I turn my last corner and maybe 25-35m away I seen just a little cub he didn’t notice me till I noticed him when I was already turned around. I started biking fast and was so tired after doing 12mi before that. Yes it was just a cub but that means his mother was just in the bush line behind it. So that’s why I was scared and thinking about buying bear spray for safety. Thank you so much for this descriptive on using bear spray

Okay. A grizzly can charge at 35 mph. That is 51 fps. If your spray has an effective range of 30 feet, that means you can't affect change in that bear's behavior until it is half a second from you. If you expect the bear to be able to stop or divert in half a second, you're probably going to be disappointed. We must distinguish between determined aggressive behavior and displayed annoyance. If a bear is determined to remove you as a threat, there will likely be little or no warning. If, or likely, when as a bear's nose is 7 times better than a bloodhound's, the bear detects you first, it is going to circle to your flank. Bears are ambush predators. You'll hear crashing to one side, and if the bear is within 50 yards, it will be on top of you in under 3 seconds. Momentum alone will carry it through 30 feet so if you can't begin to affect change in the bear's behavior until this point, it is too late. Standing, stomping, raking, popping jaws, huffing, and bluff charges are not determined aggression. These are the behaviors bear spray can be useful in, though a bear displaying these annoyance behaviors is offering you a way to avoid conflict by retreating, so it is probably best you simply leave the area.

OK, I've watched the video. I understand the game plan. I've found the best bear spray money can buy. I know how to spray effectively to repel the bear. My only remaining question is, how many bears have watched the video and understand their part in all this???

if a bear is standing that close, it's already decided it doesn't want to kill you. back away slowly and leave it alone. So sick of bear defense tips from people that don't know the first thing about bears. You won't see the bear that's going to attack you until it's far too late unless you're stupid and provoke it. with say... bear spray. Bears are predators, they hunt like big cats, stay out of dense growth, give them space. Don't provoke them. A bear that's decided to attack, if you have time for bear spray, it won't do a thing.

Better hope it's not windy.
