Comparing the 3 styles of Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom
A video comparing and contrasting the three styles of Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom. All opinions are my own, of course. I remember looking for a video like this when I was first choosing what loom to buy (before my loom acquisition got out of control...) Anyway. My thoughts.

Picking out a good dowel rod will save you frustration later. It boils down to two things: thickness and straightness. I suggest 7/16 inch as it has little flex without a ton of bulk. The video shows how to do the roll test for straightness.

Two methods are shown: - carrying unused weft up the selvage - weaving ends in with ply-split technique note if you want to carry up the selvage know that my “under holes, over slots” method works if you are starting the next pick in the up shed. If the new pick starts in the down shed it is the opposite. Weaving on an Ashford 10” Sample it with 7.5 dent heddle...

    I feel you can sample on a standard big loom. You don't beat with the heddle, you use a little inkle loom shuttle and beat with that. You only warp up the bare minimum front to back and so never advance. I get a few coasters out of that and it's enough to show me what the project will be like. I then use some math to compare draw in and shrinkage.

      It is a lot of math! The good news is there are calculators out there that will do it for you. Just plug in the numbers for the width you want. Then whatever it tells you to warp- divide in half for the top and bottom layer. Here are some links: www.weavolution.com/resources/weaving-calculator schachtspindle.com/warp-and-weft-calculator/ halcyonyarn.com/weaving-calculator/?finished_piece_width=10&finished_piece_length=10&finished_piece_count=1&loom_waste=24&sample_length=0&warp_epi=1&warp_dollars_unit=0&warp_yds_unit=1&warp_yarn_item_no_three=undefined&warp_yarn_item_four=&warp_epi=1&length_takeup=10&length_shrinkage=10&finished_piece_fringe=0&extra_ends=0&weft_ppi=1&weft_dollars_unit=0&weft_yds_unit=1&weft_yarn_item_no_three=undefined&weft_yarn_item_four=&weft_takeup=10&width_shrinkage=10

      For double width? Yes. Video 4 in this series is just about the actions of the various heddles (rods and ridged). Video 3 goes in some depth about setup for the two rod heddles. This series is suppose to be rather in depth, as it was made upon request for more info into the technique I use. I have a few shorter videos that goes over the technique and I’ll link below: m.th-cam.com/video/95T_QXeodZA/w-d-xo.html And a short demo without instruction: m.th-cam.com/video/kE_FFXCXLFQ/w-d-xo.html

      Since your heddle’s neutral position is so close to the back, couldn’t you move it forward to one of the other slots while you’re warping. It doesn’t matter and gives you more room, as far as I can see?

    • @BigWolf130
      @BigWolf130 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kinda like the math formulas it gives some added insight. It's nice to see the math written out other people will just say pieces of the math all throughout the video and I will forget all the variables. I also have some math comprehension problems like connecting it to the real world. A trick I discovered that most mathmation's use is if you don't understand something in the math don't focus too much on and maybe later it will come to you. It's really helped me in much more complex topics that I've had trouble connecting math to. I guess my point is math is really good at laying out most of the information all at once, much like an intro of a video.

    I’d like to get a class set of ashford looms to teach beginners. I like the portability factor of the knitters loom and the fact that it seems nice to work between the table and your lap. Are there other issues to consider using the knitters to teach beginners. I feel like the weaving space of the sampleit would make the experience not as pleasant. I also intend on using knitting yarns mostly in warp and weft. Mostly, I want to create and easy pleasant experience for the participants. My workshop is less about learning to weave and more about having a creative experience.

    • @tabbywoven7941
      @tabbywoven7941 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be a bit harder to warp, but mainly if you are use to other looms. The main thing is probably the cost factor. My opinion, of course, but I find the knitters loom one of the most comfortable to weave at a table with. That said, if you get some laptop tables or tv dinner trays, the 10” sample it works very nicely and would be a cheaper buy. The 12” knitters is more portable, though. What fun, in any case! Sounds like a fun course to take and to teach.

      @@tabbywoven7941 thanks. So if they aren’t going to be warping the loom then the weaving experience sounds like it would be best with the knitters loom. do you have a website? I actually don’t sell the looms (but you did put an idea in my head!) I have a “collection” of looms because we were testing what we do sell (the Tabby Jack) and wanted to make sure it was as close to universal as possible. I also have a collection of looms for personal use and the hopes to give classes (I was hampered by covid protocols but hope to start up classes soon :) Anyways, I’m not sure who good distributors are in Canada but you can reach out to Ashford directly and they should be able to give you a list (or perhaps a discount for buying in bulk?)
